The 2025 Dallas Cowboys were so terrible on defense, improvement could be measured just by them being competent in communicating and lining up correctly on a regular basis. But Super Bowl aspirations are the way of life for a franchise that is starved for postseason success, and more must be gleaned than incremental steps forward. Jumps must be made by the defensive roster. Beyond their two biggest defensive studs, rookie Caleb Downs and DT Quinnen Willims, the Cowboys have three players whose stock has clearly skyrocketed through the first two weeks of camp. All three were considered a question mark to begin camp, but now could be clear starters in 2026 to which no one would blink an eye.Edge Rashan GaryWhen Rashan Gary was traded for, most hoped he was one depth piece of a multitude of edge rushers. Gary would be the run stopper who left the field on pass rush downs after ending the 2025 season without making many impact plays in the final nine games. In camp, he has not only made plays against the best offensive linemen on the team but also been a Dak Prescott-type leader for the defensive side of the football. His effort has been infectious.CB Cobie DurantCobie Durant was the guy the Los Angeles Rams wanted to upgrade from. Dallas signed him to a one-year, $5 million contract, and he was a veteran depth piece who made plays in big games. He has played possibly the best corner anyone has on the team. Whether its outside or in the slot, Durant has cemented himself as a starter at cornerback. If it wasnt for Durant, Shavon Revel Jr. likely makes this list and starts across from DaRon Bland.LB Jaishawn BarhamDallas spent a third-round pick on Jaishawn Barham partly because head coach Brian Schottenheimer felt like he was the player hed be disappointed if he didnt end up with on the team. He had the look, and people around him said he was soaking up all the info he could. Still he is a rookie, moving back to linebacker. Nobody assumed he would be possibly the best defender in camp. Barham didnt just blow up runs or blitz well, but he is also breaking up passes. The look, the mentality, and now the on-field impact. The veteran guard acknowledged the noise surrounding the Fever but delivered a clear message about where the players stand.I think theres just been a lot of outside noise, Cunningham said. But our locker room is good. And thats what it is to be an Indiana Fever.That statement arrived as Cunningham and her teammates continued to face scrutiny from multiple directions. Cunningham has drawn criticism for controversial comments about transgender athletes. The Fever also became the center of another heated WNBA conversation after Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington struck Cunningham in the head during a fast break Saturday.Officials assessed Carrington a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected her late in the first quarter. The play produced intense debate among fans and analysts, while Fever coach Stephanie White publicly pushed back against some of the online commentary surrounding the incident. Through it all, Cunningham insists Indiana has remained together.Fever answer outside noise with consecutive winsIt is impossible to know every detail about a teams internal relationships from the outside. On the court, however, the Fever have looked united.Indiana defeated Chicago 90-86 after the incident involving Cunningham, then returned home Tuesday and delivered one of its strongest offensive performances of the season in a 106-92 victory over the New York Liberty.The back-to-back wins improved Indiana to 21-12 and kept the Fever firmly in the race for one of the WNBAs top playoff seeds.Cunningham also produced an encouraging response after three quiet offensive performances. She scored 12 points against New York and made four of her five attempts from beyond the arc.Her contributions were part of a balanced Indiana effort.Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting, extending her streak of games with at least 20 points to 17. Caitlin Clark recorded 22 points and 10 assists, while Aliyah Boston added 19 points and seven rebounds.The Fever had four starters score in double figures and repeatedly found the open player against the Libertys defense. That does not eliminate the controversies surrounding the team. It does support Cunninghams assertion that Indiana has not allowed them to become an obvious on-court distraction.Sophie Cunningham embraces Fever cultureCunninghams reference to what it means to be an Indiana Fever was brief, but it carried significance. Indiana has dealt with enormous attention since Clark entered the WNBA. Every loss, hard foul, coaching decision and public comment can become a national discussion.That environment places pressure on everyone in the organization, not only Clark. Cunningham has emerged as one of the teams most outspoken players. Her willingness to defend teammates and speak candidly has made her popular with many Fever fans, but it also has made her a frequent target for criticism.The Fever do not need every player to agree on every issue to maintain a functional locker room. They do need trust, communication and a shared commitment to winning. Cunningham believes those elements remain intact.Indianas recent results have strengthened that message. Road trips can test a teams chemistry, especially when outside attention follows it everywhere. They also can strengthen a group entering the most important portion of the season.The Fever still will be discussed, debated and scrutinized regardless of what happens next. Cunninghams message suggests the players understand that reality. Asher Opoku-Fordjour made his senior England debut in 2024 [Getty Images]England boss Steve Borthwick has shaken up his centrally contracted squad with just over a year to go until the Rugby World Cup.Borthwick has announced the 25 players who will receive enhanced player contracts, worth around 150,000, for the 2026-27 season.Handed an elite deal for the first time are prop Asher Opoku-Fordjour, lock Alex Coles, flanker Guy Pepper, scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet and centre Seb Atkinson.Flanker Ben Curry, versatile back Elliot Daly, centre Ollie Lawrence and wing Tom Roebuck all miss out on contracts, while France-bound number eight Tom Willis is no longer eligible for England selection.Curry and Daly have both been hit by long injury lay-offs over the past year, while Roebuck and Lawrence have fallen out of favour after previously being mainstays of the side.Willis was handed an enhanced contract this time last year after cementing his place in the England set-up at the start of 2025, but he has not played for his country since agreeing a shock move to Bordeaux for next season.The enhanced contracts were introduced in 2024 as part of the new Professional Game Partnership between the Rugby Football Union and the Prem clubs.It gives Borthwick the final say over medical and conditioning matters, with the 25 players all receiving a fixed amount of money from the RFU, as opposed to a game-by-game match fee.It is understood the current match fee is around 21,000 per game for non centrally-contracted players, while the enhanced squad players still receive an extra 7,000 per game for image rights, on top of their fixed annual amount.The RFU says the contracts "help ensure the best possible preparation for the England Men's team", but the new system has not been without teething problems, for example when Exeter and England clashed over the treatment of star wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso's shoulder injury in late 2024 and early 2025.After a long winning run in 2025, England flopped in the Six Nations earlier this year, winning just one match, but recovered to win two out of their three Nations Championship games in July.Borthwick's side host Australia, Japan and New Zealand this November in the northern hemisphere leg of the inaugural tournament.Listen: Sport's Strangest Crimes - BloodgateListen to the latest Rugby Union Weekly podcast

When The Masters rolls around next year, we will have no major winners under the age of 30 in the sport. First, Matt Fitzpatrick won the Valspar Championship and the RBC Heritage, and then he helped his brother, Alex, earn a PGA Tour card by winning the Zurich Classic alongside him. But Alex wasnt just there to take part on the PGA Tour.Many thought Alex had only made it to the PGA Tour thanks to his brothers excellence at the Zurich, but he immediately proved that he belonged at the top level. He finished in the top 10 in his next two events, making for a total of five PGA Tour top 10s on the season.He achieved this with laser-accurate iron play. In fact, Alex Fitzpatrick was so good with his irons that he led the entire PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach during the regular season. As a rookie!He was better than even world number one Scottie Scheffler, whose major strength is usually his approach play. Gaining 0.91 strokes on approach, he was 0.05 strokes better than Collin Morikawa, and 0.1 strokes better than the third best approach player, his brother Matt.Before the 2026 season began, Alex Fitzpatrick could not have dreamed of having this type of year.
