SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMakayla Timpson breakout game lifts Indiana Fever to important overtime win over Atlanta DreamATLANTA The Indiana Fever won a pivotal overtime game over the Dream 95-91 Sunday at State Farm Arena to finish the season series 2-2 and preserve a tiebreaker opportunity at the end of the regular season.\n Caitlin Clark made the clutch free throws at the end of the game, finishing with 26 points and nine assists. Kelsey Mitchell had her 19th straight game scoring 20 or more points, finishing with 20. Makayla Timpson had a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds, while Aliyah Boston had 18 points and 14 rebounds.\n At the end of regulation, Rhyne Howard's 3-point shot to win it missed, then Angel Reese had a point-blank layup attempt miss. Reese was 3 for 13 in the paint after that missed, and she finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Allisha Gray had a game-high 32 points.\n Here's what I liked and disliked, and what the win means.\n Buy 2026 Indiana Fever tickets!\n What I liked in the Indiana Fever's win vs Atlanta Dream\n Pesky defense in the first half: Fever coach Stephanie White said their defense was the thing that sparked their three-game win streak headed into Atlanta, and that pesky defense continued in the first half on Sunday. Indiana held Angel Reese to an 0-of-6 start from the field, blocking her twice in that sequence (one from Makayla Timpson and one from Aliyah Boston). Boston also deflected multiple overhead passes from Atlanta, picking up two steals and at other times keeping the Dream's offense uncomfortable.Fighting back in the fourth: Indiana trailed by eight points with nine minutes left in the game. With three minutes left, at the end of a 12-3 run, they had a one-point lead. Indiana found ways to get the back in their hands, as Caitlin Clark drew a crucial foul on Allisha Gray to negate a Dream possession, then Sophie Cunningham picked up an and-1 to give Indiana its first lead since early in the third quarter. Kelsey Mitchell kept the Fever in striking distance with another tie off a 3-pointer with a minute left in the game, ultimately sending it to overtime.Makayla Timpson in overtime: Timpson was crucial for the Fever in overtime, scoring six points in three minutes -- including rushing in for a rebound and a putback off a miss from Kelsey Mitchell to put the Fever up six. Fitting nicely to the starting role she took on just over a week ago, Timpson finished with a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds.\n What I disliked in the Indiana Fever's win vs Atlanta Dream\n Missed free-throws: Free points in a close game like Sunday's is pivotal, and the Fever were not on top of their game from the charity stripe at the beginning of the game. Clark went 1-of-2 in her first trip to the free-throw line in the first quarter, then Timpson missed her first two free throws in the first quarter. Monique Billings missed pair in the second quarter, then made just 1-of-2 in a 3-point game in the fourth. End of the second quarter: The Fever lost some of their juice as the game rolled into halftime and Reese started to make some shots. The Dream went on a 17-4 run over the final five minutes of the quarter, with Reese accounting for five of those points before she picked up her third foul of the game and subbed out. The Fever only made one field goal in that stretch, with the one two points coming off free-throws, and the Dream went from a nine-point deficit to a four-point lead at halftime.\n What the Indiana Fever's win vs Atlanta Dream means\n This was one of those crucial games for the Fever, who are in the middle of five teams within two games of each other in the standings, to maintain a seeding advantage over the Dream. \n With this win, Indiana finishes the season series 2-2 against the Dream, maintaining a chance to win the second tiebreaker (which is record against teams with a winning percentage over .500). The Fever (23-12) go 1.5 games ahead of the Dream (21-13) for the fourth seed and final homecourt advantage slot as the regular season winds down. If Indiana can continue the streak its own, the Fever could win that tiebreaker and potentially snag that final hosting spot in the playoffs.\n Chloe Petersonis the Indiana Fever beat reporter for IndyStar. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSonny Styles records three tackles, takes on surprising role in first NFL actionSonny Styles records three tackles, takes on surprising role in first NFL action originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Linebacker Sonny Styles got his first taste of NFL action, and while the rookie didnt deliver a highlight-filled performance, he was handed plenty of responsibility from the start.Styles played during the opening series, a 14-play Miami touchdown drive that immediately tested the young linebacker and the defense. He finished his appearance with three tackles but wasnt a major factor in slowing down the Dolphins offense.Still, the most noteworthy part of Styles debut might have been what was on his helmet.Styles wore the green dot, meaning he was responsible for receiving the defensive play calls from the sideline and communicating them to his teammates. Giving that responsibility to a rookie in his first preseason action showed the level of trust the coaching staff already has in his ability to process information and command the defense. There were also predictable growing pains.Styles occasionally looked like exactly what he was a rookie playing his first NFL game and adjusting to the speed, spacing and responsibilities that come with playing linebacker at the professional level.Coaches trusted him with the defenseMiamis opening possession provided a difficult introduction. The Dolphins methodically moved the football during the 14-play scoring drive, forcing Styles to diagnose formations, communicate assignments and make adjustments while experiencing NFL game speed for the first time. The three tackles wont jump off the stat sheet, but preseason football is often more about evaluation than production, particularly for young players. For Styles, the opportunity to wear the green dot could prove more significant than his final numbers. His combination of size, athleticism and versatility gives him intriguing potential, but becoming comfortable within the defensive system will take repetitions. The first outing provided exactly that.Styles wasnt dominant, and there were moments when his inexperience showed. But he received valuable snaps, handled communication duties and experienced the challenges of directing an NFL defense. Now comes the next step: learning from the film and becoming more comfortable each time he takes the field.More NFL news:Ben Johnson responds to Liam Coens pointed Caleb Williams commentLamar Jackson is already predicted to be a Hall of Fame QB for Ravens per ESPNEagles' Jalen Hurts 'shouldn't have trouble' reaching Hall of Fame if he can continue to have playoff successCowboys QB Dak Prescott projected by ESPN to be behind Lions QB Jared Goff for HOF chancePackers edge Micah Parsons already predicted to be on cusp of Hall of Fame0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 268 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHarrisburg tops Renner for second straight Class A state amateur baseball titleAug. 16MITCHELL The Harrisburg Woodies had already learned the hard way what it took to beat Renner in the Class A amateur state tournament championship game.On Sunday afternoon, they proved they could do it again.Harrisburg defeated Renner 3-1 at Cadwell Park to claim its second consecutive Class A state amateur championship over the Monarchs in as many years. The championship is the second in Harrisburg club history, and it marks the first time since the Sioux Falls Brewers went back-to-back in 2019 and 2020 that a Class A team has repeated as state champions. The Woodies completed their championship season at 27-4.Sunday's championship game was the third consecutive season in which Harrisburg and Renner met for the Class A state title. Renner won the championship in 2024, before Harrisburg answered with a 4-3 victory over the Monarchs in last year's title game in Brandon. This time, the Woodies needed another win over their familiar opponent after falling to Renner earlier in the tournament.Renner sent Harrisburg into the elimination bracket Friday with a 6-1 victory. Rather than let the loss end their title hopes, the Woodies responded Saturday, defeating Tea 8-2 at Drake Field to earn another shot at the Monarchs."Having better energy than the last time we played them was a must coming into this one," Harrisburg center fielder Jack Sutton said. "We showed up a little bit flat on Friday, but I felt like we came into this one with a lot more energy and it spoke for itself."That energy showed immediately. Harrisburg jumped in front in the top of the first inning when Michael Oakland ripped an RBI single to score Sutton, giving the Woodies an early 1-0 lead. Harrisburg added two more runs in the second, with Sutton delivering a two-out, two-RBI double into left field to bring home J.T. Miller and Dalton Allen to give the Woodies an early 3-0 advantage that they would not give back. With the offense establishing the lead early, Harrisburg left-handed pitcher Tanner Brown took over. The former Augustana ace delivered one of the defining performances of the tournament, working all nine innings and keeping Renner off the scoreboard until the final frame. Brown threw 133 pitches, including 92 strikes, while striking out 15 of the 36 batters he faced. He allowed five hits, one run and two walks in the complete-game victory."My mindset was just not to walk guys," Brown said. "A lot of trouble happens when you walk guys, so I was just trying to get ahead and get that first strike early to keep the runners off the bags."For eight innings, Brown and the Harrisburg