SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJamal Adams is out for the year with a knee injuryAs expected, veteran defender Jamal Adams's 2026 season is over, after only one preseason game.Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Adams has been diagnosed with a season-ending knee injury. The specific nature of the injury was not specified. It's a brutal blow for Adams, a former All-Pro safety who had moved to linebacker with the Raiders in 2025 and who likely was going to be deployed in multiple positions by the Minnesota defense.A top-10 pick in 2017 by the Jets, Adams had signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $1.41 million with the Vikings just before training camp started. He had already made a great impression on the coaching staff and his teammates.Adams was involved in 11 snaps during the first half of Saturday's preseason opener at the Giants. He had an impressive backfield tackle of a running back. The injury happened on a non-contact basis on the artificial surface at MetLife Stadium. Which serves only to underscore the widespread preference by players for grass, which absorbs the forces generated by the players. Artificial turf causes the forces to ricochet back into the players' bodies.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 289 Views 0 voorbeeld -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVikings LB Jamal Adams out for season after being carted off with knee injury in preseason openerJamal Adams season is over. The Minnesota Vikings linebacker, who was carted off in their preseason opener on Saturday, sustained a season-ending knee injury, according to the NFL Networks Ian Rapoport. Specifics of the knee injury are not yet known, though Adams wont be back on the field now until 2027.Adams only played 11 snaps in the Vikings 13-10 win over the New York Giants. He went down with a non-contact injury while trying to defend what ended up being a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jaxson Dart to Malachi Fields in the second quarter. Adams fell in the middle of the field, and had to be carted off.Non-contact injury for Jamal Adams (32) on NYGs cement turf. Brutal. He was going to contribute heavily to this defense. pic.twitter.com/fE0fcxSJF1 Thor Nystrom (@thorku) August 15, 2026You feel his passion every single day. Certainly felt it, spent a few moments with him before they took him in, Vikings coach Kevin OConnell said just after halftime of that preseason contest. Youre just crushed for him. The role that he was kind of paving for himself, and then just having a personality, experience, toughness that he brought in such a short amount of time. Were going to miss him.The Vikings struck a deal to land Adams ahead of training camp last month. He appeared in 17 games last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, and recorded 45 total tackles and a sack. This post will be updated with more information shortly.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 289 Views 0 voorbeeld

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM“It’s go time” – Edward Cabrera needs to be quality for the CubsPatrick Gorski-Imagn ImagesAlthough the Cubs pitching staff is a lot deeper than it was before the trade deadline, the Cubs had hoped Edward Cabreras return would provide a boost. Cabrera has been shelved since June with a left hamstring strain; before that, he missed two weeks at the end of May with a right middle finger blister. In the starts Cabrera has made for the Cubs this season, hes underwhelmed. A 5.04 ERA and a dropoff in his strikeout rate was not what the Cubs traded for last winter, when they sent top outfield prospect Owen Caissie, along with two other minor leaguers, to the Marlins.Cabrera is capable of being the kind of starting pitcher who can round out a strong playoff rotation, but with less than 40 regular season games remaining, he needs to show that hes the guy the Cubs thought they were getting.Frankly, were at go time here, manager Craig Counsell said. So I think you got to go. Were at a stage where with the people around the roster that its go time. And I think Edward [Cabrera] understands that.Facing the Cardinals on Sunday, Cabrera didnt do much to inspire confidence. It took until just the third batter of the game for St. Louis to claim the lead. Cabrera gave up a leadoff double to JJ Wetherholt, and two batters later Alec Burleson launched a 421-foot rocket into the right field bleachers. In the 3 2/3 innings that Cabrera pitched, the Cardinals had seven balls in play with exit velocities of at least 92 milers per hour. In all, he gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks. Of the 11 outs he recorded, just two were strikeouts. Given that some of the allure in trading for him last December was the high strikeout rate as high as 10 per nine innings in 2024 the Cubs might be experiencing some buyers remorse. After Sunday start, Cabrera had a bandaid on his right middle finger, the same one that prompted an IL stint earlier this season. He said he felt a sensation on the finger from the beginning of his start and that it continued to get worse as he pitched.I tried to push through it but wasnt