SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFernando Mendoza likely to get some 1st-team repsLAS VEGAS, NEVADA - AUGUST 13: Fernando Mendoza #15 of the Las Vegas Raiders leaves the field after the team's 27-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in a preseason game at Allegiant Stadium on August 13, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThursday night, after his preseason debut, Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak called No. 1 overall pick, quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, an ascending player.Friday morning, Kubiak said the coaching staff is working on a plan to get Mendoza more practice reps with the first-team offense. He did note that its important that all of the teams quarterbacks get work with the first team. But its clear, Kubiak thinks Mendoza is ready for more challenges. It will be interesting to see if Mendoza gets first-team work against Houstons strong defense in a joint practice Tuesday and in the preseason game Thursday.Mendoza played from late in the first quarter to early in the fourth quarter in a 27-14 home loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He did not play with most starters. After watching the film, Kubiak praised Mendoza for his poise and game approach.Mendoza was 10 of 16 for 97 yards with a touchdown pass and one sack. he wasnt perfect, but there were some highlights for sure. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPatriots 53-man roster prediction after first preseason gameThe New England Patriots kicked off the preseason with a head-to-head clash with the Indianapolis Colts. Both teams met for a joint training camp practice before the exhibition matchup. With the starters getting significant work during the team periods, they were held out of Thursday night's game. Their absence provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to evaluate the current depth on the roster. One game isn't going to tell the full story, but it is a massive step toward the eventual roster cutdown date. Who stays and who goes for the Patriots? If the season started today, here's what my 53-man roster would look like: Quarterback (3)Drake MayeTommy DeVitoBehren MortonThe situation is straightforward at quarterback. Drake Maye is the starter, Tommy DeVito is the backup and Behren Morton is the developmental project. Running back (3)Rhamondre StevensonTreVeyon HendersonJam MillerWith Terrell Jennings on injured reserve, the No. 3 role is going to come down between rookie Jam Miller and second-year running back Lan Larison. Although Larison saw plenty of action in the opener, particularly in the passing game, Miller had 14 carries for 55 yards, in comparison to Larison's seven carries for one yard. Wide receiver (7)A.J. BrownRomeo DoubsDeMario DouglasKayshon BoutteMack HollinsEfton Chism IIIKyle WilliamsUnder different circumstances, Patriots rookie Cameron Dorner could make the wide receiver competition interesting on the backend. But as of right now, the Patriots seem pretty locked in on keeping all seven of their top receivers. Tight end/fullback (4)Hunter HenryEli RaridonTanner ArkinReggie Gilliam (FB)Hunter Henry signed a two-year extension this week, and Eli Raridon is a rookie third-round draft pick. Tanner Arkin fills the blocking needs, and Reggie Gilliam is one of the best fullbacks in the NFL. Offensive line (9)Will CampbellAlijah Vera-TuckerJared WilsonMike OnwenuMorgan MosesCaleb LomuMarcus BryantBen BrownJames HudsonThere are some serious interior depth concerns for the Patriots. Both Ben Brown and Andrew Rupcich went down with injuries in Thursday's preseason game. This listing could shake out differently if Brown misses significant time. James Hudson got the final spot on the offensive line due to his ability to swing to both the tackle and guard positions. That kind of versatility really matters when the depth is in question. Defensive line (5)Milton WilliamsChristian BarmoreCory DurdenJoshua FarmerEric GregoryMilton Williams and Christian Barmore are the top defensive enforcers, with Cory Durden stepping up as a starting nose tackle. The team is hoping to see more growth from 2025 fourth-round draft pick Joshua Farmer as well. Linebacker (4)Robert SpillaneChristian EllissChad MumaKhalil JacobsThe progress shown by rookie linebacker Khalil Jacobs in such a short time has been impressive. Chad Muma has seemingly been positioned as the No. 3 option behind Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss at practices. That means rookie Namdi Obiazor could be the odd man out. EDGE (5)Harold Landry IIIDre'Mont JonesElijah PonderGabe JacasBradyn SwinsonEdge rusher is one of the more concerning positions on the roster given the uncertainty surrounding Harold Landry's health. Dre'Mont Jones and Elijah Ponder have been big contributors, and Bradyn Swinson has clearly matured in his second year. Meanwhile, rookie Gabe Jacas is a powerful defender with exceptionally high upside. Cornerback (6)Christian GonzalezCarlton Davis IIIMarcus JonesCharles WoodsKaron PruntyChanning CanadaThe Patriots have one of the best cornerback trios in all of football with Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III and Marcus Jones. Charles Woods is a solid veteran option for the No. 4 role. The team has also had impressive contributions from rookies Karon Prunty and Channing Canada. Safety (4)Kevin