A $20 trade on our heaviest favorite, the Los Angeles Dodgers, yields a modest $12.66 profit. On the flip side, putting that same $20 on a live underdog like the New York Mets returns a sweet $26.40 profit if they pull off the home upset. When I'm handicapping that LAD @ NYM matchup, the underlying stats point heavily to the Dodgers. Los Angeles is crushing the ball with a .260 average and .774 team OPS, making New York's .233 average and .686 OPS look anemic. Plus, the Dodgers get a massive narrative boost: Shohei Ohtani just threw a \~30-pitch bullpen and is expected to be available for this series. With LA's pitching staff sporting a 3.53 ERA and 1.13 WHIP compared to the Mets' 4.23 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, backing the Dodgers looks like a rock-solid play.In the ATL @ BAL game, keep an eye on the Braves. Ronald Acua Jr. is a potential activation candidate from the injured list and could return to the lineup today, adding instant firepower to Atlanta's roster.Steps for Using the Polymarket Promo CodeGetting started and locking in this bonus is a breeze. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeBron James and the 10 best 'last acts' of an NBA careerIf we're talking "last acts" of an NBA career, it is hard to top Bill Russell, who led the Boston Celtics as player-coach to Game 7 of the 1969 NBA Finals, defeating the rival Los Angeles Lakers for an 11th championship in 13 seasons. And he retired at age 34.LeBron James will presumably pen the final chapter of the most narrative-driven career in sports history, as the 41-year-old will sign with the Philadelphia 76ers?Yeah, he's jumping teams again. To another high-powered outfit, which now boasts James, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid. We can debate what that will mean for his legacy until the end of time (if his career ever ends by then), but there is no doubt that it will be one of the great last acts of an NBA career. He is, after all, still an All-Star, still capable of contributing to a championship team, and anything remotely close to either of those things might make his the greatest. What are the greatest last acts of an NBA career? Funny you should ask. We list them here, defining a last act as any end-of-career move by a Hall of Famer (or at least anyone since the 1976 NBA-ABA merger, when free agency officially started).(Grant Thomas/Yahoo Sports Illustration)Ray Allen, Miami Heat (2012-14)Allen left the Boston Celtics for the rival Heat in 2012, creating a rift with Kevin Garnett and company, but it was the right choice for his career at ages 37 and 38. One of the greatest shooters in league history naturally became an elite role player, averaging 10.3 points on 40% shooting from distance. He essentially posted the same statistics in the playoffs, where the Heat made consecutive trips to the NBA Finals in his two seasons there, winning the 2013 title thanks to Allen's heroics.Tracy McGrady, San Antonio Spurs (2013)If not for Ray Allen's series-saving 3-pointer in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals, T-Mac would have gotten his ring. At age 33, when his knees were shot, he signed a rest-of-year contract with the Spurs on the eve of the final day of the 2012-13 regular season. He only played garbage time in six playoff games, including two games of the Finals. I'm not sure he belongs on this list, but, man, he came this close to a perfect ending.Karl Malone, Los Angeles Lakers (2003-04)Malone played just one season for the Lakers at age 40, and it ended in a feud with Kobe Bryant, but he did make the 2004 NBA Finals, before the Detroit Pistons ran an old team out of the gym. He averaged a 13-9-4 in the regular season and was limited to 42 games by an MCL injury in his right knee, which required surgery at season's end. But he returned to start 21 of the Lakers' 22 playoff games en route to the Finals.Michael Jordan, Washington Wizards (2001-03)We think of Jordan on the Wizards as Hakeem Olajuwon on the Toronto Raptors or Patrick Ewing on the Orlando Magic, but he was better than that, even if the team was terrible. In two seasons in Washington at ages 38 and 39, Jordan averaged a 21-6-4 and made two All-Star appearances (albeit mostly on name recognition). He did not make the playoffs, but Jordan capped his career with 82 games on a bum knee.Michael Jordan scored 20 ppg in his last NBA season in 2002-03. (Photo by G Fiume/Getty Images)G Fiume via Getty ImagesDwight Howard, Los Angeles Lakers (2019-20)Yes, Howard played two more seasons afterward one behind Joel Embiid on the Philadelphia 76ers and another back on the Lakers but his age-34 season was the cherry on top of a Hall of Fame career. He started seven playoff games and averaged a double-double per 36 minutes as a role player for the 2020 champion Lakers. For all the criticism of his career, he got his ring, and nobody can take that away from him.Gary Payton, Miami Heat (2005-07)We thought the 2004 Lakers, with Malone, were Payton's last best chance at a title, but he found his way in his final two seasons to Miami, where Dwyane Wade's rise and Shaquille O'Neal's arrival gave him one more shot at a ring. And Payton seized it at age 37, averaging 6.6 points in 25.6 minutes a night, mostly off the bench, playing that role to great effect in 23 playoff games on the Heat's run to the 2006 title. He made a go-ahead basket late in their Game 5 overtime win over the Dallas Mavericks.Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks (2008-12)Granted, Kidd played one more season on the New York Knicks, but this was his real swan song four-plus seasons in Dallas from ages 34-38. He made his final All-Star team in 2010, averaging a 10-6-9 on 42/43/81 shooting splits, and then won the title in 2011, starting all 21 playoff games and playing 35.4 minutes a night. There are few, if any, better transitions than Kidd's from all-time great into championship role player.Clyde Drexler, Houston Rockets (1995-98)From ages 32-25 (back when players retired in their mid-30s), in four-plus seasons for the Rockets, Drexler averaged a 19-6-5 on 45/34/79 shooting splits, made two All-Star appearances and won the 1995 NBA championship as Houston's second-best player behind Hakeem Olajuwon. Drexler reached another Western Conference finals in 1997, as Charles Barkley was making his less climactic final act beside him.Bill Walton, Boston Celtics (1985-87)Playing on a broken-down body, Walton had one more chance at basketball life in Boston, where he won a title at age 33 and reached the NBA Finals at age 34. He won Sixth Man of the Year honors on the 1985-86 Celtics, one of the great teams in history, averaging 7.6 points in 19.3 minutes a night. More than that, though, he and Larry Bird played some of the most beautiful basketball the game has ever seen.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMets place Juan Soto on IL with calf strain in brutal blow to sinking seasonMets place Juan Soto on IL with calf strain in brutal blow to sinking season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Mets disappointing 2026 season took another painful turn Saturday. The Mets placed star outfielder Juan Soto on the injured list with a left calf strain, the team announced. Soto exited Friday nights 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers after the injury continued bothering him.MLB insider Jon Heyman confirmed the move Saturday.Soto goes on the IL with a left calf strain, Mets announce, Heyman wrote. The Mets did not immediately provide a firm timetable for Sotos return. However, the injury will keep their best hitter out of the lineup as the organization approaches the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline with a 43-61 record.Juan Soto injury adds to Mets nightmare seasonSoto had been dealing with discomfort in his left calf for approximately a week. New York kept him out of Wednesdays game against the Milwaukee Brewers in an attempt to give the injury time to improve. Soto returned Friday as the Mets designated hitter and walked in both of his plate appearances against the Dodgers.Soto goes on the IL with a left calf strain, Mets announce Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) July 25, 2026He appeared to have difficulty running during a double play in the third inning. Jorge Polanco eventually pinch-hit for him in the sixth. Interim manager Andy Green acknowledged after the loss that the persistent nature of the injury was concerning. This has nagged him for a week, Green said. Anytime you get an image, youre concerned. The left calf strain is Sotos latest physical setback during an injury-filled second season in New York.Soto missed approximately three weeks in April after suffering a strain in his right calf. He has also dealt with back soreness and cramping in his left calf.Despite those issues, Soto has easily been the Mets most productive offensive player. The 27-year-old is batting .283 with 21 home runs, 52 RBIs and a .947 OPS through 84 games. He leads New York in batting average, home runs, RBIs and on-base percentage.Removing that production from an already struggling offense creates a massive problem.Mets lose best hitter before MLB trade deadlineNew York entered Saturday ranked 27th in MLB with 421 runs scored. The Mets were also 26th in batting average, 28th in on-base percentage and 25th in slugging percentage. Those numbers helped explain how a team with enormous financial commitments fell to the bottom of the National League East. The Mets are 18.