able to, Cabrera said through interpreter Fredy Quevedo, Jr. That might explain the command issues Cabrera was having. His velocity was as sharp as ever, but Counsell noted that the split between Cabreras fastball and his changeup was too small, which factored into his struggles. The lack of swing and miss is concerning, he said. The separation between the changeup and the fastball right now, the hitter is not showing you that its a lot. And so the changeup maybe acts as a sinker at times, but not to the point where you can get some swing and miss on it or the fastball.Hes going to need that at some point. We gotta work to get that back.Counsell was iffy about whether Cabrera will make his next start when that spot comes up in the rotation, saying that it would have to be talked about. But from Cabreras perspective, hes planning to make his next start, no matter the blister and poor performance. He said he had already worked with trainers to address the finger, saying that theyd applied a substance to it to harden the skin. Asked if he thinks hell stay in the rotation, Cabrera said simply, 100 percent.Theres some comfort in the short term from the fact that the front offices aggressive trade deadline means the Cubs have the arms necessary to navigate a postseason, with or without Cabrera. If he is going to continue to be unreliable, the team can manage if he is left off of a playoff roster. But beyond this season, the Cubs have made a hefty investment in Cabrera. Not only are there the aforementioned prospects it cost to get him from the Marlins, but the 28-year-old was appealing because he is under team control through 2028. Ron Chenoy-Imagn ImagesWith Sundays 11-4 loss to the Cardinals, the Cubs squandered another chance to narrow the gap between them and the Brewers. Headed into Sundays game, they were four games back from Milwaukee, a gap thats widened to five games with Sundays results. Though the Cubs are still firmly in the top wild card spot, the division title is in striking distance, so every loss becomes even more damaging. There are still seven head-to-head contests between the Cubs and Brewers left on the schedule, so the Cubs remain in the proverbial drivers seat. They can make the most of those matchups when they come in September, but a series loss against the Cardinals now means there will be more ground to cover when the Cubs face Milwaukee. And Cabreras struggles come with greater consequences when set against the fact that Javier Assad was optioned to make room for him on the active roster. Assad has a 3.59 ERA in 21 appearances this season. He has made ten starts and earned two saves in his 11 relief appearances. Counsell said Assad will almost certainly be back later this season, but sending him off to Triple-A Iowa as Cabrera struggled mightily is tough. At this point, the decision we made was just to preserve every pitcher, Counsell said. And certainly in [Assad]s shoes, that doesnt feel fair, but from a depth perspective this was a way to preserve everybody and keep maximum depth. In other words, because Assad has options and other pitchers on the 26-man roster dont, he goes to Iowa and they stay. For now. In light of Cabreras issues, thats a harder decision for Cubs fans to accept. The first start after being on the injured list since late June wasnt really going to prove anything one way or another when it comes to Cabrera, but given his performance when he has been healthy this season, its not unreasonable to keep tepid expectations going forward. And if the blister continues to be an issue, he might not be available to pitch anyway. The Cubs need Cabrera to be the guy they traded for last winter for a number of reasons, but the most immediate one is that theyre in a battle for the National League Central and have serious potential for a long run in October. They need him to contribute on both fronts.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 289 Views 0 voorbeeld -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFlamengo thrash Mirassol away, tighten grip on Brasileiro leadFlamengo thrash Mirassol away, tighten grip on Brasileiro leadIn the countryside of So Paulo, Flamengo thrashed Mirassol 5-1 this Sunday (16), in the 23rd round of the 2026 Brasileiro. As the score suggests, it was a walk in the park for the Rubro-Negro side, which had no trouble at all on the pitch. Before the midway point of the first half, Plata took advantage of goalkeeper Walters poor attempt to deal with a cross from the right and set up Carrascal to open the scoring. With a mixed lineup because of the decisive Libertadores match in midweek, Flamengo simply controlled the game until halftime. After the break, Carrascal kept leading the Rio side. The Colombian set up Luiz Arajo to make it two and deliver the games "former player rule" goal.Wasting no time, Carrascal released Ayrton Lucas down the left, and the full-back crossed for Pedro to score the third. And the Colombian attacking midfielder then led the decisive counterattack down the right and provided yet another assist, this time for Pedro to turn the win into a rout.Just a few minutes after coming on, Arrascaeta provided the assist for Samuel Lino to