SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCriticism of empty seats and ticket prices at EuropeansAmy Hunt won the women's 100m final on Monday evening but the stadium was nowhere near full [Reuters]Nearly 10,000 seats were empty at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium for the European Athletics Championships on Monday evening. A crowd of 13,623 watched as Britain's 24-year-old sprinter Amy Hunt stormed to her first senior international title, in a stadium that has a capacity of 23,000.Athletics supporters blamed ticket prices, with some describing them as "extortionate", while BBC commentator Steve Cram commented that spectator numbers were a "little disappointing".But Birmingham 2026 organisers said they were "delighted" with ticket sales, which have "far surpassed" their targets with "Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening sessions approaching sell-out, with several other sessions close to capacity".On Monday, Category A tickets for the home straight cost 150 with no concessions for juniors. For the men's 100m final on Tuesday, those same seats cost 110, again with no concessions - while a similar ticket for the same final in Rome two years ago was 88 euros (75).It is Britain's first time hosting the championships in their 92-year history.'Pork rolls for 18.50'The Alexander Stadium was 55% full on Monday morning, 59% full by the evening and 56% full on Tuesday morning, according to figures from the organisers.Jenny Meadows, Keely Hodgkinson's co-coach, posted on social media to say: "Believe it's full for some final evenings but a shame we couldn't fill the stadium for the duration."British Olympian Sharron Davies also took to social media: "We must bid for more events but we must make it affordable, so we get to enjoy it first hand, fill stadiums, support our athletes, promote our country & inspire generations to come to love sport."Davies also criticised how official food vendors in the stadium were selling pork rolls for 18.50 and hot dogs for 15.During coverage of the Women's 100m final on Monday night, BBC commentator Cram added: "Little disappointing in terms of spectators I have to say that, particularly down the back straight there. "There's not many people at all in those stands. I'm sure Birmingham is going to get to grips with these champs pretty quickly."Chris Brown was in the stadium on Monday evening, where he photographed rows of empty seats. Speaking to the BBC, the 40-year-old said: "I think they have the pricing for the weekdays a little off. The cheapest tickets are 26, which is reasonable and most people have bought those and the back rows are full. "Maybe they should invite everyone down to the lower seats to at least make it look good on TV."The view from the 40 to 26 tickets is pretty much the same, so that price category has become rather redundant. 110 for the best seats I think is reasonable for a weekend evening session, but not mid-week."But also, the Commonwealth Games may have had an impact, as not many will attend both and both are in the UK within the same fortnight."There are many fans in attendance in Birmingham who are international, which is great to see, but it's disappointing that many Brits haven't bothered."Chris Brown said he found it disappointing that British fans were not turning out in greater numbers for the championships [Chris Brown]Adam Hilton is set to travel from Manchester to Birmingham for this Saturday's evening session. The 34-year-old paid 120 for two tickets for him and his girlfriend - but said he "doesn't feel [it was] value for money" and he would consider no longer going if there was an option to get a refund. "Seeing the opening day [Monday] felt very disappointing to see the empty seats, especially in the evening session," he said. "In summer, with the good weather, you'd like to see it full-ish."It's a shame, as it seems to be a trend across most sports where fans are seemingly being priced out of events that should be way more accessible. "For the first European Championships in the UK ever, you'd except to get bums on seats - and a lot of kids who could then learn to love the sport and take it up going forward, especially when there's a major event outside of London." Adam Hilton and his girlfriend are set to travel from Manchester to Birmingham this Saturday [Adam Hilton]Hilton joined others who have criticised the lack of transport infrastructure around the stadium, with the nearest train station a mile's walk away and shuttle buses ferrying fans from the city centre, alongside a park and ride service. Hilton, who is set to drive, said he could only find a prepaid parking space two miles (3km) away for Saturday. This is Britain's first time hosting the European Athletics Championships [Chris Brown]One athletics fan urged organisers on social media to "fill the place" with "cheap door tickets".Another said they decided against buying tickets as it would cost his family "more than a holiday" when travel and accommodation for one night was factored in.Organisers said a family of four could attend the event for 30.Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said she expected attendances to increase as the championships continued."It is true that over the past few days we haven't sold out the stadiums but we are seeing those numbers rising steadily," she said. "We have some amazing events coming up, the men's 100m final, people like Keely Hodgkinson competing and I think you will see that really rise in the next few days."She added she thought organisers have "pretty good job here" over ticket prices with "half of all the tickets for the events here in Birmingham are under 30".A Birmingham 2026 spokesperson expressed delight at the ticket sales which "have far surpassed our targets". "Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening sessions are approaching sell-out, with several other sessions close to capacity," they added."There are still opportunities to be part of the championships at incredibly good value."After a fantastic opening day of competition, we're looking forward to welcoming many more spectators to Alexander Stadium throughout the week and sharing more memorable moments of world-class athletics."Follow BBC Birmingham on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM49ers won't play many starters on Thursday nightThe Titans plan to play their starters in Thursday's preseason opener against the 49ers, but they won't have many first-stringers lined up against them. