Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson both received opportunities, but neither group was able to finish the drill cleanly. Sanders drive included multiple pre snap penalties, while Watsons possession also featured mistakes, including a sack, an illegal formation and another false start.The mistakes appeared to push Monken over the edge. The first year Browns head coach has emphasized discipline and avoiding emotional mistakes throughout training camp, but Mondays practice ended with visible frustration. Monken later acknowledged that he became emotionally hijacked by the way the session finished.Ending practice early sent a clear message to the team. With the regular season approaching, the Browns cannot afford repeated penalties and communication issues, particularly on an offense that is still adjusting to a number of new pieces. Clevelands offensive line is undergoing significant changes, making consistency especially important during camp.The quarterback competition between Sanders and Watson also adds another layer of attention to every practice. Watson has received more first-team opportunities, while Sanders continues to compete for the starting job. Monken has said the competition will continue, with each quarterback expected to start one of the Browns first two preseason games before the team makes its decision for Week 1.Although ending practice early may seem unusual, Monkens decision could ultimately serve as a wake-up call. The Browns are trying to establish a new identity, and that starts with eliminating the mistakes that ended Mondays practice on a sour note.

Although the Metsare on a tear since the trade deadline, interim manager Andy Green and the organization are using the last couple of months of the season to evaluate young players to see if they can help the team in 2027.While the bullpen has been remade with arms from the farm system, one notable name that has not made his way back to the Mets is Jonah Tong.The former top prospect has had an up-and-down season in Triple-A. But many believe Tong and the Mets would be better served if the right-hander hones his craft in the majors.Green was asked about Tong ahead of Tuesday's game with the Braves and what he's seen from him."Two starts ago, he was great," Green said. "Fastball shape that we get really excited about. A really good curveball. His changeup was back to being a plus pitch for him. Next outing, his first three innings were great. Was encouraged by what he did. Ran through a weird set of circumstances where three different pitches got hit out of the park, which is pretty rare. He bounced back, had a respectable outing."We know how good he is, want to see him fill up the strike zone, want to see the kind of arsenal that when you look at him, that will get him deep or deeper into a game. He just needs to go out and pitch. Not worry about where he is and go dominate."Tong tossed five scoreless innings two starts ago before he let up five home runs his last time out.Those two starts are indicative of Tong's season. In 19 starts, Tong has pitched toa 5.46 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. He's still striking out a ton of batters, 103 in 85.2 innings, but he's walked more batters this season (49) than last (47) in far fewer innings.Tong did make three appearances for the Mets earlier this season and struggled. He allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits and seven walks in his 10 innings of workBefore his five-home run game, Tong was pitching much better. In July, he pitched to a 3.65 ERA, with three of his five starts allowing two or fewer runs. So what does Green and the Mets need to see for Tong to get the call-up? Is it the metrics, results or both? Green gave his take on the situation."We want to see ingredients that we believe will succeed on the field here," he said. "We want to put him in a place where he can be successful when he comes back. Its always hard in the major leagues. We think he has the stuff to pitch here. We want to see more stuff on the backside where we feel that can play. When we feel that way, well be excited when he comes."Green confirmed that Robert Stock will make his next start through the rotation, so Tong's next start is likely in Triple-A. But if Stock struggles again and Tong shows improvement and consistency, the next turn through the rotation could see a new face."I think we want to see ingredients that we believe will succeed on the field here. Can the Lions top the division and return to the postseason after missing out last year? FOX Sports' Colin Cowherd thinks so. On Tuesday's edition of The Herd, Cowherd predicted his top two teams for each division heading into the 2026 NFL season and he offered a bold perspective for the NFC North. "In the NFC NorthLions, Bears is how I see it." Cowherd explained during his broadcast on Fox Sports Radio, highlighting Detroit as the team to beat in the black and blue division. "Lions have the best roster," Cowherd said. "They upgraded at OC," referring to the recently hired former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing as the new offensive coordinator in Detroit. Cowherd also pointed to their previous campaign as proof of their ceiling under tough circumstances. "They won nine last year with a brutal schedule and a truckload of injuries." With high expectations for their postseason trajectory, Cowherd stated, "I think Detroit could win the Super Bowl." The overall talent level on the Lions stood out to Cowherd across every major position group on the field. "Their skill positions: Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPortathey are stacked." He also praised the front office for maintaining strong investments along the offensive line to protect Jared Goff. Not only did Sewell receive a long-term extension two offseasons ago, but now they also added another tackle after drafting Clemson's Blake Miller with the No. 17 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft. "Penei Sewell is one of the best tackles in football. They addressed the other tackle during the draft." Cowherd said, referring to 2026 first-round pick Blake Miller. "You know I love Goff. I think this roster is top three in the NFL. I'm going to take them to win the division." Cowherd wasn't done there, as he also expects the Chicago Bears to remain competitive after making the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Not only did they make the playoffs, but they won a playoff game for the first time since 2010. "The Bears' first year with Ben Johnson, creating a culture and cleaning up a mess, made the playoffs," Cowherd said. Cowherd sees steady growth coming for quarterback Caleb Williams alongside a talented surrounding offensive unit full of playmakers. After trading D.J. Moore to the Buffaloe Bills, the Bears head into this season with pass catchers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III alongside tight end Colston Loveland. "I think Caleb Williams will be more accurate," Cowherd said. "He's a young kid. He's getting better, and I love their tight end, receiver, running back group." Reflecting on Chicago's foundation, Cowherd concluded, "Don't like it, [I] love it."