defense kept Renner from finding a run. The Monarchs finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth when Maddux Baggs lined an RBI double down the third-base line, scoring Renner's lone run of the afternoon."Yeah, it sucks giving up the run in the ninth, but that's baseball," Brown said. "Also, I know almost every single guy on that team, and so it was just a blast throwing against those guys."Sutton finished with four of Harrisburg's 10 hits, driving in two runs and scoring once. Allen added three hits, while Oakland collected a hit and an RBI.Baggs provided the Monarchs' only run and one of their five hits, while Chaz Palmer, Ryan Hander, Dave Borchardt and Adam Durfee each recorded one hit. Jeremiah Mauch took the pitching loss after allowing six hits, three runs and five walks while striking out five batters in six innings. Eric Brothers worked three innings of relief, allowing four hits while striking out three.Renner finished its season at 14-8.Harrisburg's Dalton Lehnen was named the Class A tournament's Keith Cutler Most Valuable Player after going 10-for-22 (.455) at the plate while posting a 1.42 ERA, recording 11 strikeouts and earning one pitching victory.Cameron Jensen, of the Tea Steam, earned the Sid Lundquist Batting Champion Award for Class A, finishing the tournament 11-for-23 (.478) across three tournament games. The Yankton Lakers received the Richard Rockafellow Sportsmanship Award. Carson Jager, of the Brookings Cubs, was honored on Saturday night as the Class A recipient of the Tony Adams Hustle Award. Now, Harrisburg has a chance to build something even bigger. Two straight state championships have turned the Woodies into the latest Class A dynasty, and Sunday's victory gave the program its second title while extending a remarkable run against the same opponent that has stood in its way for three consecutive championship games.Sutton believes there is no reason the run has to end here."It's a brotherhood, for sure," Sutton said. "Everybody hangs out with each other. We want to be with each other. We want to play all these games together. And going forward, we have so much pitching and so many guys. It's going to be a blast for years to come. We're not done."0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 214 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAngels crush Clark to reclaim Class B amateur crownAug. 16MITCHELL Three years ago, when Alexandria and Clark met in the Class B amateur baseball tournament bracket, the Traders scored a significant first-round upset to send the Angels home early.Sunday afternoon, with a state championship at stake, the Halos made sure no such surprise was in store.A massive first inning set the tone, as Alexandria steamrolled Clark 12-2 in seven innings at Cadwell Park to claim the club's sixth South Dakota Class B amateur baseball tournament title overall, all since 2013, and first since 2020. The Angels finished the season with a 21-3 overall record, also complete with the Sunshine League regular-season title, District 5B tournament title."It's an awesome feeling; there's nothing better," said Alexandria player/manager Peyton Smith. "My feeling is the next one is always the best one. I love this."Four batters and nine total pitches into the game, Alexandria grabbed the lead on a Tyson Gau single that scored Dakota Munger. It was just the beginning of a first-inning avalanche that saw 14 batters come to the plate and put Clark at a 9-0 deficit before the Traders came up to bat for the first time. Along the way, the Angels chased Clark starting pitcher Hudson Fuller, who had earned credit for two wins in the tournament, after just two outs."There's no better way to get started, especially in the championship game, but we knew we had to keep our composure because they were always coming back in earlier games," Smith said. "We had to keep our foot on the gas pedal."The Angels kept the offense rolling in the second, adding three more runs to make it 12-0.On the mound, Alexandria turned to Munger for the first time in the tournament, and he was in complete control from the first pitch. He sent down the first two batters he faced on strikes as part of his eight strikeouts for the game while yielding nine hits and one walk in the seven-inning complete game."Dakota is one of the better shortstops in the state, so we just couldn't take him off of that position," Smith said. "But I told him, 'This is going to be your game,' and he delivered. He's been big for us all year, and he did it again today."For his efforts, Munger was named the Keith Culter Most Valuable Player for the Class B tournament, finishing 13-for-25 (.520) at the plate with nine runs batted in and four extra-base hits, including a home run, across five games in addition to the pitching win in the title game.Clark got on the scoreboard in the third by way of an RBI double off the bat of Zach Toben, who was honored on Saturday night as the Class B winner of the Tony Adams Hustle