He is primarily a left-back, but can also serve as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so.However, there are some question marks over whether Raum can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. Still, we can expect him to bring more quality and depth to Man United head coach Michael Carricks defence. He is capable of challenging for a regular starting place at the Theatre of Dreams next season.At 28, Raum is playing in his prime, which makes him a worthy target for the Red Devils to consider this month. With all things considered, Carrick should focus on going for a left-back with his skill set before the end of this transfer window.

With recurring rain showers in Pennsylvania this summer, fishing conditions varied at different lakes, but fish were biting for those who knew how to adapt.Mark Melega, 57, of Rices Landing and Lee Corazzi, 66, of Fredericktown, have fished in tournaments for years and have found ways to get the fish to bite.We had a good year, Melega said.The cousins fish in a variety of tournaments with their teammate Bucky Mounts of Washington. They fish from Erie to West Virgina and many lakes and rivers in between.Corazzi said the fishing continues to improve, especially on the Monongahela River. We made it several years in a row, this is the fourth time actually, Melega said.The championship is held in different locations. In past years, it was in places like Kentucky and Florida.As an individual, Melega fishes in the Washington Bassmasters Club. Im winning the angler of the year, but there are a couple events left, he said.You have to catch a lot of fish to be the leader.In Pennsylvania, they competed on the Ohio River for a couple events and they won tournaments on the Monongahela fishing for smallmouth bass.The rivers were flooded this year, a lot of high water, dirty water, Melega said. With the turbid conditions, they had to use brighter colored baits than normal. We did real good on orange colored crawfish and crankbaits. The chartreuse grub has become so popular this year.They place a quarter-ounce head on the plastic bait to reach the depth of the fish.It seemed like with the heavy current and dirty water, they really wanted to chase baits this year and they chased that crank bait really well and that current puts the fish at the bank. Everybody did good, but we did better, Melega said about their wins.It was a great early season."Now in the beginning of August, he said its midseason with summer starting to give way to fall. The river was 75 degrees, and he only found 80-degree water for a short period of time. Thats kind of cool for the summer. And it was off color, dirty and they really wanted to chase the brightest colored baits (the fish) could find. If you tried natural color things, it didnt seem to work, Melaga said.One of the more popular colors people use, pumpkin, blended into many of the water conditions and fish couldnt find it like other years. They couldnt see it, he said. Orange and chartreuse were the main deal this year. Anything white would stand out well.The fish they caught in the tournaments were bigger than some other years. In one tournament in Pittsburgh, he caught his five bass with total weights of 14 and 13 pounds. Thats the biggest five bass Ive ever caught in the Pittsburgh area, Melega said. Thats a big average size fish.Larger fish is a trend in the Three Rivers region. I think the fish are maturing. We are going from two, three years ago where there were thousands of fish. Now its like theres still a lot of fish, but they really picked up in size 16-, 17- and 18-inch size fish now, Melega said. A couple years ago, they were 12, 13 inches.They also like to fish Lake Wilhelm, Pymatuning Reservoir and Conneaut Lake. To me, thats all largemouth country. The Pymatuning I think is one of the greatest largemouth fisheries in the state, Melega said.The massive lake has smallmouths, But they seem to only get caught in the spring and fall. I just think they live just off shore most of the time, he said, thinking they are following the baitfish around the lake.For the largemouth bass, they fish along the large lily pad beds. Boy, thats where you catch 3-, 4-, 5-pound fish, he said.They also do well fishing along the old roadbeds that were there before the reservoir was made. They fish Carolina rigs with green and blue colors out in the middle of the lake over the roadbeds. Those spots are also good spots for musky anglers to troll for massive muskellunge.The weather played a factor for the trio and created darker waters. You get hot 90-degree days and then you get rain. And then you get whatever happens to that water whether its some type of algae bloom or whatever, Melega said.With changing water conditions, Melega and his teammates like to try to fish a day or two before a tournament to better understand whats happening. We find where theres some fish biting and maybe one of us has prior knowledge from a year ago or something, he said. They may recall that during that time of year a certain color may work better and start off with what worked in the past. We hold our heads together and we come up with a pretty good plan that works out a lot of the times."When it comes to fishing gear and tactics, he always keeps an open mind. I think every year we buy more and more stuff, and rarely does it come in play. More than a lure, a technique pops up like a drop shot. Recently, a drop shot has become a major player almost everywhere we go. A couple years ago, we didnt even take a drop shot with us, he said.Drop shot fishing involves having