SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWiffen misses out on medal in 400m freestyleWiffen finished fifth in the 400m freestyle final [Getty Images]Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen missed out on a medal in the men's 400m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games as he finished fifth in the final at the Tollcross Swimming Centre.Wiffen, who won Olympic gold in the 800m freestyle and 1500m silver in Paris two years ago, qualified for the final after finishing third in his heat in his least favourite distance of 400m.After a steady start in which he looked on course for a bronze, the 25-year-old faded away in the last 50m and clocked a time of 3:47.22.His teammate, Olympic relay gold medallist Jack McMillan finished in seventh in a time of 3:49.18.Wiffen will have another chance at winning a first Commonwealth Games gold after picking up silver in 2022 when he goes in the men's 800m fastest heats at 20:37 BST on Monday.Lottie Cullen's time of 1:00.82 helped her advance to Sunday's final of the women's 100m backstroke as fourth fastest in her heat.Teammates Danielle Hill, who finished in 1:00.83 and Grace Davison, who recorded a time of 1:01.20 in their respective semi-finals both missed out on qualifying for the final.0 Comments 0 Shares 47 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRams make $25.4 million Ty Simpson decision as training camp beginsRams make $25.4 million Ty Simpson decision as training camp begins originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Rams eliminated their final training-camp distraction Saturday by reaching an agreement with first-round quarterback Ty Simpson.Simpson agreed to a fully guaranteed four-year rookie contract worth $25.4 million, according to NFL Networks Ian Rapoport. The deal includes a $14.94 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option that Los Angeles can exercise following the 2029 season. The former Alabama quarterback was the No. 13 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. He entered Saturday as the only unsigned first-round pick from his draft class, creating at least some concern that he could miss valuable practices at the beginning of camp. That will no longer be an issue. Simpson can now join the Rams as they begin full-team practices and start competing with Stetson Bennett for the backup job behind Matthew Stafford.Ty Simpson ends contract waitRookie contract negotiations are much more straightforward under the NFLs current wage scale because the length and overall value are largely determined by draft position. However, fully guaranteed money, payment schedules and offset language can still create delays.Rams first-round selection Ty Simpson has agreed to sign a fully-guaranteed four-year deal worth $25.4 million, per @RapSheet.The deal includes a fifth-year option as well as a $14.94 million signing bonus. pic.twitter.com/xUzuSuEdfI Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) July 25, 2026Simpon was one of the final two unsigned players from the entire 2026 draft class. New England Patriots second-round pick Gabe Jacas was the other player who had not finalized his deal when news of Simpsons agreement surfaced. The timing is important for Simpson. Rookie quarterbacks need every possible repetition during their first training camp, especially one who is learning Sean McVays offense and competing for an immediate role.Matthew Stafford will receive most of the first-team work when healthy, leaving Simpson and Bennett to split a limited number of backup snaps. Missing even a few practices could have allowed Bennett to establish a meaningful advantage. Instead, Simpson will be available as the real competition begins.Simpson battles Stetson Bennett for Rams backup jobLos Angeles did not use the 13th overall pick on Simpson merely to find a backup quarterback. The Rams believe he has the potential to become Staffords eventual successor. The organization understood it might not have another opportunity to select this high in the near future, especially after finishing 12-5 and advancing to the NFC Championship Game last season.Stafford remains firmly in control of the starting job. The reigning NFL MVP led the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns before signing a one-year, $55 million extension that keeps him under contract through the 2027 season. That gives the Rams time to develop Simpson without forcing him into the lineup. His first task will be beating out Bennett for the No. 2 spot.Bennett has received praise from McVay for the progress he made during the offseason. The former Georgia star also has more experience in the Rams system, giving him a legitimate opportunity to open the season as Staffords primary backup.Simpson brings first-round talent and a reputation for processing defenses quickly. His ability to learn a complicated playbook should fit well in McVays system, but he must become more decisive under pressure and improve his awareness of approaching pass rushers.Training camp and the preseason will give the coaching staff its first extended look at how Simpson handles those areas.Could Jimmy Garoppolo return to Los Angeles? The Rams may not be completely finished evaluating their quarterback room. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly considered retirement after spending the last two seasons as Staffords backup, but he remains open to playing in 2026 if the right opportunity becomes available.A return to Los Angeles could provide the Rams with proven insurance if neither Simpson nor Bennett looks ready to handle the backup role. Garoppolo already knows McVays offense and has extensive starting experience. Bringing him back, however, would reduce the practice and preseason opportunities available to Simpson.Los Angeles would prefer for its first-round pick to prove he can handle the QB2 job immediately, even if Staffords presence gives Simpson time before he is asked to become the franchises starter. The contract delay briefly threatened to complicate that development plan. Simpsons new $25.4 million agreement ensures he can report to work without losing any more time. Now the paperwork is finished, the money is guaranteed and the Rams can begin finding out whether their first-round quarterback is ready to become Staffords top backup.More NFL news:49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan: car accident detailsOne Broncos is among the 'most penalized players' in the NFLBengals' Dexter Lawrence could hold the key for Joe Burrow in 20260 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhen will Shohei Ohtani pitch again? Latest on Dodgers two-way starLeft knee irritation has kept Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani from pitching since July 3. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts certainly won't be rushing him back to the mound. While speaking to reporters before Friday's 4-2 win over the New York Mets, Roberts shut down any notion of Ohtani returning to the rotation next week."I feel very good that it won't be next week," Roberts said. "Every player wants to get back out there and do what they do. But I think he understands it's not about July, it's about October. So we've already taken a lot of time to get him back to full health, so we're not going to start earlier than we need to."Ohtani's knee doesn't bother him while hitting, so he's remained a fixture atop the Dodgers' batting order. This season he's batting .286 with 22 home runs, 61 RBI and a .920 OPS. Over 14 starts as a pitcher, he's 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP.When will Shohei Ohtani pitch again? It's unclear. Roberts said last weekend it'd be "some time" until another Ohtani start. The four-time MVP threw roughly 30 pitches off a mound Wednesday and is expected to throw another bullpen Saturday, according to the Associated Press. This article originally appeared on For The Win: When will Shohei Ohtani pitch again? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHowe unsure about Bruno Guimaraes future amid Arsenal linksHowe unsure about Bruno Guimaraes future amid Arsenal linksEddie Howe has admitted that he is unsure about Bruno Guimaraes future at Newcastle United amid interest from Arsenal. The Gunners are reportedly willing to pay around 60 million to sign the midfielder in the summer transfer window, though the Magpies are said to want at least 75 million. Sky Sports News claim that Guimaraes has told the Tyneside outfit that he wants to leave St. James Park so that he can join Arsenal. The report adds that the Premier League champions are yet to make direct contact with Newcastle, instead exploring the conditions of a potential deal through intermediaries. Howe unsure about Bruno Guimaraes future amid Arsenal linksHowe says he does not know whether Guimaraes, who has not yet linked up with the squad for pre-season after competing at the FIFA World Cup, will remain at Newcastle. Ive spoken to Bruno before, during and after the World Cup, he said. We have had some really good conversations. Hes just a fantastic person.I dont know whats going to happen with his future, thats for other people to speculate about. Theres conversations Im not part of. The situation has echoes of last years transfer saga involving Alexander Isak, who pushed for a move to Liverpool last summer. Newcastle refused to budge before relenting on the final day of the window, selling the Swedish striker to the Reds for a record-breaking 125 million fee. I dont think its fair to compare, Howe added. Youve got to look at it in its own right.Hes captain of our club and been an unbelievable player, through the whole time we have worked together. I speak on behalf of everyone at the club, we absolutely love him and of course everyone would love him to stay.Hes due back in the 31st, and theres nothing to say he wont be back. Guimaraes has been a key player for Newcastle since moving to the north east from Lyon for 40 million in 2022. The 28-year-old, who has registered 30 goals and 25 assists in 153 Premier League appearances, has a contract with the club until 2028.Howe unsure about Bruno Guimaraes future amid Arsenal linksEddie Howe has admitted that he is unsure about Bruno Guimaraes future at Newcastle United amid interest from Arsenal. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeigh keep rolling with win over rivals WarringtonLeigh have reached the Super League play-offs in each of the last three seasons since promotion [SWPix]Betfred Super LeagueLeigh (16) 28Tries: Armstrong, Lam, Senior, Ofahengaue, Hanley Goals: Cook 4Warrington (6) 12Tries: Sipley, Hopoate Goals: Irwin 2Leigh Leopards made it five successive victories as they out-muscled fellow play-off contenders Warrington Wolves.Victory moved Leigh up one place to fifth, above last year's champions Hull KR, and now level on points with the Wolves, who suffered a third defeat in four matches this month.Early tries from David Armstrong and Lachlan Lam gave the Leopards control and they never really relinquished it.Toafofoa Sipley crossed for Warrington but further tries from Innes Senior, Joe Ofahengaue and Umyla Hanley either side of the break moved the hosts out of sight before a late consolation for Albert Hopoate. And with Leigh still having five of their last seven games to play at home, they do not look like going away in the race for the top six.Since losing to Warrington in successive weeks in April in Super League and the Challenge Cup, the Leopards had won 10 out of 12 games, including victory over the Wire at Magic Weekend three weeks ago and they were out of the traps strongly.Lam's pass found Armstrong hitting the line well from full-back as he sold a dummy and found a gap to the tryline. The scrum-half was then the recipient of fine play, supporting Umyla Hanley after he had broken through the defence to run under the posts. The Wolves got themselves on the scoreboard thanks to the might of Sipley as three defenders could not keep out the Niue prop at close range. However, Leigh made it a two-score game again right on half-time as Senior finished off in the left corner after more good work in the line from the half-backs.The second period saw no quarter given and both sides lost a player to the sin-bin in the early stages. Super League's record try scorer Josh Charnley was penalised for head contact on Toby King, while Warrington scrum-half Leon Hayes joined him for a dangerous tackle on Owen Trout. And with emotions running high, Ofahengaue profited as sheer brute force saw him force his way over.Moments later, the contest was settled as Hanley scored a try that legendary father Ellery would have been proud of as a combination of strength, footwork and handling skills took him past a clutch of defenders in a small space. With their defence relishing the battle, it was a good tune-up for the visit of neighbours Wigan Warriors on Friday (20:00).Hopoate's try came too late in this one to make any difference for Warrington and they will have to regroup ahead of their trip to Castleford Tigers the following day to regain momentum in the play-off battle.Leigh: Armstrong; Senior, Hughes, Hanley, Charnley; Cook, Lam; Ofahengaue, Horne, Liu, Halton, Trout, Brogan.Interchanges: Vaalepu, Davis, Brown, Ipape.Sin-bin: Charnley (49)Warrington: Webster; Hopoate, Smith, King, Ashton; Irwin, Hayes; Byrne, Walker, Thomas, Holroyd, Harrison, Currie.Interchanges: Sipley, Crowther, Philbin, Bentley.Sin-bin: Hayes (52)Referee: Marcus Griffiths.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews
