SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCedric Johnson is creating a good problem for the BengalsIts no secret the Cincinnati Bengals need people to step up on the defensive side of the ball during training camp.Cedric Johnson is more than happy to oblige. With Shemar Stewart out with an injury, Johnson has been making the most of his chances during camp at a crowded spot on the depth chart. After all, the Bengals big plan at defensive end is some platoon of Boye Mafe, Shemar Stewart, Cashius Howell and Myles Murphy. Johnson is just a depth guy.But Johnson isnt just a guy.As The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr. pointed out while naming Johnson one of the biggest winners of camp so far, the defensive end has produced 23 pressures over 197 pass-rush attempts. Its a small, but very productive sample size. Why is this a problem for the Bengals, beyond throwing another efficient pass-rusher at Joe Burrow in what is suddenly a much-improved defense? On paper, Stewart is the first-round pick who is supposed to be soaking up snaps with Mafe, Howell and Murphy. But if he comes back and doesnt make as many waves as Johnson, it makes the coaching call quite a bit tougher. Do they sideline Johnson again in the hopes of feeding Stewart as many developmental snaps as possible?Hard to say, but its pretty clear that Johnsons small sample size deserves to be bigger. The sixth-rounder from 2024 clearly has some untapped potential worth exploring. No doubt, its a good problem for the Bengals to have. And quality depth along the line should, in fact, be a strength in 2026, not a weakness. Sharing snaps means staying fresh and hopefully injury-free, while letting guys like Stewart line up all over formations. While his name and draft stock arent as big as others on the depth chart, its plenty clear Johnson will have an important role to play during the regular season. This article originally appeared on Bengals Wire: Cedric Johnson is creating a good problem for the Bengals0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 263 Views 0 Vista previa

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexas A&M CB on working towards generating more interceptions in 2026Texas A&M's first full preseason practice open to the media took place on Saturday afternoon, and by all accounts, all of us in Aggie media can agree that junior wide receiver Terry Bussey took the cake as the top performer, making an impressive one-handed grab, which, based on the last two practices, was no random act of brilliance on his part. Similar to redshirt sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman's rise this time last year, Bussey, a former five-star athlete in the 2024 recruiting class, was still learning the position after playing quarterback, running back, and cornerback during his historic career at Timpson High School. Combined with junior Mario Craver, Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, Jerome Myles, and rising freshman Aaron Gregory, Texas A&M's 2026 wide receiver rotation is loaded with NFL talent, but so is Texas A&M's secondary, which third-year coach Mike Elko praised as an "SEC-level" unit thanks to the returning starters in several transfer portal additions at cornerback and safety. Now including Colorado transfer safety Tawfiq Byard and former Tennessee cornerback Rickey Gibson, veteran corners Dezz Ricks and Julio Humphrey, combined with the elite safety duo of Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe, provide new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill the ingredients to fix one of the Aggies' remaining issues: interceptions. After recording just three interceptions during the 2025 season, Julio Humphrey, who spoke to the local media after Saturday's practice, stated that Hemphill has emphasized the jugs machine, with every defensive back making "25 catches" pre-practice. Texas A&M's 2025 defense was in position to make a play on the ball more often than not last season, but failed to come down with the ball on multiple occasions. For every cornerback and safety on the roster, possessing at least average receiving skills is necessary to increase the turnover number this season.Texas A&M CB Julio Humphrey says all the DBs are focused on having more interceptions than last year:Pre practice, we each get 25 catches on the jugs machine pic.twitter.com/X7pmCAmDkr TexAgs (@TexAgs) August 8, 2026Contact/Follow us@AggiesWireon X(formerly Twitter) and like our page onFacebookto follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.Follow Cameron on X:@CameronOhnysty.This article originally appeared on Aggies Wire: Texas A&M CB on working towards generating more interceptions in 20260 Commentarios 0 Acciones 263 Views 0 Vista previa