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said at a press conference on Tuesday that the team will be sitting most of its starters. "There won't be many starters playing," Shanahan said. "We'll see, with injuries today and stuff and that doesn't mean none. But we've got to balance that out. We haven't told the players yet, so we'll wait until we do that with them this afternoon."Shanahan's decision was likely impacted by Tuesday's joint practice between the teams, but the 49ers have several players that would likely be sitting due to injury even if they went with a different plan. Wide receiver Mike Evans suited up for practice on Tuesday for the first time in over a week while running back Christian McCaffrey and defensive end Nick Bosa headlined the list of players who remained out.0 Comments 0 Shares 325 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow golfers plan to adapt to extreme heat at FedEx St. Jude ChampionshipThis isn't exactly breaking news, but it's going to be hot at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The tournament runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 16 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, and the forecast calls for temperatures even hotter than usual. And while the world's best golfers routinely play in hot weather, there's some adjusting that usually comes along with it.Justin Rose, the tournament's defending champion, said Aug. 11 that he used a parasol during a practice round and might do that again during the actual tournament."It's like 20 degrees cooler under the umbrella," Rose said. "I think especially as the week cranks up towards 100 degrees on the weekend, that might be something I will do, which is something I haven't done before, to be honest with you, but I used it in the practice round today, and it definitely made a difference."For Michael Brennan, who won the Wyndham Championship on Aug. 9 to make the FedExCup Playoffs and earn a spot in the field, it's all about electrolytes."I find that I can have as much electrolytes basically as I want," Brennan said. "I mean, I'll go through five a day plus, and it doesn't make me feel bad, and I actually feel better. If I don't, then my muscles kind of you feel a little sluggish, muscles in your hands start to cramp up a little bit. So just maybe shortening the practice a little on Tuesday, Wednesday, and drinking a ton of water."Both Rose and Brennan said they're especially focused on hydration in the days leading up to the start of the tournament so as to make sure they don't fall behind before play officially begins. The heat is typically part of the story of the tournament. In 2023, Lucas Glover went viral when he paused before the 18th tee and dunked his hands into a cooler. By the end of the day, Glover looked like he'd run through a sprinkler because of how much he'd sweat. He ultimately won the tournament as part of his remarkable finish to the 2023 season. And while the heat will absolutely be a factor all week, the golfers know it's the same for everyone."Listen, everybody's in the same boat," Rose said.Weather for the weekWednesday: high of 95 degrees, low of 78Thursday: high of 96 degrees, low of 78Friday: high of 98 degrees, low of 78Saturday: high of 99 degrees, low of 78Sunday: high of 100 degrees, low of 78Reach sports writer Jonah Dylan at jonah.dylan@commercialappeal.comor on X @thejonahdylan.This article originally appeared on Memphis Commercial Appeal: How golfers plan to adapt to extreme heat at FedEx St. Jude Championship0 Comments 0 Shares 340 Views 0 Reviews -

Spaun to the FedEx St Jude Championship title 12 months ago.The 46-year-olds ability to remain competitive at his age over the past few years has been truly remarkable.Justin Rose came incredibly close to winning The Masters last year and he had a two-shot lead at Augusta National heading into the back nine this year as well.Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty ImagesRose missed the cut at The Open in his last tournament, but hell be hoping that his three-week layoff will have re-energized him.The Englishman still has all of the tools needed to win on the PGA Tour, and despite his patchy recent form, he will be confident of contending at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. However, the humidity in Memphis this week will undoubtedly prove challenging for Rose.Justin Rose admits hell try something for the first time at the FedEx St. JudeRose addressed the media at TPC Southwind on Tuesday ahead of the start of the FedEx St Jude Championship later this week. The Englishman was asked how he plans on handling the heat in Memphis this week, with temperatures set to rise over 100 degrees during the four days of tournament play. And Rose admitted that he is set to try something for the first time in his career.I think just staying on top of the discipline, the obvious things. Clearly hydration, I mean, thats so obvious. I think sort of understanding that even at the beginning part of the week just making sure by Tuesday, Wednesday, youre already off to good habits. If you get behind on one particular day, it feels like actually its quite hard to catch up, he said. Its sometimes making sure youre ahead of the game by the time you get to the golf course. Its not just, okay, Im now on the golf course, lets drink a lot of water. Its just being ahead of things this week.Photo by Orlando Ramirez/Getty ImagesIm considering using a parasol, umbrella. Its like 20 degrees cooler under the umbrella. I think especially as the week cranks up towards 100 degrees on the weekend, that might be something I will do, which is something I havent done before, to be honest with you, but I used it in the practice round today, and it definitely made a difference.Theres