Apparently, the New England Patriots are ultra serious about locking down Christian Gonzalez for the long haul. "We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player and as a person. That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and, coincidentally, it's the highest contract in Patriots' franchise history," Patriots owner Robert Kraft said on Saturday when asked about Gonzalez, who's extension-eligible, at team training camp, according to ESPN. "So, we're glad we drafted him, and he's developed here, and we hope he'll be with us for a long time." Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said that contract talks with Gonzalez were "ongoing" on Friday. The contract to beat for an NFL cornerback in both total money and average annual value is Trent McDuffie's four-year, $124 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams ($31 million AAV), which also included a record $100 million guaranteed for a cornerback. Meanwhile, the contract to beat in Patriots history in both total money and average annual value is defensive tackle Milton Williams' four-year, $104 million deal ($26 million AAV), which he signed with the franchise in March 2025. Regarding Gonzalez, the soon-to-be fourth-year cornerback is coming off a 2025 campaign where he earned his first career Pro Bowl nod, totaling 10 passes defended, 69 combined tackles and just one missed tackle across 14 regular-season games, according to Pro Football Focus; he missed three games due to a hamstring injury. Then, across New England's four postseason games, Gonzalez totaled an NFL-high seven passes defended in the postseason and reeled in an ultimate game-sealing interception against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game with 2:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. The year prior (2024), Gonzalez brought down two interceptions and recorded 11 passes defended, which came after his 2023 rookie campaign was cut short after four games due to a shoulder injury. New England selected Gonzalez with the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Oregon.

The Detroit Lions do not need to make a splashy move every time a roster question pops up.Sometimes the smartest answer is the most familiar one.With training camp placing fresh pressure on Detroits secondary depth, former Lions defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu deserves another look. Not a guaranteed contract. Not a promised role. Just a workout and an opportunity to show Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell what he can still offer.There is very little downside.Ifeatu Melifonwu Already Knows the LionsMelifonwu would not arrive in Allen Park needing an introduction to the organization.Detroit selected him in the 2021 NFL Draft, and he spent several seasons moving between cornerback and safety. His time with the Lions featured injuries and stretches of inconsistent availability, but it also included flashes of the athleticism and versatility that made him an intriguing prospect in the first place.Mike Payton of A to Z Sports recently identified Melifonwu as a player Detroit should consider bringing in for a training camp tryout.The logic is easy to understand.Melifonwu knows the culture. He knows what Campbell expects. He has played in Detroits defensive system, understands the demands placed on Lions defensive backs and can line up at more than one position.At 27 years old, he should still have enough athletic ability to compete for a depth role.Detroit Could Use More Secondary CompetitionThe Lions may feel comfortable with the players currently competing at cornerback and safety, but training camp is exactly when teams should examine every reasonable option.Depth disappears quickly in the NFL.One injury can change a players role overnight. A second injury can force a team to rely on someone who was expected to spend the season on the practice squad.Melifonwu would give Detroit another experienced body capable of working at safety, cornerback or in certain matchup packages. That flexibility would be especially useful during camp, when coaches are evaluating different combinations and trying to determine which reserves can handle multiple assignments.He would not need to become a starter for the move to make sense.If Melifonwu proved capable of helping on special teams, filling in at multiple spots and providing veteran insurance, he could make the bottom of the roster more competitive.His Previous Detroit Tenure Was ComplicatedThere is a reason Melifonwu remains available.His first run with the Lions never developed into the steady, long-term role the organization once envisioned. Injuries interrupted his progress, and his best stretches were too often followed by additional time away from the field.Detroit eventually moved on.That history should not disqualify him from receiving another opportunity. It should simply shape the expectations.The Lions would not be bringing him back to reclaim a starting job. They would be evaluating whether a healthy and experienced Melifonwu is better than one of the developmental defensive backs currently fighting for a roster spot.That is a question worth answering on the practice field.Melifonwu Has Continued Seeking Another OpportunityMelifonwu has remained active in his effort to return to an NFL roster.According to Payton, the former Lions defensive back has recently worked out for the Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks. He also spent time with the Miami Dolphins and reportedly played well during that opportunity.No team has signed him yet.That could work in Detroits favor.Melifonwu would likely come with a modest price tag and little financial risk. A tryout would cost the Lions almost nothing, and even a short-term camp contract would not prevent Holmes from pursuing another option if one becomes available.This is the kind of move good teams make around the edges.Bring in competition. Let the player prove he belongs. Make the roster stronger without attaching unnecessary expectations.The Jameson Williams Scuffle Should Not MatterMelifonwu returned to Allen Park last year as a member of the Dolphins during joint practices and became involved in a brief confrontation with Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams.Training camp scuffles attract attention because cameras are everywhere and fans are eager for any sign of intensity. Most disappear as quickly as they begin.Payton described the incident as the kind of competitive exchange that happens between players during emotional practices. There is no reason to believe it would prevent Detroit from considering a reunion.Camp is hot. Players are tired. Jobs are on the line.Tempers occasionally flare.Unless the Lions know something more serious about the incident, it should have no impact on whether Melifonwu receives a workout.Familiarity Makes the Evaluation EasierDetroit would have a much clearer picture of Melifonwu than it would of most available free agents.The Lions know his strengths. They know his medical history. They know how he responds to coaching and whether he fits inside the locker room.That familiarity can cut both ways. Perhaps Detroit has already decided that another reunion is not worth pursuing.Still, circumstances change.A player who did not fit one version of the roster may make sense for another. A former starter may become a useful reserve. A defender who once needed developmental snaps may return with enough experience to handle a narrower role.There is no harm in checking.Bottom LineThe Detroit Lions should bring Ifeatu Melifonwu back to Allen Park for a training camp tryout.He already understands the organization, can play cornerback and safety, and remains young enough to compete for a role. His injury history and uneven first stint with Detroit are valid concerns, but neither should prevent the Lions from taking another look.A workout carries almost no risk.If Melifonwu has something left, Detroit could add inexpensive and versatile depth to its secondary. If he does not, the Lions move on without losing anything.Sometimes the obvious move is obvious for a reason.