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexas A&M transfer tight end is already looking like a top receiverTexas A&M's 2026 tight end room will be led by senior Micah Riley, who is one of five team captains entering the new campaign, while redshirt freshman Kiotti Armstrong and transfer portal additions Houston Thomas and Richie Anderson fill out the rest of the revamped room after Nate Boerkircher, who was selected in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, led all A&M tight ends in receiving and touchdowns last season.Losing Boerkircher's skill set as an inline blocker and reliable receiver places pressure on Micah Riley to step up as the full-time starter in most 11-personnel looks next season, but under new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, the expectation is that Houston Thomas and Richie Anderson will be heavily utilized in pass sets, while Armstrong, depending on his development over the next three weeks, remains the outlier. Houston Thomas is a College Station native, and while A&M did not offer him out of high school, he has a close relationship with third-year coach Mike Elko going back to his high school playing days, and, during his final season at UTSA, Thomas reeled in 34 receptions for 347 yards and 2 touchdowns, and enters his final collegiate season with the 5th most receiving yards from a tight end in career (916).During the first two practices, Thomas has reportedly looked the part as a receiver, thriving in the seam given his size advantage and sure hands, which was captured by Texas A&M's media team this week. Similar to Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton, Thomas's large catch radius and experience as one of UTSA's No. 1 receiving targets should make him one of starting quarterback Marcel Reed's top targets this fall.Reel it in, 87!#GigEm | @HoustonThomas16pic.twitter.com/ReMTzwdFQY Texas A&M Football (@AggieFootball) August 7, 2026Contact/Follow us@AggiesWireon X(formerly Twitter) and like our page onFacebookto follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.Follow Cameron on X:@CameronOhnysty.This article originally appeared on Aggies Wire: Texas A&M transfer tight end is already looking like a top receiver0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 264 Views 0 Vista previa

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMike Preston: Ravens-Steelers death struggle enters new eraLATROBE, Pa. In one corner, there is former Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, a Super Bowl champion who reached three AFC championship games, won six AFC North titles and posted a 193-124 record in 18 seasons in Baltimore. In the other is Mike Tomlin, another Super Bowl champion who made it to three AFC championship games, claimed eight division titles and finished 201-126-2 in 19 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both are moving on.In fact, both left their jobs within hours of each other in early January. Harbaugh is now the head coach of the New York Giants, and Tomlin is a commentator for NBC. It appears that Harbaugh might have landed in a better situation, even though it might take a year or two to rebuild the Giants.Pittsburgh is ready to compete again, replacing Tomlin with hometown hero Mike McCarthy while reuniting him with his former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, 42. But its strange that neither Tomlin nor Harbaugh are standing on their respective sidelines anymore. Its not like Mike and I talk much, Harbaugh said at a recent Giants practice. We respect each other, and were friendly and stuff. Im sure wed have a beer together and things like that, but we were competing against each other. We were in a death struggle every single year, and it lasted for 18 years. I mean, that cant happen again. For him to last 19 years, that will never happen again.Probably not. The goal is to win immediately in the NFL. Six NFL head coaches have been fired after their first year since 2022. The average age of an NFL head coach is 47.7 years old.A better question is, who was the better coach, Tomlin or Harbaugh?Current Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen played for both. He was a rookie with the Ravens from 2020 to 2023 and later joined the Steelers as a free agent in 2024.I didnt think either one would get fired; its all absolutely crazy, Queen said. You just look at the big picture, how there are different things going on around the world and stuff like this happens. I think Harbs was harder because he was constantly demanding the most out of every single play. It was more about accountability. With Mike, it was making sure I got everybody going, making sure we were on the same page and just being a leader. So it was just two different types of situations I was in, obviously.Enter McCarthy, 62.As a Pittsburgh native, the fans here love him. Why shouldnt they? He has a 