a little bit of breeze out there today, which kind of made it feel manageable.Listen, everybodys in the same boat. Its a long three weeks actually, as Im talking about doing things well daily. But if you want to kind of continue your momentum through the FedExCup Playoffs, theres a lot of discipline required this next month or so.That will be a smart move from Rose and, who knows? It may well enable him to perform better in the intense heat.Justin Rose assesses his 2026 PGA Tour season so farRose was asked to share how he feels about his season as a whole so far in 2026.Yeah, got off to a great start winning early, which is always really, really nice, kind of sets momentum for the year, he replied.I had a great win and won by seven at the Farmers, which is one of my most enjoyable wins, one of my most stress-free wins on Tour. That really felt like it gave me the opportunity to have a big season.Felt like since then I showed elements and showed good form. Obviously the Masters, I played great golf there. Thats the one that I look back and feel like that one got away. Then the rest of the season, Im kind of waiting to sort of really catch fire again. I played some good, solid golf, but Im kind of waiting for a run. Hopefully the three weeks off that weve just had is a bit of a refresher now, and I can really focus on this last, final push.0 Comments 0 Shares 346 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Hansi Flick has asked 6 Barcelona stars to train away from his squadWhy Hansi Flick has asked 6 Barcelona stars to train away from his squadBarcelona head coach Hansi Flick requested for six members of the current first-team setup in Catalunyas capital to train separately from the rest of his players on Tuesday.Thats according to Mundo Deportivo, who have provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes at the Ciutat Esportiva.Barcelona are of course currently in the thick of pre-season preparations with a view to the fast-approaching 2026/27 campaign. Training drills and methods have therefore been ramped up a notch over recent days, as players inch towards full match fitness. This step up gave rise to its first casualty on Monday, however, as Roony Bardghji was forced out of training with what was later revealed to be a torn ACL in his right knee.In turn, it should not come as a major surprise to hear of cautionary measures since being taken by Hansi Flick and his staff. As per a report from MD, all of Marc Casad, Hctor Fort, Jofre Torrents, Tommy Marqus, Toni Fernndez, and Guille Fernndez were put through their paces in training away from their teammates earlier today. The reason? All six are considered as being on the exit ramp, with the Blaugrana therefore keen to avoid a repeat of the Bardghji situation, which has forced the Swede to stay put for the season ahead.Conor Laird GSFN0 Comments 0 Shares 405 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJust how much can we learn from Saints' joint practice with Jaguars? With Jaguars coach Liam Coen announcing that he won't play his starters in the first preseason game every one of these practice reps becomes that much more valuable. This is the Saints' first chance to pit their best against their opponent's best. And with that in mind, here are four matchups we'll be watching closely:Saints WR Jordyn Tyson vs. Jaguars CB Travis HunterHunter has secured his place on top of Jacksonville's depth chart at cornerback, and he's looking to build off of a rookie year full of encouraging moments but short on game tape after he was shut down with a knee injury after Week 7. Similarly, Saints fans had to wait to see Tyson until the Saints opened up training camp because they kept him on ice throughout the spring to rest an injured hamstring. Now both young pros are playing well. Seeing who comes out ahead should be one of Thursday's biggest draws.Jaguars LT Anton Harrison vs. Saints EDGE Chase YoungHarrison started the last three seasons at right tackle, and he has looked like the Jags' best blocker regardless of position. But now he's lining up on the left side (where he played in college at Oklahoma) while projected starter Cole Van Lanen deals with an injury. This is a great test for Young against one of the league's better young tackles. The Saints are eager to see Young take the next step after breaking out with ten sacks last season. He's talked a lot of trash and taken on a more vocal role as a leader during practice. Winning his battles with Harrison would be tremendous.Saints RT Taliese Fuaga vs. Jaguars EDGE Travon WalkerWalker has caught some heat for not being as effective a pass rusher as the guy drafted right behind him (Aidan Hutchinson), but he's consistently won his matchups with the Jaguars' right tackles at training camp and is exactly the type of high-end athlete who gave Fuaga trouble last season. Fuaga did have to fight through a couple of different injuries last season so proving he can stand up to one of the Jags' top edge rushers would inspire real confidence. Josh Hines-Allen is one to watch, too, but it sounds like he's mainly rushing off the right side of the formation (and against Saints left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.).Jaguars WR Parker Washington vs. Saints CB Washington broke out last season with 65 catches for 954 yards and six touchdowns (including thee playoffs), quickly asserting himself as one of Trevor Lawrence's favorite targets. He split time in the slot with Jakobi Meyers but was targeted more often when he did line up inside, leading Jacksonville in yards (458) and touchdowns (3) by healthy margins. He'll be the one to watch when the Saints roll out their nickel personnel with safety Jonas Sanker manning the slot. He's had his hands full with Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson rotating into the slot throughout training camp, but getting to work against another team's talent will show us if he's ready to hold it down when the season starts. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: Just how much can we learn from Saints' joint practice with Jaguars?0 Comments 0 Shares 276 Views 0 Reviews -