You guys have seen it all year last year, and the year before. He just keeps doing things right. Im proud of him for getting in there, jumping in there. He understands if hes got something down the sideline, and a ball down the field, that hes got a chance its coming his way. Great catch.Other performances of noteQB Tommy DeVito: The quarterbacks did not get a lot of work on Saturday, but backup Tommy DeVito still managed to produce a rough start. He went 0-for-3 on the day and struggled particularly during his first series on the field. No turnovers are a positive, but thats about it.WR DeMario Douglas: The momentum train keeps rolling for the Patriots fourth-year receiver. After already being actively involved during the spring, Douglas continued to play a sizable role in the teams passing offense on Day 1 of camp. He hauled in two passes from Drake Maye and was heavily involved as a slot receiver alongside the aforementioned A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs when New England went to 11-personnel.CB Christian Gonzalez: It took exactly one snap for the Patriots starts to collide on Saturday. His first pass attempt of the session saw Drake Maye target A.J. Brown with Gonzalez in coverage. The soon-to-be highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, however, was up for the challenge and provided tight man coverage that helped the ball fall to the ground incomplete. Gonzalez was not seriously tested the rest of the session, but he did participate fully which is a positive development after minicamp.S Mike Brown: The Patriots offseason pickup saw action with the starter-level defense in nickel packages, serving as the third safety alongside Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson. Its early, but this usage is a positive for Brown and suggests that he might be more than a special teamer for New England even though he did get beat by DeMario Douglas at one point.The Patriots will hold their second practice of training camp on Sunday. Gates will open at 9:15 p.m. ET with the session set to start an hour later.

The fact that he said every player is going to be like a new signing to him and that he said he was going to give the Reds' youth ranks a chance to shine are just two ways that he's got the fanbase on his side.He's also admitted that the Anfield outfit still need to sign a few players before he's even happy with the squad that he has at his disposal.All of these things are exactly what fans want to hear but, with the rumours being shared about the future of Liverpool and where some players stand, it's unclear whether this is all talk or if he actually means it.Indeed, the pre-season friendlies that they have lined up will help give fans a better idea of this and also share an insight into how Iraola is going to want his team to line-up and play.However, if he really wants to put his money where his mouth is, there's one player among the Reds' ranks who he can do this with right now.Federico Chiesa has been handed a second chance with Italy's national team now Andrea Pirlo is in chargeFederico Chiesa's situation is a bit of a weird one. The Italian was brought to Liverpool a couple of years ago for a bargain 10 million fee.Most people thought he'd be a perfect back-up for Mohamed Salah but, in reality, that was far from the truth.He's hardly featured for the Anfield outfit since his arrival with injuries and fitness being his main issues.In fact, his lack of form has even led to him being dropped from Italy's national team which will have no doubt knocked his confidence.However, after Gennaro Gattuso was relieved of his duties, the Italian federation have been searching for their next manager and, in the end, they settled on hiring Andrea Pirlo.This may seem like a bit of a strange hire due to his poor performances as a manager in previous jobs but, since he's one of Italy's greatest ever midfielders, it's a move that makes sense.And, luckily for Chiesa, the former Juventus captain absolutely loves him as a player which means that he could be given a new lease of life and potentially a regular starting role for his country once again.This is also good news for Liverpool as his confidence will be boosted which could end up playing in Iraola's favour, especially since his attacking line is fairly weak at the moment.Andoni Iraola needs to put some faith into Federico Chiesa at LiverpoolNow that Salah has exited Anfield, Liverpool have a huge void within their team that needs to be filled.The Egyptian King has been Liverpool's main attacking outlet for as long as anyone can remember so, him exiting has certainly left a few questions that need to be answered.Most fans thought that Yan Diomande would be the Reds' replacement for him but, since he wants to join Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are now also showing an interest in him, that move doesn't feel like it's going to happen at all.So, this begs the question, who's going to plug the gap left by Salah?Well, Chiesa could certainly do a job. The Italy international has scored 83 domestic goals throughout his career with Pirlo even praising the attacker for how good he is during one-on-one situations.If Pirlo trusts the Italy international to help lead Italy's attack, then there's no reason why he can't do the same for Liverpool.Indeed, he may not have found his feet at Anfield just yet but, if he's given regular playing time, it feels like he'd quickly get back to his best and potentially become one of their most important players.