the weight placed at the end of the line and having the bait float above the sinker. The technique keeps the bait up where you think the fish will see it.Some anglers keep the bait at about 12 inches or more. Melega has had luck with 18 to 20 inches. Its a little higher than normal, he said.Weve got a lot of grass now, especially in the river theres hydrilla growing all summer. You got to be above that stuff, he said. Thats what makes it work. They got to be able to see the bait. It cant be buried down in the grass.This year, hes been finding the fish closer to the bottom on lakes like Conneaut and Wilhelm. The Carolina rig and drop shot, something where you got the weight on the bottom and a bait floating behind it has been the deal this year. Next year, it can be something totally different, he said.At Conneaut, Melega won a July 31 tournament to benefit United Way. It was an event where local anglers teamed up with pro anglers. He competed with Justin Welker of Westford and they were using drop shots and a flipping stick. We caught the winning catch of 23 pounds, 9 ounces. We caught fish offshore all day long in these deep weeds, Melega said.When asked about his professional level in the sport, Melega said they are like Triple A anglers. We do state level, if you advance through the states, you get to go to some of the regionals or nationals. A couple years ago, I made it all the way to the national championship at that Bassmaster Classic in Maine. He placed eighth.He still has a regular job unlike the true professionals in the sport. The pros are so much better than regular people that people dont even understand. They are on a whole other level, Melega said.He fishes about four days a week where the pros are on the water every day for three months at a time.Ned rig fishingCorazzi likes using Ned rigs, which are a flat-top jig head connected to a plastic bait. The jig bounces off the bottom, allowing the floating bait to stand straight up.I pour my own heads, he said. He prefers Owner and BKK hooks that work well with Ned setups, including a tab that holds the plastic in place. They hold up, they dont bend. I guess they are high carbon steel. You can bring in pretty big fish on those things where some of the factory hooks for Neds. You set the hook on them, and if you have like 8-pound line and you set the hook, theres a real good chance your bending that hook straight out."They use natural color plastics that are between two and three inches long. Green pumpkin, watermelon and some of the variations of those natural colors, Corazzi said.To see what the fish prefer, Corazzi fishes with Ned rigs out the back of the boat and Melega experiments with four or five rods with other techniques and lures like crank baits. When one of us starts getting dialed in, either one will switch to that technique, Melega said.Corazzi counters, Im mister consistency, boring. This is what Im going to do and if theyre going to bite it, its going to be in the water. Hes mister experiment.Lake Erie fishing techniquesWhen it comes to fishing the Great Lake in northwestern Pennsylvania, they target walleyes and smallmouths and head to Presque Isle Bay for largemouths.The challenge with Erie is the weather conditions, as he finds they could be fishing in waves several feet high. One tournament this year was moved from the lake to the bay because the waves were too rough.He liked flipping beaver-style soft plastic baits in the thick vegetation and drop shots played well too.In Lake Erie, Corazzi made heavier Ned rigs and drop shots to fish between 22 and 28 feet where the fish were swimming in mid-July. They were all in that little zone, he said about drifting.Melega remembers fishing when there were five foot waves on the lake. The fun part is when the bass jumps out of the top of the wave and hes like two feet above the wave. Then the wave goes by and your fish is like seven feet up in the air and comes crashing down and you lose them; your hook pops up out. Thats fun.In addition to the bass, they also like to target walleyes in Erie. Thats better than in anyones lifetime around here, Melega said. Its as good as its ever going to be.He knows many anglers trolling with downriggers and planer boards are getting their limit within an hour, but they prefer fishing for them like bass fishing.When their sonar picks up on walleye about 38 feet down, he said a Ned rig or dropshot works. If you get down in front of their face, youll catch them every time. Its fun, its easy, Melega said.He recently caught two walleyes that were close to seven pounds each.Another proven technique is fishing with a nightcrawler on a spinner blade harness with a one-ounce sinker. We just sit back and drift, just let the wind drift you and well catch plenty of walleyes doing that, he said.For the spinner blades, he likes gold and chartreuse colors. Youll feel them bite, they tap, tap, tap. You have to let them take it, he said about not setting the hook too soon. More than once weve had all four rods hook up at the same time when you go over a school of walleyes, Melega said.To keep the nightcrawlers fresh, he keeps them near ice. He places a rubber car mat on the boat to keep the dirt from the worms and fish from getting the carpet dirty or slimy.They also wait until getting to shore to filet the fish. They got those nice fish cleaning stations, he said. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission used money from Lake Erie fishing permits for cleaning stations at the marinas for Walnut Creek, Lampe, and North East.Autumn bass tacticsWith cooler weather leading to fall, Melega suggests top water lures in many lakes and rivers. As soon as you get those cool morning and then hot afternoons, itll be time to put your top on water buzz baits and your poppers. CHILLICOTHE Were less than a week away from kicking off a brand new high school football season in the Scioto Valley.Hard to believe, right?Last fall, three area programs Chillicothe, Unioto and Zane Trace managed to punch playoff tickets, while the Shermans and Pioneers picked up postseason victories.Those same three schools will try and repeat that process while the rest of the area attempts to follow their lead.But before that journey begins, weve named 10 players you need to know before a new season begins.Cartae Ligon, ChillicotheNightmare fuel. Thats what Ligon is for each defense that has to try to contain him. He had one of the best seasons in program history last fall, totaling 272 carries for 2,262 yards and 27 touchdowns. Coming into his junior year, hes a bonafide candidate to win Ohios Mr. Football.Frankie Hirsch, HuntingtonThe reigning DVI District co-Offensive POY is preparing for what he hopes to be his best season yet. And thats saying something, considering how special he was last fall. He ended a six-win season with 1,253 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. The Township will be rocking this fall.Isaac Coy, UniotoCoy is the most experienced quarterback in the area and has plenty of wins under his belt coming into his senior year. As a junior, he led the Shermans to an 11-1 mark and a playoff win over Columbus East, throwing for 1,390 yards and 18 touchdowns. Unioto goes as he does.Brice Johnson, Zane TraceCan you imagine being on the other end of a tackle when Johnson is running the football? Hes an absolute bull in a China shop. Last fall, Johnson led his Pioneers to a 9-3 mark, including a playoff win at Lucasville Valley. He rushed for 1,578 yards and 22 touchdowns on 177 carries.AJ Paudicz, WestfallThrough two games last fall, Paudicz had his Mustangs sitting at 2-0. Then, in Week 3, an injury ended his season. Westfall finished 6-4 overall, but you have to wonder how different it wouldve looked had Paudicz stayed healthy. Hes back in the fold in 2026, looking for retribution.Yusef Wilson, UniotoBefore an injury derailed most of his junior season, Wilson played in three games and rushed for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just 12 carries. Now, hes back and word on the street is that hes better than ever. Thats bad news for opponents. Hes due for a breakout year.Blake Brower, Zane TraceIf youre going to try and run the ball, you better do it away from Brower. He made his presence felt in a big way last fall, totaling 81 tackles 14 for a loss and eight sacks. Hes proven himself to be one of the best defensive players in the area. Nothing should change this season.Caleb Johnson, PiketonJohnson will be one of Piketons key returners this fall after enjoying a breakout campaign as a sophomore. He tallied 33 tackles, eight for a loss of yardage, and three sacks while helping the Redstreaks win six games. He has a nose for the football and likes to wreak havoc in backfields.Fisher Schaaf, AdenaSchaaf has made a living off simply being near the football, no matter the situation. Defensively, he leads by example with a ballhawk approach. Hes an interception artist and has made a habit of disrupting passes. And, offensively, hes a weapon. The Warriors will consistently look to him in times of need.Conner Rutherford, ChillicotheOne of the key factors to Chillicothes success in 2025 was its ability to run the ball. Altogether, the Cavaliers averaged 6.6 yards per run play and Rutherford, standing in at 6-foot-6, 280 pounds, played a huge part in making that happen. Colts quarterback Daniel Jones wasnt always able to trust his receivers to get open in Tuesdays joint practice against New England.Even with the Patriots top two cornerbacks, Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis III, standing on the sidelines, there were often times when Jones had to hold the ball and wait for receivers to get open, particularly in the red zone.But he always has Tyler Warren there to save the day. When Jones needed a completion Tuesday, he often looked for the second-year tight end, a bruising, physical force who gave the Patriots secondary trouble all day long. Indianapolis and New England finished Tuesdays joint practice by putting the No. 1 and No. 2 offenses for each team into a critical end-of-game situation 1:12 on the clock, an entire field to drive, in need of a touchdown.Jones beat the blitz by hitting Warren up the seam on his first throw, then picked up a big chunk by finding Warren coming free over the middle and launched a ball deep for Warren in contested coverage. Warren went up, beat the safety and pulled the ball down at the 5-yard line.Josh Downs beat Patriots slot cornerback Marcus Jones to the pylon for a touchdown two plays later.Warren gave New Englands secondary trouble throughout the practice. Jones completed 12 of 20 passes, according to an unofficial count by IndyStar; six went to Warren, who repeatedly fought defenders off his back to make catches with players draped all over him.Last laughDowns was simply happy to be on the field.The teams slot receiver missed both of the teams practices over the weekend due to a minor groin injury, leaving his status for the practice somewhat up in the air.He was healthy and ready to go Tuesday, setting up a good battle with Marcus Jones, a highly regarded nickel who made his reputation during