(Jim Franco/Times Union) (Jim Franco/Times Union) The Siena men's basketball program has made special memories at University of Dayton Arena. The Saints will return there on Tuesday, Nov. 10, when they play the Flyers of the Atlantic 10 in a nonleague game next season. Dayton announced its nonconference schedule on Monday morning. Two of Siena'sNCAA Tournament wins came in Dayton's building- a 81-77 opening-round victory over Alcorn State in 2002 and a 74-72 double-overtime triumph over Ohio State in the first round in 2009.The Saints and Flyers have metonly once. Dayton beat Siena 87-67 at Dayton Arena on Jan. 2, 2001 during Louis Orr's only season as Siena coach.Dayton is coached by Anthony Grant, entering his 10th season. The Flyers are coming off five straight 20-win seasons, including a 25-12 record in 2025-26. Dayton lost to VCU in the A10 championship game and reached the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals. The Flyers return two starters from last year's team- 7-1 junior forward Amael L'Etang, who averaged 11.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, and 6-6 forward Jaiun Simon (5.6 ppg). They added 6-9 junior forward Grant Randall, a Quinnipiac transfer who played against Siena twice in the Metro Conference.Siena athletic director John D'Argenio is a 1982 Dayton graduate.Entering its first year under head coach Nevada Smith, Siena hasn't announced its nonconference schedule yet as some contracts are being finalized.Smith had said Siena could "possibly" play at St. John's next season. However, Red Storm coach Rick Pitino said Saturday from his box at Saratoga Race Course that St. John's isn't going to play Siena- either at Madison Square Garden or on campus at Carnesecca Arena.Siena will open the regular season Nov. 2 at Bryant. The Saints are also expected to play Syracuse, led by former Saints coach Gerry McNamara, in a mid-October exhibition game at MVP Arena that hasn't been finalized yet.If Siena successfully defends its Metro Conference title, the Saints could end up back at Dayton Arena again in March for the NCAA Tournament's opening round, which is held annually in Dayton.SubscribeTheres more to Albany with the Times Union. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJoey McGuire feels Texas Tech is the most hated team in college footballThe Texas Tech football program is coming off an outstanding 2025 season and is looking to build on it in 2026.The Red Raiders finished the 2025 season with a 12-2 record after winning the Big 12 title over the BYU Cougars. They qualified for the College Football Playoff before losing to the Oregon Ducks in one of the CFP quarterfinals (Orange Bowl). Joey McGuire is heading into his fifth season as the Red Raiders head coach and has a 35-18 record over the last four seasons. Hes done a great job building the program up, even though a lot of college football fans dont like the way the Red Raiders have gone about things, whether its the Brendan Sorsby situation or spending a lot of NIL money on their roster. MORE:Report: A 20-team College Football Playoff format could be discussed on MondayMcGuire likes how hated the Red Raiders have become and likes being the villain. Were the most hated team in college football. And I absolutely love it, McGuire told his team, via On3s Brett McMurphy. The Red Raiders will have a new starting quarterback for the 2026 season after Behren Morton led the way last year. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Mets will attempt to regroup for 2027.If there's a season.MLB's ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations could force a full or partial lockout next year.If baseball is to be played, the Mets will undoubtedly do their best to improve the roster on both sides of the ball. The top impending free agent is back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers a few days before the deadline. If the Dodgers are unable to sign Skubal to a long-term extension or convince him to re-sign during the offseason, the Mets could swoop in.Mets are 'under-the-radar' threat for Skubal"The widespread consensus is that Los Angeles was both best equipped to trade for Skubal (check) and best equipped to sign him as a free agent," FanSided's Christopher Kline wrote. "We shall see how CBA negotiations impact the marketplace and L.A.'s ability to continue blowing cash all over the place, but the Mets are an under-the-radar threat here."The Mets were sellers at this year's deadline. Their postseason hopes are practically slim to none.New York's rotation depth lessened with the trades of Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays and Clay Holmes to the Chicago Cubs.MORE:MLB experts voted Red Sox's Adley Rutschman trade as most surprising by wide marginSigning Skubal would put a jolt of energy back into the fanbase after a rough season, and Mets owner Steve Cohen could play a huge role in the pursuit of the left-hander."Steve Cohen has the deepest pockets in the Majors. If any team can win a bidding war with the two-time defending champs straight up, it's probably the Mets," Kline added. "New York has a need for frontline starting pitching after the Freddy Peralta trade backfired. Skubal and Nolan McLean is one heckuva one-two punch for the foreseeable future, with the Mets' young core on the verge of a breakthrough one which Skubal can spearhead."There will be plenty of interested suitors for Skubal. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM30-year-old Spanish star’s arrival could be the best thing for Marc Bernal – Opinion30-year-old Spanish stars arrival could be the best thing for Marc Bernal OpinionWhen Barcelona are linked with a world-class player, one of the first questions fans ask is always the same: What does this mean for the youngsters? That has certainly been the case with Rodri. The Manchester City midfielder is widely regarded as one of the finest holding midfielders in the world, and the idea of him arriving at Barcelona has sparked concerns about Bernals future. Those concerns are misplaced. If anything, signing Rodri would increase Bernals chances of becoming Baras long-term No. 6 rather than reduce them.Barcelona should avoid repeating an old mistakeRodri will be an important signing for Barcelona. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)For years after Sergio Busquets began declining, Barcelona searched desperately for his successor.Different players were tried, systems were adjusted, and makeshift solutions became the norm. The club spent years asking who would replace Busquets without preparing for it.That is exactly the mistake they now have the opportunity to avoid with Rodri.Instead of throwing Bernal into the deep end at 19 and asking him to thrive immediately in one of footballs most demanding positions, Barcelona could allow him to develop behind a genuine elite reference point. That is a luxury very few clubs get.Learning from the best mattersThere is no substitute for experience.Training every day alongside Rodri would expose Bernal to the habits, positioning, communication and decision-making that have made the Spaniard arguably the best defensive midfielder of his generation. The biggest improvements for young midfielders often happen on the training ground.Watching how Rodri scans before receiving the ball, how he controls the tempo under pressure, when he steps into midfield and when he simply recycles possession could accelerate Bernals tactical education far more than playing every minute before he is ready.Young players do not only develop through minutes. They develop through the environment they are part of.There is no rushThis is the most important point. Rodri is 30. If Bara were to sign him, it would most likely be a three or four-season punt rather than a decade-long investment.Rodri can elevate the Barcelona midfield further. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)That timeline works perfectly for Bernal. By the time Rodri nears the end of his Bara career, the teenager would be 22 or 23 years old.He would be physically stronger, tactically sharper and mentally better equipped to lead Barcelonas midfield.Compare that to asking a teenager to shoulder those responsibilities immediately, and the difference is as clear as night and day.Competition should be embracedElite clubs are built on competition for places. They have at least two players for each position capable of starting on any given day.Barcelona cannot afford to reject world-class players simply because they have talented youngsters waiting in the wings. The objective is to create the strongest possible squad while ensuring the next generation is prepared when its time comes.Bernal should not view Rodri as a roadblock. He should see him as the perfect mentor.Barcelonas greatest eras were built on succession planning. While signing Rodri may not always have been the clubs plan, the timing could not be better.Rodri can be the bridge that helps Bernal become Baras pivot for the next decade and longer.Rather than asking, What happens to Marc Bernal if Rodri signs?, perhaps the better question is this:What if Rodri is exactly the player who helps Barcelona produce the next great No. 6?0 Comments 0 Shares 212 Views 0 Reviews