185-123-2 record and won Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers. McCarthy has been very complimentary toward Tomlin, even adding the Immaculate Reception from 1972 to his regular practice schedule. But there is so much more to McCarthy. He is Mr. Installation. Its a normal practice for us. We are in concept install mode, McCarthy said before the Steelers practiced Thursday at Saint Vincent College. We have eight installs that we use, offensive, defense and special teams, where we feel like everythings in. So well complete five and six this week, and then well get seven in there on Monday and then move on to get ready for the first game. But we wont complete the eight install until prior to the Jets [preseason] game [on Aug. 21].You get the picture. Now, McCarthy has Rodgers again. Over 13 seasons, they combined for a 100-57-1 record, with Rodgers making nine postseason appearances and winning two of his four NFL Most Valuable Player Awards in 2011 and 2014. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has quietly regrouped for the 2026 season.A year ago, the Steelers were predictable on offense. They ran the ball a lot on a lot of first and second down with halfback Jaylen Warren, and they didnt risk throwing the long ball except against the Ravens. But in the offseason, they traded for Indianapolis wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. so teams could no longer double-team receiver DK Metcalf. They also signed running back Rico Dowdle to share the load with Warren and drafted Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanchor in the first round. Now, Rodgers has multiple weapons in Metcalf, Pittman, Warren and tight ends Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth. Washington 6-7, 264) is as big as former Pittsburgh and Ravens tight end Eric Green (6-5, 279). You can see the comfort level in Rodgers, who had a 95.6 passer rating with 578 yards and two touchdowns against the Ravens last season. Even in practice, he is constantly communicating with his hands, diagramming plays or gesturing in some fashion. He is spraying passes all over the place and isnt afraid to go deep. But here is what separates Rodgers from the rest of the quarterbacks in the NFL: He can control the flow or tempo of a game. Against Baltimore in both games, Rodgers was in the officials and teammates faces. He brought players in and out of the games, even waved off some of Tomlins last-minute calls. To put it simply, Rodgers is jacked, and so are the Steelers.Yeah, thats him, so detailed in everything, Queen said. He listens to all of our checks on defense. If Im saying anything to the DBs or the line, hes listening to those checks, so the next time we come out and we say the same thing, he knows what to expect. So now he can make an adjustment, or he knows where to go with the ball quicker. He is communicating and orchestrating the offense, but definitely a game manager. It will be interesting to see what Pittsburgh does on defense. The pass defense was pathetic last season, allowing 243.9 passing yards per game, No. 29 in the NFL, but the Steelers signed cornerback Jamel Dean to a three-year, $36.75 million deal to start opposite Joey Porter Jr. The defensive line has some quality players, including tackle Cameron Heyward and outside linebacker T.J. Watt, but Watt is in his 10th season, and Heyward is in his 16th.But Queen says the Steelers remain the Steelers; they just do a lot more disguising. He approaches everything the right way, Queen said of McCarthy, but he also wanted to keep up the standards here. Were going to be Pittsburgh, but he is taking feedback from the players. He wants to know the right approach; he is very disciplined. There is a buzz in Pittsburgh again.A year ago, the Steelers beat the Ravens on the final day of the regular season to clinch a playoff spot, while the Ravens went home. Both teams eventually fired their coaches, and the Ravens appear to be happy with first-year coach Jesse Minter, while McCarthy is back home again.I tell you what, I hated to see Tomlin go, but its good to see a hometown guy like Mike McCarthy here with us and some of his staff that hes bringing along, said Steelers fan Aaron Adams, 29. I think they made a lot of changes and moves of weapons on offense, and its good to see that. Some of the defensive guys I hated to see them go, but it seems like a little younger crowd they got coming up, so hopefully they can make some magic happen this year.Lori Coleman agrees.I think new coaching is a big part of what is going on here, not that I didnt like Mike Tomlin, Coleman said. I think we got it now, that we have four quarterbacks; maybe there will be more of an opportunity.Even with Rodgers at age 42?Oh, he still has it, Coleman said.Pittsburgh is desperate for a playoff win. The last time one came on Jan, 15, 2017.Hey, I dont know about a Super Bowl, but hopefully a playoff win, said Jason Lake, 17, from Plum High. Thats all we need. Just one win.____0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 268 Views 0 Vista previa