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Trey Yesavage has undergone surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. The Blue Jays announced the news on Tuesday. The surgery isnt necessarily season-ending. Manager John Schneider told reporters that Yesavage is considered week-to-week, leaving the door open for his return this season if medically cleared and Toronto remains in the postseason mix. Yesavage last pitched on August 4 against the Houston Astros. His knee appeared to buckle during his warmup prior to the third inning, and he was removed from the game after speaking with medical trainers. Yesavage has had a strong first full MLB seasonYesavage was initially called up for his MLB debut late in 2025 and was a sensation during Torontos run to last seasons World Series. Yesavage pitched 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball in his postseason debut in an ALDS win over the New York Yankees, and he allowed two runs or fewer in four of his five postseason starts. Hes followed up that debut with a successful first season as a full-time MLB starter. In 93 2/3 innings pitched, Yesavage has a 3.65 ERA and 1.142 WHIP with 91 strikeouts and 46 walks as the No. 2 starter behind All-Star Dylan Cease. Can Blue Jays still compete for playoffs?The Blue Jays conducted a mix of buying and selling at the trade deadline, dealing the expiring contracts of outfielder Daulton Varsho and pitcher Kevin Gausman while acquiring pitchers Jos Soriano, Jameson Taillon and Spencer Arrighetti, among other deals.Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, Taillon (right forearm tendinitis) and Arrighetti (foot) are both on the injured list. The Blue Jays placed Taillon on the inured list Tuesday, a day after he left his Blue Jays debut after four innings. Its been a disappointing season for the Blue Jays coming off of their AL championship last season. They enter play on Tuesday in last place in the AL East at 57-63. But theyre still reasonably in the wild-card hunt, 3.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the AL. Where they stand if and when Yesavage is cleared to pitch this season would likely play a significant role in Torontos decision whether or not to bring him back.

While David Montgomery might be known for his red-zone rushing ability and consistent play of punching it in the end zone, the Houston Texans' starting running back has made plays as a receiver throughout his playing career.Last season, Montgomery caught 24 passes for 190 yards as a member of the Detroit Lions. Since entering the league in 2019, he's averaged at least 32 catches per season and 270 receiving yards. On Tuesday, the Texans got a glimpse of what the offense could look like should Montgomery add a second gear toward the passing attack. As the Texans ran a fake scrimmage ahead of Thursday's preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, C.J. Stroud hit Montgomery on a wheel route pass for an 80-yard touchdown, marking it as the biggest play of training camp thus far. Stroud connected with Montgomery on a nice pass to the outside about 10 yards downfield, but it was the running back who did most of the work in space. "He can spark an offense. (WTWO/WAWV) When people hear Tommy John, they immediately think of the surgery pitchers in baseball have to repair a ligament in their elbow, but the man it is named for, a Terre Haute native who has recently entered hospice care, is accepting his fate as he pens a letter to his fans.Recently, Terre Haute native and former MLB pitcher Tommy John thanked the New York Yankees and the fans who cheered him on over his career as he enters hospice care. Bruce Rosselli, a part-owner and general manager for the Terre Haute Rex, who has hosted a Tommy John night in the past to honor his legacy and impact on the game, and a friend of Tommy John, was shocked to hear the news of Tommy John's health."I was saddened to hear that," Rosselli said. "The last few weeks, I've been speaking with him, encouraging him and letting him know Terre Haute is behind him, the Terre Haute Rex are playing for him. Things like that to encourage him."Tommy John played 26 seasons in the MLB with six different teams and recorded over 2,000 strikeouts while collecting nearly 300 wins as a pitcher."In the modern era of the 1960s, 70s, he was all over the map with Major League Baseball, getting drafted in 1961," Rosselli said.In today's day and age, however, when people hear Tommy John, they think of the surgery named after him instead of the player himself. Rosselli had Tommy John speak to his teams many times to help make sure as many players hear his story and know the person behind the name."We had pitchers get up with their scar from their Tommy John and was taking pictures with Tommy," Rosselli said. "They just thought it was the greatest thing to have, their elbow match his elbow."Even though Tommy John has limited time left on Earth, people wouldn't know that by his attitude.I spoke to him; he was a little bit more talkative. He couldn't talk very loudly; he was still joking, this this guy has always full of jokes," Rosselli said. "When we talked about the Rex and we're going into the championship round, he's like, hey, go out and get them."The baseball field he grew up playing on in Terre Haute is named after him, but more recognition would be on the way in the form of a statue."My last words hearing from Tommy last night when I asked him, what do you want on the statue? Which team? And he whispered, he cannot speak very loud, was pinstripes," Rosselli said. "It's going to be a life-size pitching motion of Tommy and the pinstripes. It will live on longer seeing a statue than just hearing about or reading it about it as a name."A man whose career took him all over the United States will always remember where he came from."One of the things he always quotes that his dad told him," Rosselli said. "That you will always be Tommy John, no matter whether you go to the big leagues or not. But it brought fierce criticism from L'Equipe channel presenter France Pierron, who labelled a father "completely useless" at the time of their child's birth.L'Equipe later apologised and said Pierron's comments were "very far removed" from its values.