New Englands run to the Super Bowl last season.You never like to miss days and make people get a little worried about whats going on, but the trainers did a good job, Downs said.Downs ended up with five catches of his own in 11-on-11 drills, along with a couple more in 7-on-7. When he made the final play, leaving Marcus Jones behind him with an out cut to the sideline, Downs turned and talked a little trash to his opponent, prompting Marcus Jones to get up into the slot receivers face and start jawing.Referees on the field flagged Downs for taunting, but its not something that should be an issue in the regular season. Downs was simply engaging in a little back-and-forth.Thats my bad, I didnt know the whole situation, Downs said. We had some friendly trash talk going on during practice, that was what that was about. We dapped it up afterward, it was all good.Ground gameThe Indianapolis running game got off to a slow start.The Colts pounded away in the first half of the practice, but the tandem of Jonathan Taylor and Seth McGowan were often met at the line by an aggressive Patriots defense. Taylor, in particular, was bottled up in the first few 11-on-11 periods, sometimes hit in the backfield before he had a chance to get to the hole.When the practice moved into the red zone after the first special teams period, the Indianapolis running game started to assert itself.Taylor broke free for a touchdown run up the left sideline on the first play of the red-zone period, then followed that with a series of patient runs to pick up big yardage, one of his trademarks.McGowan put his power on display, burrowing through the middle for a handful of big gains, and Ulysses Bentley IVscored a touchdown of his own with the No. 2 offense, breaking through a slow-developing hole on the right side and running away for a touchdown to the right.Backup battleRiley Leonard appeared to get a little more work than Anthony Richardson, perhaps because Richardson will start Thursday nights preseason game against the Patriots and play the entire first half.Leonard started off hot. After taking a sack on his first play, Leonard completed his first nine passes in 11-pn-11 drills, firing a lot of short, quick throws.The 2025 sixth-round pick was also given the chance to lead the No. 2 offense in a two-minute drill that was far too choppy. Leonard completed four of his first six passes on the drive, including a gotta have it throw to tight end Will Mallory on third-and-long to get Indianapolis into striking distance.Unfortunately, the No. 2 offense wasnt able to finish the drive the same way. Flagged three times on the drive, including twice for false starts, the Colts put Leonard in a position where he had to take chances, and after an off-balance try for Mallory fell incomplete, Leonard threw late and over the middle, and after the ball was tipped a couple of times, Patriots safety John Saunders picked it off to end the drive and the practice.Richardson completed 5 of 8 passes, and he largely looked decisive, making the most of his snaps. When he got to 7-on-7a drill where he got more repetitions than Leonard Richardson was accurate, including a gorgeous lofted touchdown to Bentley, who continues to make plays in the passing game.Kicking competitionBlake Grupe and Spencer Shrader faced a stiff test Tuesday in the form of a heavy wind that whipped across the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium.Both Colts kickers were given four kicks. Both Grupe and Shrader made three of four kicks, their final offerings from 57 yards at the mercy of the wind. While Grupe started his final kick left, Shraders last offering looked like a solid strike of the ball, only to get to the top of its arc and get blown hard to the left by the wind.Roll callDowns (groin), strong safety Hunter Wohler (hamstring) and veteran wide receiver Laquon Treadwell (hamstring) returned to the field.Cornerback Charvarius Ward, who stayed in Indianapolis to rehabilitate a back injury, did not make the trip. Rookie middle linebacker CJ Allen (hamstring) and running back DJ Giddens (hamstring) remain out of action due to their hamstring injuries.Wide receiver Alec Pierce remains on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from offseason surgery to clean up his ankle. Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard told reporters before the start of the practice that Indianapolis is still planning for Pierce to be ready for the start of the season.Quick hittersMallory is clearly a solid receiving target at tight end. Used mostly as insurance for Warren last season, Mallory is putting together a good camp, and he had four catches in 11-on-11. Rookie wide receiver Deion Burks made a few plays, but he was also upended by Patriots defensive back Karon Prunty. Dalton Tucker took snaps at center again. On the way to clinching his spot in The Chase, Hamlin has won four races, has 13 top fives and 15 top 10s. He's coming into this weekend after running into brake trouble at Iowa. However, he was still able to pull off a fifth-place finish. At this race last season, he started fourth but finished 10th. Bell The Bridesmaid As unbelievable as it sounds, Christopher Bell has finished second in seven races this NASCAR season, including four in the last five races and six of the last 11. And even though he doesn't have a win yet this year, Bob Pockrass placed him at the very top of his latest power rankings. Bell currently sits sixth in the standings and is close to clinching his spot in The Chase. In this race last season, he started eighth and finished 21st.

Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant has undergone knee surgery following a recent training camp injury, significantly shifting his recovery timeline. Bryant is now expected to miss four to six months while recovering from the procedure, according to ESPN. Chicago remains hopeful that the veteran defensive back could return in time for a potential postseason run. The updated timeline comes after initial reports suggested Bryant would avoid surgery. The safety sustained a hyperextended knee, a bone bruise and a small fracture during a one-on-one drill against tight end Cole Kmet during practice on Aug. 3. Bryant was originally projected for a recovery period of eight to 10 weeks, which would have allowed Bryant to return during the regular season. However, the decision to proceed with surgery extended his recovery window. Chicago acquired Bryant during the offseason on a three-year, $40 million contract after winning the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks in 2025. Bryant's extended absence creates additional depth concerns for Chicago's secondary. Backup safety Cam Lewis, who stepped into first-team reps following Bryant's initial injury, was reportedly carted off the field on Aug. 8 after suffering a right ankle or foot injury during training camp drills. With Bryant sidelined and Lewis facing health uncertainty, the Bears will rely more heavily on rookie safety Dillon Thieneman, whom Chicago selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Baltimore Ravens cornerback and 2024 first-round draft pick Nate Wiggins was carted off the field roughly an hour into Tuesdays practice after suffering a left leg injury. Wiggins tangled with rookie wide receiver JaKobi Lane during one-on-one drills and fell to the turf. He appeared unable to put weight on the leg as he entered the team facility. Asked about the potential seriousness of the injury, first-year head coach Jesse Minter said Wiggins was still being evaluated. "Not a whole lot," Minter responded. "I think theres optimism, but again, well look at it, well see where its at. Its one of those plays, really not much between the two guys in the play. So whether it was hitting the ground or whatever it was, well see what it looks like." Wiggins injury comes two practices after two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Zay Flowers left Fridays session with a thigh bruise. Flowers returned to limited action Tuesday after missing Sunday's practice. Wiggins started all 17 games and had three interceptions in his second season in 2025 after the Ravens selected him 30th overall in the 2024 draft out of Clemson. He comes into the season as the starter on the left side and perhaps the teams top cornerback, even in front of four-time Pro Bowler Marlon Humphrey, who has transitioned into a slightly different role. The Ravens made minimal upgrades at the position this offseason despite finishing 2025 tying for the NFLs second-worst pass defense. "I got a lot of confidence in the corner room," Minter said. "I look at Marlon probably at his best couple days the last couple times out here. (Chidobie Awuzie), I mean, this guys played a ton of football, played at a really high level. I think hes had a great camp up to this point. T.J. Tampa has done a lot of great things. Keyon Martin has done a lot of good stuff. Chandler (Rivers) has done a lot of great stuff." Minter also confirmed that quarterback Lamar Jackson and other regulars wont play during Saturday nights home preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, but insisted theres still value in preseason games. "Every year that Ive been associated with the NFL, theres a guy in the first preseason game that you might not have real high expectations for, and then they go out in the game and play at a different level than maybe they practiced," Minter said.
