A new event aims to make niche sports like korfball and ultimate frisbee more popular across Cincinnati.The Cincinnati Regional Sports Commission, which is backing the Rec Fest Cincinnati, says the event could also open the door to bring niche world championships to the city.Kyle Reiser, who runs a group called Queen City Korfball, said his organization and 15 other niche sports teams are working together to organize the event, which will take place at Downtown's Sawyer Point park on Sept. 27, noon to 6 p.m. "We kind of got our brains together and decided ... to showcase the wonder of the niche sports community here," he said. "We have so many, and we're so bountiful."Each sport will have a designated area at Sawyer Point where visitors can learn about the sport and sign up for local teams, including Cincinnati Ultimate, Cincinnati Gladiators Handball Club and Skate Downtown Cincinnati."It's kind of this walking big stadium where you get a chance to jump in and jump out of different sports and try it alongside the teams that are actively recruiting players," he said.Niche sports are 'where we go in the future'The Cincinnati Regional Sports Commission works with Visit Cincy, the city's visitors' bureau, to attract sports events that benefit Cincinnati's economy. The commission has received Hamilton County and city financial backing.Ben Huffman, executive director of the commission, said niche sports have the potential to bring millions of dollars into Greater Cincinnati. He said Warren County saw a "multimillion dollar impact" when it hosted the World Flying Disc Federation's World Ultimate Club Championships in 2018 and 2022. The 2018 event had a $10 million economic impact on the county, The Enquirer reported.Huffman told The Enquirer the commission is vying for Cincinnati to host the Men's Rugby World Cup in 2031.As niche sports participation grows across the city, there's an opportunity to bring large events to Cincinnati, he said, and it's "where we go in the future.""A lot of these events have national, international, regional championships that thousands of people come to compete in," Huffman said. "(Even if) the sport isn't directly on ESPN on a Friday night, there are a lot of people participating."What sports will be at the event?Rec Fest Cincinnati will showcase 16 sports, according to the event posting on Facebook. Some lesser-known sports include:Team handball: In this sport, two teams of seven try to pass and throw a ball into the opposing team's goal.Korfball: In this sport, which is similar to basketball, teams try to throw a ball into a netless basket on an almost 12-foot pole. The teams are made up of eight players four men and four women and players only guard players of the same sex.Gaelic football: This is a traditional Irish sport where two teams of 15 players work together to kick or punch a ball through or over the opposing team's goal. Players can only take four steps before they have to bounce the ball.Orienteering: In orienteering, competitors try to navigate an unfamiliar terrain using a detailed map. Broomball: Broomball is often played on an ice hockey rink, and players try to hit a ball into an opposing net using specially designed brooms.Other sports at the event include tennis, pickleball, rugby, Australian football, fishing, ultimate frisbee, disc golf, women's football, e-sports, roller skating and cricket.The event will also include food trucks and music. Coach Bo Barton also set a milestone in the victory with his 200th career coaching win.Thats been great for the school. This atmosphere has changed, Barton said regarding his teams recent success. We went from being everybodys homecoming to being a team that everybody respects and worries about when they get ready to play us.Things have changed for River Oaks since last falls championship. The program graduated a large portion of its team and currently rosters seven seniors.It didnt take long for those seniors to make an impact against Tallulah. Byron Price and junior Andrew Robinson started off the scoring in the first as Price broke coverage and sprinted down the middle for a long touchdown. Robinson then pitched the ball to senior Conner Hayman in the third as he found daylight for the first of his two scores.I feel good (about my performance), but Ive got to do more and got to keep putting in the work, Hayman said. Weve got to put this game past us. Were going to keep grinding.Bagwell stood out among the Mustangs top players and made an impact on both sides of the ball. He set the tone on the first play of the Tallulah game with a tackle and later broke free for a long touchdown run in the third quarter.Many of Bagwells former Sterlington teammates supported him in the stands and took a group picture postgame.It means so much. These are my guys, Bagwell said on the support. Everybody over here is my family. They took me in as a freshman at Sterlington, so Ill never forget about them.As he only played defense at Sterlington, Bagwell is adjusting to being a two-way player at River Oaks. He totaled 77 tackles (10 TFLs) last fall for the Panthers.Its really the stamina and having to get my endurance right, Bagwell said on the adjustments. Ive never really been running the ball down the field and then have to come back and play defense. (Ive) been getting some extra running in at practice and working out and then hydrating. Thats all that is. But I will do whatever I can to help my team win.Bags, hes a really special guy," Hayman said. "Hes a killer on the field, especially on defense. I enjoy watching and playing with him... He's an athlete, so he's going to get after it. He just does what the coaches tell him, and they just put him in the best position possible.River Oaks' contest against Tallulah wasn't perfect by any means. The Mustangs dropped passes during the game, and the Trojans scored on the final play after being down 28-0 after the third quarter.Blocking is one of the biggest areas River Oaks aims to improve on moving forward. The team felt good about what it accomplished in its opener as it battled through hot weather."(We've) got to keep putting in the work, keep going to practice, having each other's back, definitely picking each other up," Hayman said. "We've just got to keep gelling this thing together. BELLVILLE The Clear Fork Colts had the 2026 season circled since this years senior group first stepped on a varsity soccer field four years ago.On Friday, Aug. 14, the Colts got off to the start they wanted with a 7-1 victory over the Madison Rams on Friday Night Futbol.TOP TALENT: Top 10 Richland County boys soccer players for 2026 | Jake's ListThe Colts got two goals and an assist from Kabuto Setser while Finn McAuley and Kade Beachy had one goal and one assist apiece, AJ Sendal, Owen Weikle and Barrett Walter had one goal apiece and Jonny Annis added an assist.We have been preparing for Madison all summer, Setser said. We knew they are a formidable opponent. In the second half, we made sure to keep our composure and play our game. It feels great to kick the season off with a win like this.Clear Fork held a 3-0 lead at the half as Madison was just a few inches away from a 3-2 game after clanking two off the post. The Rams struck first in the second half off an Easton Grant penalty kick, but Clear Fork answered with four unanswered goals to close out the game when they finally got back to what made them successful in the first place.We had that conversation at halftime because that wasnt the team we had seen all summer, Clear Fork coach Nate Gailey said. We were playing a different pace than what our style calls for. We want to possess and pass the ball around and we were settling for shots outside of the 18 and got back and forth. We did a better job of playing our game in the second half.Madison (0-1) entered the 2026 season with just one player who had any sort of varsity experience from last season after graduating 14 seniors from the 2025 squad. It is going to take some time and patience for the Rams to adjust to varsity soccer.That is probably true, but at the same time, I expect to win every game, Madison coach Tim Lord said. I dont care who we play or what my team consists of, the goal is to win the game and give each other everything we have to do that. At the same time, we know we are going to get better.And he felt the Rams did get better throughout the evening. They will try to build on Game 1 with a home game against Shawnee on Aug. 19.I told the guys that I have coached a lot of games in my career and I have had wins that I wasnt proud of because of the way we played and losses that I was happy with because we played extremely hard and this is one of them, Lord said. They gave me everything. We just made some mistakes that Clear Fork capitalized on. Other than that, we were right there with them.Clear Fork took care of business in Game 1 of a season featuring sky-high expectations inside and outside of the program. After two straight district championships and a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference title last season, the Colts returned nearly everyone for a repeat run during the golden age of Clear Fork soccer.The momentum is high and rightfully so, but the boys arent talking about it, Gailey said. They are all business. They wanted to come in here and beat a very well-coached team in Madison and after settling in and getting back to us in the second half, we saw a team playing with a lot of confidence.And the seniors know just how special this season could be.With 13 seniors, it is easy to have extremely high expectations, Setser said. We have all been playing together since we were little so there is an extra excitement for this year. We really feel like the sky is the limit this season.The Colts have been preparing for what can be in 2026 during the offseason. They will try to stack wins when they travel to Central Christian on Aug. 18.It is a testament to our senior class, Gailey said. They have put in a lot of work for four years for a special reason. They approached our summer workouts with high intensity and improved every day. One of the main priorities for most coaches is to get out of the Week 0 scrimmages healthy.At