score Flamengos fifth goal of the match. And Joo Victor, taking advantage of Reinaldos corner into the six-yard box, pulled one back with a header for Mirassol. There was controversyStill in the first half, Carrascal was racing forward alone, but was brought down by Mirassols Denlson.Referee Rafael Klein chose only to show a yellow card to the So Paulo sides midfielder. The Nao showed all its outrage with the referees decision on social media. How it standsWith their second straight win in the Brasileiro, Flamengo reached 45 points and moved right up behind leaders Palmeiras (48 points). However, Rubro-Negro still has a game in hand, precisely against Mirassol, valid for the fourth round of the league, though the CBF has yet to set a date for it to be played. If they beat the So Paulo side, Flamengo will take the lead from Palmeiras because, at the moment, they have the better goal difference (25 to 21).At the bottom end of the table, Mirassol, who had not lost at home since April 11, when they were beaten 2-1 by Bahia in the 11th round, sit in a bitter 16th place with 23 points.Rubro-Negro return to action next Wednesday (19), when they host Cruzeiro at the Maracan in the second leg of the Libertadores round of 16 (first leg 1-1).Meanwhile, Leo Caipira travel to Quito, Ecuador, to face LDU on Thursday (20), in the same stage of the continental tournament (first leg 1-1).This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMariners Game #125 Preview and Discussion, 8/16/26: SEA at HOUNEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 12: Bryan Woo #22 of the Seattle Mariners looks on prior to the game between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 in New York, New York. (Photo by Jonathan Pensiero/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty ImagesThe Seattle Mariners have followed up a playoff berth with a disappointing season that ended with similar hopes dashed, in particularly violent fashion on Friday. Then, in the first game of the off-season, those same silly Mariners went and won decisively and dare I say, entertainingly. Okay, so the season being over bit is hopefully obviously facetious, but the outlook remains grim nonetheless. In todays Sunday game three against the Astros the series win is on the line for either team, but perhaps more emphatically, Seattles seasons hopes remain hanging onto an even thinner strip, and with but a pinky. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAfter Pro Bowl season, Packers CB Keisean Nixon is fighting for starting jobKeisean Nixon had previously been a Pro Bowler as a return specialist. Last year, he made it to the Pro Bowl as a cornerback. This year, the long-time Packer is fighting for a spot in the starting lineup.Nixon shrugged at the reality on Sunday."I dont see myself in no competition," Nixon told reporters on Sunday, via Ryan Wood of USA Today. "I'm coming in here to compete for myself. What they do, and what they choose to do, that's out of my control. I can only control what I can control."No, I came from the bottom, so I'm here. I'm Year 8. Since I've been here, I ain't been off the field, and anything they've asked me to do I've played at a high level. . . . I always show up."On Sunday, coach Matt LaFleur discussed the key factors in the competition."Obviously, it starts with doing your right assignment, and then it comes down to your style of play," LaFleur said. "How are you competing, going after the ball. Not only in the past game, but in the run game as well? Are you sticking your nose in there? And we need corners that are willing and capable tacklers."The Packers' unofficial preseason depth chart lists Nixon as the starter, with Benjamin St-Juste as Nixon's backup. Nixon started the preseason opener at Pittsburgh, playing 19 snaps.Nixon, undrafted in 2019, enters the final year of a three-year, $18 million contract. He's due to make $2.66 million in salary and per-game roster bonuses. St-Juste signed a two-year, $9.8 million deal with Green Bay in the offseason.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 233 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTy Simpson joins Baker Mayfield as only QBs to do this in preseasonTy Simpson didn't just have a great first NFL game; he had a historic one. The Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback became the first player since Baker Mayfield in 2018 to throw for 190 yards and two touchdowns in his preseason debut, according to ESPN. Simpson completed 21-of-25 passes with no turnovers or sacks in his first NFL action against the Chiefs.Head coach Sean McVay said afterward that Simpson had "good command" of the offense, adding that he took what the defense gave him. Simpson himself stayed measured discussing the outing, saying that he still has a lot to learn about the offense. The comparison to Mayfield's 2018 debut, where the ex-Browns quarterback completed 11-of-20 for 212 yards and two touchdowns without an interception against the Giants, is notable given how that game is remembered. Mayfield's rookie flash launched a run that included four teams in seven seasons. He played four seasons in Cleveland before a 2020 trade to the Panthers, a waiver