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMI would have banned Sourav Ganguly: Javagal Srinath on Steve Waughs wait during 2001 Eden Test tossCHENNAI: If Javagal Srinath had been the match referee when former India captain Sourav Ganguly famously kept his Australian counterpart Steve Waugh waiting at the toss during the 2001 Eden Gardens Test match, Ganguly may well have faced a suspension!I would have banned Sourav for a few games, Srinath said at an event here while recalling the incident, which has gone down in history as an act of gamesmanship that rattled Waugh and the Australian team during the course of the famous series that India won 2-1. Ganguly later said that he couldnt find his blazer, leading to an impromptu delay.Srinath, however, praised Gangulys leadership, particularly his ability to nurture youngsters such as Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag. He felt Indian cricket underwent a major transformation after the match-fixing scandal of the late 1990s, with players developing a collective resolve to restore the games image. There was a bit of a resoluteness in each and every player to really put that image back and then prove to the world that cricket is superior, cricket is clean, Srinath said. He recalled that between 1991 and 1997-98, India struggled to win abroad but things began changing from 1999 on.Looking back at the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, Srinath revealed that he had wanted India to bat first after a discussion within the team. I was one of the guys who said we should always bat first and then put them under pressure, he said. But Ganguly had a different view. And once the decision was made, Srinath said the team had to move on, but Australia were simply too strong. He recalled recommending Zaheer to selector Chandu Borde after watching the left-arm pacer take six wickets against Air India while representing the MRF Pace Foundation. When Borde jokingly asked what would happen to Srinath if Zaheer was picked, his response was simple: If hes good, he replaces me. 1330633350 Commentarios 0 Acciones 365 Views 0 Vista previa

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM16-year NBA veteran shares strong criticism of Enes Kanter, Royce White declaring for WNBA DraftPhoto by Jared Siskin/Patrick McMullan via Getty ImagesNBA veteran Robin Lopez reacted to former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft with a sarcastic takedown.Lopez recently wrapped up his NBA career in 2024 after getting drafted in 2008 with the No.15 overall pick. While Lopez was never a star, he enjoyed a long career as a serviceable starter and rotational player. The recent debate over trans women being included in the WNBA led to other former NBA players like Enes Kanter and Royce White to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft, citing the vague language in the CBA about eligibility.Robin Lopez slams Enes Kanter and Royce White over WNBA Draft debateWith Kanter and White trying to force the WNBA to exclude trans athletes through their draft declarations, Lopez criticized his former NBA peers heavily with strong comments against both.Biggest issue: If youre being drafted, people are saying, We want you around for 4 years, and I cant imagine anybody wants Enes Kanter or Royce White around them for even 4 minutes. Weve seen this illustrated whenever Enes is near Turkey, or Royce comes close to logic/reality.Photo by Elsa/Getty ImagesLopez directly attacked both Kanter and White personally, referring to the reaction to Kanters opposition of the incumbent Turkiye government and Whites switch from mental health advocate to a political conspiracy theorist. The former Stanford Cardinal Lopez clearly stands against Kanter and Whites attempts at further politicizing a sensitive WNBA issue, which has been a very polarizing sports topic in recent weeks. The WNBA is looking to address the language in the CBA to have stricter wording, but not necessarily an outright ban on future trans athletes potentially playing in the league. The debate was sparked by Sophie Cunningham, but it has become something else entirely. Hopefully, the WNBA can find a solution thats satisfactory to all parties.Read more:Jason Whitlock wants DiJonai Carrington banned from the WNBA after Sophie Cunningham altercationFever coach Stephanie White defends DiJonai Carrington after hard foul on Sophie CunninghamSophie Cunningham responds to White Privilege comment from hard-fouling opponent after Sky game0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 372 Views 0 Vista previa