Award. Toben's hit scored Cooper Pommer, who came around to score again in the fifth.Alexandria was paced by the bat of Ben Wilber, who had three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Munger added three RBIs, two hits and two runs scored. Jerrod Zens and Charlie Dubanoski each tallied two hits and two RBIs.Jakob Steen led the way offensively for Clark with two hits and one RBI, while Marik Junker added two hits. Fuller was tagged with the pitching loss, as Jack Heesch and Kaleb Drenth each made relief appearances. For Clark (10-9-1), the title game defeat ended a magical tournament run. The Traders, who won just one game between June 12 and the start of the District 1B tournament on July 25, came alive in the postseason with six victories in eight games, including four wins by a single run. After getting by Wessington Springs in the opening round, Clark's performances at Cadwell Park included wins over the Cornbelt League champion Dell Rapids Mudcats, another Cornbelt power in the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks and South Central League champion Tabor.Clark was recognized as the winners of the Richard Rockafellow Sportsmanship Award. Also among the post-tournament award winners, Weston Hansen, of Dell Rapids PBR, earned the Sid Lundquist Batting Champion Award for Class B, finishing 8 of 14 for a .571 average across four games. But the day belonged to the Angels, who won their 52nd state tournament game all-time, which ranks as the fifth-most in state amateur baseball history. This story will be updated.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 214 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCaitlin Clark leads Fever past Dream in overtime thrillerThe Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever played a huge game on Sunday afternoon. The two teams entered just a half-game apart in the playoff standings with only 10 games left in the regular season. The possible playoff matchup lived up to the billing, needing overtime to decide the winner. When the dust settled, the Fever escaped with a 95-91 win, picking up a huge win. Indiana forced the season series against Atlanta to end tied 2-2, keeping the Dream from clinching an important head-to-head tiebreaker. The win comes in the first game of a five-game road trip for Indiana. The Fever have been focused on resting their stars when they can this season, and now the team plays five games in the next eight days, including Sundays win over the Dream.Atlanta ended the first half on a 17-4 run. Allisha Gray finished the half with 17 points, while no other teammate had more than seven. She ended the game with 32 points, a career-high, but it wasnt enough to help her team pick up the win. The Dream had a chance to win at the buzzer. Rhyne Howard missed a three-point attempt. Angel Reese had a clean look right at the basket but missed, and then Naz Hillmon couldnt get the last-second attempt to fall, sending the game to OT. The extra frame was just as back-and-forth as regulation was between the two teams. With 23 seconds left in overtime, the Fever held a three-point lead. Kelsey Mitchell hit a layup, not only extending Indianas lead but also giving her 20 points in the game. She has now scored at least 20 points in 19 straight games. Howard was then fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three free throws, bringing the Dream within two with 10.8 seconds left. Clark was fouled and hit both free throws, putting the Fever up four. Atlanta tried to hit a three-pointer to force a foul, but missed. Clark got the rebound and flung the ball down to the other end of the court while time ran out. The Fever guard finished with 26 points, 9 assists and 3 rebounds. Indiana center Aliyah Boston had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. With all of the focus on Clark, Mitchell, and Boston, Makayla Timpson was able to fly under the radar and finish with a career-high 20 points, picking up key points in overtime. Atlanta was led by Gray, who had a career-high 32 points and added seven rebounds and five assists to her stat line. Reese had yet another double-double, this time with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Indianas win moves the Fever to 23-12 on the season. The Fever currently hold the fourth spot in the WNBA playoffs with nine more regular season games to play. Indiana will be back in action on the road against the Toronto Tempo on Tuesday night. Atlanta now begins a four-game road trip starting on Tuesday against the Las Vegas Aces. The Dream dropped to 21-13 on the year, but remained the five-seed in the playoff picture. Currently, Atlanta has 10 games left, and it is hard not to start eyeballing the Dreams final games of the regular season, as they will play the New York Liberty in their last two games, which could come with great playoff implications.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 215 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση
