Teremoana Teremoana can tick off another first on Wednesday. The Star Gold Coast will get its first taste of the 28-year-old as a headliner, and recent evidence suggest the locals won't need to settle in for a long night. The Brisbane heavyweight has notched up 11 wins and 11 knockouts in his six years as a professional, ending the argument each time within the first two rounds. Next on the hit list? Americas DeAndre Savage (11-1, 11 KOs) who shares the accolade of winning all of his fights without the need for judges.But Teremoana has his sights set way higher than the scalp of Wednesdays 35-year-old challenger.Of course, he is careful not to overtly admit that in the run-up to the 12th fight of his paid career. But with the heavyweight division due to welcome a new generation of stars and belt-holders, hes keen to front that specific queue.Im not like any of these other guys, Teremoana told Uncrowned. I made the decision to jump off of my couch in my 20s and make it my goal to become heavyweight champion of the world. Its a goal, not a dream. Thats what makes me different, hungrier Ill get there because of my own reasons.Over the next 12 months, its likely that we will be seeing the last meaningful fights of this generations heavyweight kings. Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder are all in their late 30s or early 40s. Teremoana sees himself as one of the next on the heavyweight conveyor belt.He states that [Moses] Itauma, [Agit] Kabayel and himself will be the headline-makers over the next few years, and was quick to put himself alongside some of the divisions best in future heavyweight scraps.When people ask if I want to fight Justis [Huni], yeah I want to fight Justis, he explained at the final press conference before Wednesdays fight.I want to fight Itauma. I want to fight [Filip] Hrgovic. I want to fight [Daniel] Dubois. I want to fight Usyk, Kabayel. I want to fight all of these people. But obviously Ive got to earn my way there.Touching on Justis again, because I just want to make it clear that I dont care too much about politics, Teremoana continued. I only want to prove that I am the best fighter in the world.When it comes to that fight, I do think it would fill a stadium. Some people say hes the best Australian fighter [at heavyweight]. And some people say that I am. But Teremoana believes that Matchroom Boxings funding Down Under will breathe life into the potential of this fight between him and a natural rival in Justis Huni (13-1, 7 KOs).The world is at our feet, he said.Wednesdays fight with Savage has been designed by Matchroom, in part, to see Teremoana answer a couple of questions. Hes only heard the bell at the start of 13 different rounds, and hasnt had to box off the back foot across these outings. Savage isnt a recognized name in the division, but being the first man to stop the American is the dangling carrot for Teremoana.Promoter Eddie Hearn has been open about the thinking behind the matchup. Nobody else wanted this fight, but Savage did, he said this week, framing it as the live test Teremoana's rise has been missing, rather than another walkover on the pile.Teremoana isn't dismissing Savage entirely, either there's a flicker of genuine respect underneath the bravado. I've seen his 10-round fight against Brandon Moore, and I've got to give him respect, Teremoana said. "He's got good movement. I like the way he paces himself for a pro heavyweight fighter. I'm not taking this guy easy." Then, almost as an afterthought, the boast returned: I think I'm about 260 pounds. Pure muscle. Pure prettiness.The bigger picture, though, is the one Teremoana keeps steering the conversation back toward a heavyweight division on the verge of changing hands entirely. Usyk has already vacated his belts. Fury is deep into what he insists is his final comeback. Joshua is on the other end of endless, draining negotiations with his fellow Englishman. Wilder is circling the exit in his own way.Whatever happens over the next 12 months at the top of the division, it will not be this generation writing the final chapter it'll be whoever's left standing when the old guard finally clears out. Boxing moves on quickly.Teremoana wants his name on that list, alongside Itauma and Kabayel. There will of course be more. Dubois isnt going anywhere fast, and he happens to be the heavyweight that Teremoana believes is the hardest hitting in the division.Whether Teremoanas ambition survives contact with Savage on Wednesday is precisely the point of putting him in the ring in the first place. Quick knockouts have bought Teremoana the platform. This is where he has to start proving the rest of it.Nothing is given at heavyweight. It's the one division where history keeps repeating itself and where careers are made or broken by a single punch. Teremoana is building his by being the man throwing that punch. On Wednesday, he finds out again whether that's enough.

More people watched their All-Star game than did the NBAs, and TV viewership ranked second all-time for the event.Those factoids are already lost to the past amid a league grappling with a stark delineation between reality and social media. Now it has to sift through the muck and stay focused amid all the discourse that evolves into headlines.They come non-stop, the latest occurring Saturday when the Skys DiJonai Carrington committed a Flagrant Foul 2 on the Fevers Sophie Cunningham. After the automatic ejection, she took to social media to say White privilege afterward while tagging the Fever. The league has not announced any further punishment for Carrington.We still have a league to run, WNBA chief marketing officer Phil Cook told Yahoo Sports on the first night of All-Stars WNBA Live event. We still need to inform the fans: when are the games, who's playing, whats an important piece of this game we should be cognizant of, where can I watch it, whens it on?That part of our job has to go on irrespective of the noise and the clutter. But we see it all. And we talk about it often.The challenge is juggling it.The Taylor Swift Effect and cultural reachMarketing strictly toward already established sports fans is no longer the path toward growth for any league, the 30-year-old WNBA included.A study released last month by Genius Sports as part of The Fan Project found that fans of womens sports are more willing to spend particularly when a brand uses an athlete in storytelling and 88.6% of womens sports fans view fan apparel as culturally meaningful, even if theyd never purchased a ticket to a game.We know that there's an audience out there who may enter the WNBA only through the cultural door, Cook said. They might just be fans of sneakers or fashion or personal care products, so why not invite them into our league? They dont have to come in through the 94-by-50 [court-sized] door, they can come in through a different door.Those companies surrounded him at WNBA Live, where 34 partners and licensees, including Dicks Sporting Goods, Coach and Ally Financial, leaned into player-led merchandise. Fathers cited their daughters interest in watching games for the first time, and the data bore out the anecdotes.Viewership for the Chiefs 2024 Super Bowl win reached a record 123.7 million, with a 24% jump in 18-to-24-year-old women. Nearly two-thirds of Gen Z (ages 14-29) and millennial women (ages 30-45) held a favorable opinion of the NFL in December 2023, a growth of 11% from July, according to the Morning Consult. Swift attended her first game that September.While we dont have that magnetic of a draw, I think we have grants who are willing to invest with us in that space and bring their audience into their ecosystem, Cook said.More attention, more noiseYet, opening that many doors creates the unintended consequence of ushering in unwelcome company. As droves of new fans step in, so, too, do people and groups unwilling to learn about the leagues history or choosing to chase their own agendas. Some long-time fans feel like the intimate space they created is being infiltrated.It often manifests online in snippets of misinformation, incorrect character-based claims and allegations with an impact on real people. Players who utilized social media to build their brands in an era of little investment vary in how they still regard the medium.The internet is going to create whatever narratives theyre going to create, Lynx guard Courtney Williams, who runs the popular StudBudz live stream during All-Star, said. You could have someone blatantly lying and the internet will take it and run with it. That aint got s*** to do with the league. You know what Im saying? Like, if you want to feed into the narrative, thats your business. In one, Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas put her closed fist on Clarks neck while the guard was on the ground. It was a similar tenor to past remarks about officiating, from her and coaches around the league.The league retroactively assessed Thomas a Flagrant Foul 2 the next day as noise around the play ratcheted up. It ate up all of the leagues oxygen for more than a week, intensified by hatred and threats online.Entering the All-Star break in late July, Aces guard Chelsea Gray shared a screenshot of a racial slur she received on social media. It sparked a broader conversation about player safety, and reopened one on how the league could mitigate the nasty online discourse. That led to additional criticism of Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who was already under a microscope ahead of another tentpole event.Sifting through the discourseThe marketing team blocks out that noise, but doesnt ignore it.Were cognizant of the tone, the tonality, Cook said. When theres a surging story that is swallowing media, we stay the course, we do our job, we inform, we educate, we inspire. We may pause on some other stories were set to release [and] navigate where we can.Cook said there are a lot of very emotional conversations within the leagues front office, from Engelbert on down, about the online discourse. People flood the mentions of the leagues social media