GREENSBORO, NC The final round of the PGA Tour's regular season will be chaotic Sunday for those seeking to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Others atop the Wyndham Championship leaderboard are wanting to ride their momentum into Memphis for the St. Jude FedEx Tournament.At 16 under, co-leaders Beau Hossler and Michael Brennan are projected to leapfrog into the playoffs with a victory. But even a runner-up finish will have the two sweating Sunday as each were outside the top 100 entering the Wyndham.Hossler, 122nd in the playoff standings, can have nothing less than a win, which would be his first on the PGA Tour. Brennan (105th) must finish in a three-way tie for second or better to reach the playoffs. A win would propel Brennan inside the top 50."It would be huge. I mean, I would be playing in Memphis next week," Brennan said. "I saw on the board projected with a win I would move to 47, which would be inside 50 and give me a good chance at staying there the following week."They're not alone, as the bubble is hot for players like Davis Thompson and Jackson Koivun, both vying Sunday to be inside the top 70.Thompson's 5-under 65 Saturday put him 13 under, alone in sixth and projected 73rd in the playoff standings. Koivun's 4-under 66 in the third round has him 9 under, tied for 15th and on the right side of the projected playoff bubble, 67th."I think I've been doing a great job of that this week of just kind of toning it out," Koivun said. "There'll be instances where it kind of creeps into my mind, but for the most part I've done a great job of just zoning out and homing in on the golf course."Wyndham leaderboard: What players need for FedEx Cup PlayoffsFor Thompson, who entered the week 82nd in the standings, he needs a two-way tie for sixth or better to solidify a top 70 spot. Koivun entered the week squarely on the bubble in 70th, but will be in with a top-20 finish.Kevin Yu, in seventh alone at 12 under, is 111th and needs a solo second finish Sunday while Erik van Rooyen is 134th in the standings and needs a win to vault into the playoffs. He's currently 11 under and in T-11.Keegan Bradley is 4 under and tied for 58th at the Wyndham and needs a two-way tie for 38th Sunday after entering the tournament 72nd in the standings.Andrew Putnam, who entered 73rd, needs a two-way tie for 31st Sunday but sits at 5 under and in a tie for 50th.Austin Smotherman needs a solo 12th to advance to the playoffs after entering 76th, but enters Sunday at 6-under par and in a tie for 40th.Keeping FedEx Cup momentumFor Tom Kim, it's about keeping the momentum he's gained over the past two months. After a third place finish at the U.S. Open in June, Kim claimed the Scottish Open in July and a top-20 showing at the 3M open two weeks ago.After a 7-under 63 Saturday vaulted him to 15 under, he's just a shot back of the lead and projected to jump eight spots to 26th in the playoff standings."Just keep building," Kim said. "I think we've still got a lot of tournaments before you can really tell yourself you're kind of safe, especially in my position, so I'm going to try to keep adding to this week and try to play good enough the next two weeks to get to Atlanta."Alex Smalley (14 under, T4) is projected to jump to 22nd while Alex Noren (14 under, T4) is projected for 44th."Yeah, I'm going to try to keep pushing forward," said Smalley, a member at Sedgefield Country Club. "I like everything about him," Hedrick said. Gabe Flynn, SpragueFlynn, a senior, is returning to an Olympian team that brings back a majority of contributing defensive varsity talent from last year. Flynn earned honorable mention in Class 6A's Special District 1 as a linebacker. Flynn and the Olympians have a core of linebackers and strong defensive linemen, giving them an intriguing front seven as the season approaches."He was near the top of the league in tackles," coach AJ Robinson said. "He was our leading tackler last year, he comes back and if you have a good D-line in front of you, you should have a lot of opportunities to make tackles. We're looking for Gabe to have a big season."Benjamin Greer, South SalemSouth Salem gave up one of the higher point tallies of any team in Class 6A last fall but returns a mass amount of defenders with varsity experience. Greer, a senior, collected second-team all-conference honors last fall from the linebacker position and is positioned to be a leader of the defense, and offense, this fall. Greer boasts the physicality and work ethic required of a lead linebacker and he'll help spearhead the defense on a team looking