ByardCraig WoodsonDell PettusBrenden SchoolerCraig Woodson was already an ascending safety, but then the Patriots added Kevin Byard, a legitimate All-Pro defensive back who led the NFL in interceptions last season. Of course, Brenden Schooler, the all-world special teams player, made the cut. Every defensive backfield also needs an everyday, lunchpail-toting hammer like Dell Pettus on the roster. Specialists (3)K Andy BorregalesP Bryce BaringerLS Julian AshbyKicker Andy Borregales missed three field goals in the preseason opener. He'll have to clean that up if he hopes to earn a spot on the roster. Punter Bryce Baringer was one of the best players in Thursday's exhibition game. His punts consistently pinned the Colts with bad field position. Long snapper Julian Ashby's roster status will ultimately depend on his health. The team has recently been using Niko Lalos at the position. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDrew Allar jerseys flying off Steelers' shelves after dazzling NFL debutIt didn't take long for Pittsburgh Steelers fans to buy in on rookie quarterback Drew Allar, literally and figuratively. The Steelers Pro Shop announced Friday it restocked Allar jerseys after selling out the night of his impressive NFL preseason debut against the Green Bay Packers.Allar, a third-round pick out of Penn State, completed 10 of his 13 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. The 22-year-old ran for another score and played much more efficiently than he did at State College, where he flashed but never truly met his immense recruiting hype.Still, it seems a bit premature for Steelers fans to be investing all their hope into Allar. The rookie is fourth on the depth chart behind Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. Rudolph and Howard both played above Allar on Thursday, with Rudolph -- who's started 14 games for the Steelers -- completing 10 of his 11 passes for 93 yards. There doesn't seem to be a clear pathway to immediate playing time for Allar, as the Steelers are in win-now mode with the 42-year-old Rodgers playing his final season. Perhaps Pittsburgh builds around Allar next year, but that's a big assumption to make before a single snap of the 2026 regular season.Drew Allar SHINES in His Steelers Preseason Debut vs. Green Bay 10/13, 153 PYDS, 2 PTD, 1 Rushing TD pic.twitter.com/j3Zmx8dsUV Football Performances (@NFLPerformances) August 14, 2026Nevertheless, Steelers fans are clearly excited about their young quarterback. It's hard to blame them as Pittsburgh has cycled through veterans like Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Rodgers to little recent success. Allar has two more preseason games to build on the hype he created Thursday night. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Drew Allar jerseys flying off Steelers' shelves after dazzling NFL debut0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 139 Views 0 previzualizare -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCam Ward struggled against 49ers' backup D, but Titans don't sound worried about itCam Wards rookie season was, on the whole, bad. You didnt hear much about that for some reason. Last years No. 1 overall pick got a pass for the most part. Everyone decided to point out the highlights and focus on the terrible situation the Tennessee Titans put him in, which was valid. This offseason brought a much better environment, with new head coach Robert Saleh, new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and some new talent on the roster. But in Thursdays preseason opener, the results didnt look much different. The Titans played starters in their first preseason game while the San Francisco 49ers sat just about everyone of note. Ward helped lead a touchdown drive to start the game but struggled with accuracy. He went 5 of 12 for 57 yards. He almost threw an interception across the middle but it was dropped. It might not have been a big deal it was just a few drives in a preseason opener while running a new offense, after all but it happening against the 49ers backups isnt great. Especially after Wards rookie struggles. Saleh said he wasnt worried. However, it wasnt the outing that will make Titans fans feel confident heading into an important season. Cam Ward had a rough outing against the 49ers in the Titans' first preseason game. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)Thearon W. Henderson via Getty ImagesRobert Saleh unconcerned about Cam WardWard looked indecisive at times and was inaccurate on other throws. The hesitation could be him getting his first game snaps in Dabolls scheme. He held the ball too long on a few throws, including one in which he took an intentional grounding penalty as he was about to be sacked. The inaccuracy could also be attributed to new plays and new teammates. Saleh didnt sound concerned. "There's no doubt Cam is capable," Saleh said. "We've just got to go execute. Saleh said Ward needs more playing time and the first-team offense might get the whole first half in Tennessees next preseason game, via the Tennessean. "He was making the right decisions, and he was throwing the ball where it needed to be thrown, Saleh said, via the Tennessean. But, again, it comes back to time on task, trusting yourself and trusting your teammates."Get your feet in the ground and throw an accurate football. It's that simple. It sounds simple, but at the same time, we've got to be able to go do it and take it from practice to the game."Perhaps all Ward needs is a little more time. Limited reps in the preseason isnt the best gauge of any players true self, on the good side or the bad. Its just a little scary considering Ward had a long way to go after last season. Ward coming off a poor rookie seasonLast season, Ward and the Titans passing game ranked near the bottom of the NFL in most passing metrics. Included in that, they were were 31st in passing EPA per play and 31st in passing success rate, ahead of only the Browns. That wasnt all Wards fault. The Titans put him in a bad situation, starting with retaining coach Brian Callahan for another season even though he wasnt the answer. And Ward did have some marvelous plays in which he made it clear why he was the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL Draft. Perhaps we get to the regular season, Ward plays well and a few uneven drives in the preseason opener are a distant memory. Overreaction to anything that happens in the preseason is a staple of August football, and a lot of it doesnt translate to the regular season. But the stakes are high for Ward and the Titans this season. If he struggles like he did last season, with a new coaching staff and upgraded teammates, there will be real concern going into next offseason. Especially with the Titans opening a new stadium in 2027. The rest of the preseason might not get us closer to that answer on Ward, but some better results would quell some concerns before the regular season starts.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 139 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat were hearing about Lionel Messi playing vs Nashville SC, rumors, reportsThe next chapter in a budding rivalry will be written on Aug. 15 as MLS leader Nashville SC hosts second-place Inter Miami and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi. The two sides have squared off six times in the past year across all competitions, and with Miami sitting two points behind Nashville in the race for the MLS Supporters' Shield, the stakes could scarcely get higher."When two teams that are at the top of the table face each other, it's such an important game for both of us," NSC's Cristian Espinoza said. "I think the team who can manage the game better will go out with the three points."Obviously it's always special to play against Messi, but as a professional player, we have to put that aside and try to focus on your job. It's really, really special to play against him, but we're going to do our best to win the game."In 12 career appearances against NSC, Messi has tortured Nashville to the tune of 16 goals and four assists. Doubt had been cast over Messi's status against Nashville after the death of his father, Jorge, on Aug. 8, but the Argentinean talisman is expected to take the field at Geodis Park.More: Locals see Premier League's Liverpool and Sunderland put on a show | EstesIs Messi playing vs Nashville SC?After scoring a pair of goals in Miami's Leagues Cup opener against San Luis, Messi missed the following cup match against Monterrey on Aug. 8, following the news of his father's death. Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos didn't put a timetable on Messi's return to action, but his absence from the field proved to be short-lived.Messi returned to the United States this week and featured on the bench as Miami faced Len in the Leagues Cup on Aug. 12, subbing on for the final 45 minutes. Like Nashville, Miami was eliminated from the Leagues Cup, with full focus now going to a race with NSC for first in the table. How Nashville SC plans to stop Messi, Inter MiamiWhile Messi provides a constant threat in front of goal, he's far from the only weapon Nashville will have to contend with on the field. Since its previous meeting with NSC, Miami has bolstered its midfield in the form of Casemiro, who's furthered the South Florida side's ability to break opposing defenses from deep-lying positions."When you play against Miami, it's a big collective effort," NSC coach BJ Callaghan said. "Obviously it's a really talented team with special players and for us it's always about being collectively compact, hard to play through. But at the same time, I think there's opportunities when we have the ball, that we can be good and dangerous as well."As much as NSC hopes to make Messi an afterthought, there's no denying the rarefied air that surrounds him, and the impact his emotional return to the field will have for Miami."When you match up two really good teams, there are a lot of different factors that go into the match," Callaghan said. "There's going to be your tactical game plan. There's going to be your technical execution. There's going to be the physical component to being able to play. And lastly, there has to be an emotional connection to the game."The game is an emotional game, but you have to keep it in check. It has to be used as a positive . . . you have to be able to match those in big games. And we know Saturday night will be no different."Harrison Campbellcan be reached athcampbell@usatodayco.comand follow him on X (formerly Twitter)@hccamp.This article originally appeared on Nashville Tennessean: What were hearing about Lionel Messi playing vs Nashville SC, rumors, reports0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 141 Views 0 previzualizare -