accounts, and those monitoring the channels are forced to read what can be very depressing, defeating comments, he said.Thats kind of what makes our league very, very honest and transparent, internally anyway, is that we have that ability to bring these issues to the forefront and have honest discussions about it, Cook said. I think its really important. Ive worked in places where these things get buried and we dont talk about it, and its hard, because it just festers. It feels like no one is listening and no one is caring. And thats the last thing that we try to portray at the W. It really is.The league took a self-inflicted hit when its social channels shared a video of Paige Bueckers and Reese betting on their Wings-Dream matchup in the first game back from All-Star weekend. Wagering on a game is forbidden by the CBA. A league spokesperson said the deleted post was intended to be lighthearted, and we recognized that the post missed the mark and addressed the matter internally.The latest lingering controversy the league fell into is the debate around transgender womens participation in womens sports after Fever reserve Sophie Cunningham answered a question about it for an ESPN profile, and stood behind her response to local reporters days later.Rallies for and against it were held during the Fevers previous road trip, while more are in the works for their upcoming games. In Seattle, the league fined Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton and suspended her for five home games after comments made to two fans holding pro-Cunningham signs at the Storm-Fever game last week.Last week, Cunningham urged everyone to get back to basketball. That alone only fueled more furious typing and critiques. There is nothing too small for the leagues fans and followers to latch onto; nothing too minuscule to investigate deeper.Its a much more emotional league than I anticipated it being, you know? Cook said. I was going to come in and run a sports league, right? Its different. But its what makes it so special, and when you do make an impact, its all the better.

After logging 86 minutes in a key 2-2 draw Aug. 1 at Inter Miami, he wasnt available in either of the Crews first two Leagues Cup games wins over Atlas FC and CF Pachuca.Asked for an update on Thiar on Aug. 10 at Ohio Health Performance Center, interim head coach Laurent Courtois said the speedy forward has regressed after returning from the month-long World Cup break.He had to kind of force it a little bit to come back because he wanted to contribute so bad, and we [also] needed him so bad, Courtois said. So, maybe we both went a little bit faster than maybe we wouldve wanted for his total recovery, and right now were going to be able to really give him a chance to put this behind him once and for all but it needed to be taken care of, so this is what were going to do this time.When healthy, Thiar provides speed up front to stretch the field. He was acquired two days before the Crew sent forward Jacen Russell-Rowe to Toulouse FC of Frances Ligue 1 on Feb. 2, but hasn't been healthy enough to make a big impact offensively. Thiar has started in just three of the 12 MLS games he's appeared in, scoring one goal July 25 in a 2-1 victory over rival FC Cincinnati.Combined with star forward Wessam Abou Alis season-ending knee injury, not having Thiars speed and skill creates quite a challenge on the attack. Alabama football will hold its first scrimmage of fall camp on Thursday, and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb will be looking for his top two quarterbacks Austin Mack and Keelon Russell to do more than just read defenses and deliver the ball.He wants to see some command. Some leadership. And the ability to rally teammates at critical moments."One of the challenges is command of a practice. I want to know what it feels like when the chips are down a little bit in a practice or maybe we had a three and out and didn't move the ball, what do they look like? How do their teammates respond to them?," Grubb said Monday. "Certainly you can't just have the rah-rah guy start if he isn't moving the ball. But I'm looking for command because they're both capable physically of making all the plays."The Crimson Tide opens the season on Sept. 5 at home against East Carolina, giving head coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff less than three weeks to make a decision. DeBoer has said the sooner a starter can be named, the better, but isn't rushing the process with two inexperienced options, neither of whom have notched a career start yet. Grubb is hopeful that the scrimmage will reveal more about the two candidates' resolve in the face of difficulty. And to date, there hasn't been much else to separate them."I think if it's even money, (leadership) plays a really big part," Grubb added. "If all things are equal statistically, how they're playing, all those things, then you're always looking for the guy who can lead the football team a little bit better. But at the end of the day you still have to have a guy who can make plays. I've coached guys who are extremely quiet in practice and are exceptional leaders on Saturday.