the same time, new Bloomington North coach Andy Harding wanted to get as many reps as possible for freshman quarterback Fisher Pugh and avoid any chances of injury. He got a few more than he was planning on at Dennis O. Martin Field on Friday, Aug. 14 in a two-hour controlled workout against Southport.Pugh had to finish up the scrimmage with some of the backups after Tristan Stogdill rolled out to throw a pass, which fluttered well off target and ended his evening with an apparent injury. "We were also getting Tristan Stogsdill some reps. I don't exactly know happened, but we didn't put him back in because (his arm) felt weird."I think he was having a little bit of fun tonight. I'm proud of him." Pugh was plenty accurate most of the night, showing good touch on a pair of TD passes into the corner of the end zone. He got the ball to his best playmakers in Nate Walker and RaShon English on the perimeter, letting them go to work, spinning and making Cardinal defenders miss to pile up several highlight-reel plays. Blake Davis suffered a minor injury early and was held out as a precaution the rest of the way.Pugh also didn't panic after dropping the snap in a goal-line situation, improvising and scoring. The Cougars helped him by running the ball solidly behind Carter Matthews and Brayden Johnson.Defensively, North's group was flying early, allowing Southport only a couple first downs and no points in the opening set of 15 plays.Senior end Gunner Pugh and linebacker Anthony Wrancher were as good as advertised, with Shamar Franklin, Rudy Burton, Seth Hankins and Kaelan Frank among those making some big stops. North tackled well and Jackson Gill picked up an interception in one of the late series."I'm a defensive guy so I want to set the tone where we can," Harding said. "I thought our linebackers stepped up, got everyone in position, filling spots and breaking on balls. I was pleased with what I saw from that crew."Up front, I thought Gunnar Pugh played his heart out tonight. Our defensive tackles were making plays in the backfield. Overall, I thought our defense set the tone." The Cougars morphed into different looks all night long and stayed connected and in the right spots."We want to play sound, fundamental defense," Harding said. "I thought you saw that. It doesn't matter what they do, we're going to get lined up correctly. The linebackers are talking with each other."North opens at home next Friday, Aug. 21 against rival Bloomington South.Bloomington South at Lawrence CentralBloomington South went up to Indianapolis to face a Lawrence Central team now under the command of former Ben Davis coach Russ Mann.The Class 6A Bears usually provide a good test for the Panthers with their size, speed and athleticism, and this year was no different. The offense moved the ball well. Their team speed gave us some issues on the perimeter early, but we adjusted and settled in. They're big and strong and physical and we want that. We only got outside for an hour this week with the heat, then the lightning. We got in the gym, but we were limited in what we did."Individually, South's top players handled it well. Quarterback Duncan Combs and running back Hayden Clark had the time and space to perform."Duncan and the O-line played really well," Johnson said. "The inside backers were solid. The receivers were pretty good blocking on the perimeter Hayden had almost 100 yards. The guys you expect played well."Our O-line pushed their front a little bit. "I thought it went really well," Edgewood coach Scott Fischer said. "The defense was a little bit ahead of the offense. The defense really played well. They were physical, really sound. We didn't give up big plays. They just did a really good job."Offensively, we moved the ball early, but sputtered a bit when we started subbing. We ran the ball hard. "We scored a lot of touchdowns. Our offense was clicking. "We held them at bay outside of that, though. We tackled fairly well but the one TD they scored on we had missed four tackles."Sophomore quarterback Saxton Pennycuff looked good with a year of experience under his belt."He's matured so much in a year," Nikirk said. "He made every right read tonight. Last year, he threw a lot of interceptions but he did not put the ball in harm's way tonight. And all our receivers caught the ball, but we messed up on a few routes."Overall, last year to this year was a complete 180."Owen Valley at North DaviessNew coach Troy Burgess is preaching a more physical brand of football and saw his Owen Valley squad match up well in the department with talented North Daviess team. Up next is Brown County at home in Week 1."I liked our physicality tonight," Burgess said. "I thought we matched that pretty well. That's a good football team, they're going to win a lot of games. So, I was happy with that."We've got some things to work on. We got hit a couple times in the open field and didn't do a good job tackling. Offensively, they've got some good linebackers and we didn't do a good job getting to the second level to block them. Those are those two things we've got to get better at."