claim by the Rams, and eventually a landing spot in Tampa Bay, where he's been the starting quarterback for the past three seasons.Simpson's situation should look different by design. Los Angeles drafted him as the presumptive successor to Matthew Stafford, meaning his path, if things go according to plan, is a matter of patience rather than a search for the right fit.Despite the strong debut, Simpson still technically needs to beat out Stetson Bennett for the No. 2 job behind Stafford, and he won't crack the starting lineup barring injury. The Rams will get more chances to evaluate his growth as the preseason continues, with his workload in a potential third preseason game offering another data point on where he stands in the quarterback pecking order heading into roster cuts. This article originally appeared on Rams Wire: Ty Simpson joins Baker Mayfield as only QBs to do this in preseason0 Reacties 0 aandelen 233 Views 0 voorbeeld -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJordan Spieth misses out on advancing in PGA Tour postseason by one shotMEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Jordan Spieth set a target of 67 for the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, certain that would be enough for him to crack the top 50 in the FedEx Cup and advance to next week. Turns out he would have only needed a 69, and even that was out of his reach.Spieth and Keith Mitchell, who was up to his knees in water on the 18th trying to salvage his postseason, narrowly missed out advancing in the PGA Tour postseason Sunday, losing a chance to be guaranteed to play in all the $20 million signature events in 2027.One birdie over his last three holes would have done it for Spieth. Mitchell would have needed to shave two shots from his score. He made bogey from the water on the 18th. I just feel like Im kind of getting back to playing really good golf, like its close to kicking off, and Im not going to play a tournament for a long time, Spieth said after closing with three straight pars for an even-par 70.Spieth came into the first playoff event at No. 54 and was projected to need something around the top 15 depending on others around him to make it to the BMW Championship for the first time since 2023.He made it through the worrisome stretch of holes Nos. 11 through 14 at the TPC Southwind with a pair of bogeys and a 30-foot birdie putt. If you can get through there unscathed, you know you're looking at some opportunities on the other side, Spieth said. But he tugged his tee shot on the 15th far enough to the left that it found the water, leading to bogey. His chip from behind the green on the par-5 16th was too strong and rolled off the green, and he missed a 15-foot birdie putt. He missed a birdie from about that distance on the 17th.Needing a birdie on the 18th, he went from a patch of dirt right of the fairway just over the green, still a putter in hand from 35 feet. He started walking before the long birdie putt finished short of the cup, giving him a par.I just didnt execute enough shots and ... a couple bounces could have gone one way or the other, he said. I needed to be almost flawless today.Mitchell, who has never been among the top 30 to reach the Tour Championship in his nine years on the PGA Tour, started at No. 49 this week and was on the bubble seemingly all week. He said he never looked at a leaderboard until walking off the 17th green. If he was safe, he could have played out to the right, away from the water, knowing a bogey wouldn't hurt him. But he was right on the projected bubble of top 50. He took on the shot. He thought it was ideal, but it barely cleared the water, and hopped below the hazard line on the bank of grass. For Mitchell, there was no option. He removed his shoes and rolled up his pants, took his stance in the water up to his calves and gave it a shot. It bounced short and took a hop to the left, riding the bank down into the water. He did well to make bogey for a 72. In the end, even a par would have left him less than a point short of Matt McCarty at No. 50.I thought it was perfect when I hit it. Caught a little bit of a gust, and it came up that short, Mitchell said. The second shot was obviously interesting, and I just didnt play it far enough right. The new points system that puts an emphasis on season performance means the postseason is not nearly as volatile. Sungjae Im, who started at No. 53 and started the final round tied for second, comfortably advanced.Mitchell was the only one from the top 50 to fall out.Maverick McNealy came in at No. 50 and was on the bubble all afternoon, played bogey-free on the back nine with two birdies for a 69 to tie for 19th same position as Spieth to secure his spot among the top 50. McNealy figured he was out when he tied for 63rd in the 69-man field. He made it on the number when Mitchell and Spieth couldn't catch him.I think the top 50 number is probably the most important number on the PGA Tour right now, McNealy said. Im excited to get to St. Louis and just take a Hail Mary swing to see if I can get into the Tour Championship, which is the goal every year.___See APs full golf coverage here0 Reacties 0 aandelen 319 Views 0 voorbeeld