to take some major leaps in 2026."A lot of those guys on offense are going to play defense," coach Josh Vanlue said. "We only lost one (linebacker) last year so everybody's back, which is awesome."Luke Horner, SilvertonHorner earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-state for Silverton en route to a Class 5A state championship a year ago. Now a senior, Horner will once again be a two-way impact guy with a plethora of responsibilties that coach Dan Lever looks forward to seeing him assume. "Luke Horner again will be a staple for us," Lever said. "I think we'll rely on the sure hands and speed of Luke Horner."Tevita Lata, North SalemNorth Salem finished 5-5 a year ago in Class 6A's Special District 1 and Lata was an impact Viking from the linebacker position. At the conclusion of the season, Lata earned all-conference honorable mention. North Salem graduated a lot, but the Vikings' linebacker room is one they look forward to seeing in action this fall."Our linebacking corp is one of our best," coach Caleb Singleton said. "We have five seniors ... it's really fun to be able to coach this group."Josiah Senados, West SalemWest Salem graduated a pair of first-team all-conference linebackers but return an intriguing amount of athleticism and talent at the position. Senados, a senior, earned honorable mention in Class 6A's Special District 1 from linebacker after stepping into the role late last fall. He's back with a bigger workload and two-way responsibilities within the new-look West Salem team."We feel great about that spot," coach Shawn Stanley said. "He ended up starting for us at the end of the year with injuries at middle linebacker and he became on all-league guy. He's an elite football player on both sides of the ball."Wyatt Smith, St. PaulSt. Paul went undefeated in Class 2A's Special District 2 and reached the state semifinals a year ago. Smith was a staple in the Buckaroos' defense, one of the best in the classification, and he earned second-team all state honors as an O-lineman and linebacker.Smith and the Buckaroos return multiple all-state players on both sides of the ball and to replicate, or exceed, the success of last fall Smith and the defense will need to step up once more. Jaden Traeger, KennedyTreager earned Class 3A second-team all-state honors from the linebacker position last fall. He helped Kennedy to a 5-1 finish in Special District 1, 7-3 overall record and a state quarterfinal appearance.The Trojans graduated some strong varsity talent on both sides of the ball, but the return of a pair of all-state athletes is exciting for a team with a new-look conference.Ryder VanDeweghe, SilvertonVanDeweghe, a junior, played a vital role in Silverton's march to a Class 5A state championship last fall. He earned second-team all-conference recognition within the Foxes' loaded defense and is one of many returning players on the hunt for back-to-back titles. If Silverton is going to reach the heights it did last year, Lever anticipates VanDeweghe being a decisive factor."I'm looking forward to who steps forward as vocal leaders in this program," Lever said. "I really expect Levi Schurter to do that, Ryder VanDeweghe to do that ... I'm expecting those guys to step forward but it's going to take more than that."Josiah Vela, CentralA year ago, Vela claimed honorable mention in Class 5A's Special District 3 from the linebacker position. He helped the Panthers to a 4-5 overall season and is back for his senior year.Vela and the Panthers jumped from 5A to 4A in the offseason, meaning they join a conference with Cascade, Philomath, Stayton and more. It's crucial for the Panthers to get out to a good start in 4A's Special District 2, and Vela will play an impact role in that process. Hes been a monster in camp thus far, bringing the speed and explosiveness he flashed in college, and more strength than some expected.Howell made waves when he put Orlando Brown Jr. on his back this past week. Thats not just any offensive lineman, either. Brown is 68 and 350 pounds. The fact that Howell did that to him says a lot about his strength and where he is headed into his rookie season.The Bengals may need Howell to step up early with Shemar Stewart being out for several weeks with a hyperextended knee. Playing alongside Boye Mafe and Myles Murphy gives Howell veterans to learn from, which is great. But Howell isnt just another edge rusher from Texas A&M the Bengals drafted. He can play, and he can be a difference-maker off the edge. Much of the attention is on Stewart, Mafe, and Murphy, but do not overlook Howell.
