With there only being three games in the preseason, weve seen how NFL teams have varied reps for starters. Some teams are more concerned with protecting their health, but other teams have more competition for starting roles and the potential starters see a greater amount of reps.Since were less concerned about the defense, this weeks Reacts poll asked fans how long they wanted the Browns offensive starters to play in the first preseason game. 46% of fans voted for the first quarter, 40% of fans said the first half, and 14% of fans think they should play into the second half.Head coach Todd Monken talked about how much he expected to play starters during his press conferences this week, although he was a little mixed on his messaging. This is what Monken said about playing time this past Monday, when asked about it:Id like to get our starters out there for the first series together. I would like that to happen. Thats all pending, medical, where guys are at because were not going to put anybody at risk, so thats also subject to change. I would like our starters to take the field together for the first time, and then well see. If were going to evaluate the quarterbacks, weve got to make sure we can protect them, weve got to play the guys up front. We want to evaluate the quarterbacks as best as we can, irrespective of who else is in the game, weve got to evaluate the quarterbacks on how theyre able to function and score points.Then, on Wednesday, when talking about the quarterbacks specifically, he said he wanted them each to play about a half each. As we learned a few days ago, Deshaun Watson will play the first half against the Bears, while Shedeur Sanders will begin the third quarter.Ones going to start this week and ones going to start next week, and were going to play them about a half each. Id like to see a quarterback play a half and get a two-minute, were going to do everything we can to get a two-minute and for the half, and were going to try to do the exact same thing the next week.The Browns are still heavy underdogs to make the postseason, at 64/1 compared to the other teams, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Thats pretty good. The final score was 16-14, but the team was up 10-0 when Joe Flacco exited the game, which is a nice sign.Heres what we learned: The offense is going to be more conservativeYes, preseason offenses tend to be vanilla. But even by those standards, the Bengals looked significantly different. Joe Burrow was playing under center more, handing it off more than were used to seeing, and checking it down quite a bit. This approach aligns with what weve seen in camp and gathered about what Dan Pitcher wants to do on offense. And thats a good thing, as it should help protect Burrow better. The defense has more confidence but isnt shutdownFrom the start of the game, we saw Bengals defenders swarming to the ball, getting in the faces of ball carriers, and generally playing as more of a cohesive unit than weve seen in the past couple of years. However, there were a lot of long gains along the sideline and runs down the middle. Hopefully, by mid-season, their communication will catch up with their talent, and theyll be able to reduce the number of big plays they give up. Only two QBs will make the rosterBurrow looked tentative, but thats to be expected, considering his injuries and slow starts. Flaccos arm looked just as lively as it did last year (even though his legs are very clearly those of a 41-year-old player).But Josh Johnson did not really give Cincinnati a good reason he should make the roster. He was strip sacked on third down in the red zone and did not show he can complete difficult throws. Johnson is 40 years old, so his ability and ceiling are clear to the Bengals front office. And it doesnt seem like Sean Clifford or a younger QB is going to catch anyone off guard this preseason, so itll probably be just Burrow and Flacco that make the team.