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves and 9.5 games out of third place. Fridays loss dropped them 18 games below .500 and strengthened expectations that president of baseball operations David Stearns will sell at the trade deadline. Several veterans, including pitcher Clay Holmes, have already surfaced as potential trade candidates.Sotos injury will not change the organizations long-term plans for him. He remains the face of the franchise after signing a record 15-year, $765 million contract before the 2025 season. It could, however, make the Mets even less competitive during the final days before the deadline.New York has dropped two consecutive games and opened its weekend series against the Dodgers with only four hits. Luis Robert Jr. and Francisco Alvarez accounted for the teams only runs with solo home runs. Without Soto, Green will likely rely on Robert, Carson Benge, Tyrone Taylor and A.J. Ewing for increased outfield responsibilities.MORE:Paul Goldschmidt makes Yankees history with lone swing in 1-0 winSoto dealing with second calf strain of 2026The fact that Soto has now injured both calves is another reason for the Mets to proceed cautiously. His first calf strain occurred while running the bases in early April. New York initially hoped he could avoid the injured list, but imaging revealed enough damage to sideline him for multiple weeks. This latest injury developed gradually rather than on one obvious play. The Mets attempted to manage it with a day off before returning Soto to the lineup as a designated hitter, but that was not enough to prevent an IL stint. New York has little reason to rush its most valuable player back.Any realistic postseason hopes have disappeared, and Soto is in only the second season of his massive long-term contract. Allowing the calf to heal completely is far more important than bringing him back for a team buried in the standings. The Mets entered 2026 believing Soto would anchor a championship contender. Instead, they are preparing to sell at the deadline while their best player heads back to the injured list. For a season already filled with disappointment, Sotos left calf strain represents another significant blow.More MLB news:Salvador Perez makes heartfelt plea after fan arrested retrieving historic home runRed Sox winning streak ends at 15, but historic run changes everything in BostonPirates-Yankees benches clear after heated exchange in eighth inningHow Aaron Judge is the real focus of the Yankees' trade deadline plansCC Sabathia's son gets drafted by one of his former teams0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTim David questions Pakistan bowler Usman Tariq's bowling action, gestures 'no-ball' after dismissalAustralia batter Tim David became the latest batter to question Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq's bowling action after being dismissed by him during a men's Hundred match on Friday.David, playing for Trent Rockets against Birmingham Phoenix, edged a full delivery outside off stump to the wicketkeeper. After the dismissal, he appeared to suggest to the umpire that the delivery should have been called a no-ball, seemingly because of Tariq's bowling action. David also instinctively signalled for a review before deciding against it. The umpire did not uphold the appeal, and David walked off.According to MCC Law 21.2, a delivery is fair if the ball is not thrown. The law states that once the bowler's arm reaches shoulder level during the delivery swing, the elbow must not be partially or completely straightened before the ball leaves the hand. The striker's-end umpire has the primary responsibility for judging whether a delivery is fair, although the bowler's-end umpire can also call a no-ball if they believe the ball has been thrown. CallMeSheri1_ (@CallMeSheri1_) David appeared to be indicating that Tariq's action did not comply with the law and should have resulted in a no-ball.Tariq's bowling action has remained under scrutiny for some time. During the 2024 Pakistan Super League, umpires Asif Yaqoob and Richard Illingworth reported him for a suspect bowling action to the match referee. His action was reported again by the on-field umpires during the 2025 PSL.Earlier this year, Australia all-rounder Cameron Green also appeared to question Tariq's action during the second T20I against Pakistan. After being dismissed by the spinner, Green mimicked a baseball-style throwing motion, referring to Tariq's bowling action.Despite the criticism on the field and the discussion around his action, Usman Tariq has been cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC).0 Comments 0 Shares 64 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJohn Lynch on Brandon Aiyuk: We're focused on players that are hereWide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has had a lot to say this offseason about his desire to play for the Commanders, but the 49ers have not released him and General Manager John Lynch did not make it sound like that is going to happen in the immediate future when he spoke to reporters from the team's training camp on Saturday. Aiyuk did not play at all last season and the 49ers placed him on the reserve/left squad list in December after voiding the remaining guarantees on his contract earlier in the year. That move came because Aiyuk did not rehab a knee injury with the team and he has said that he won't move for reinstatement because he refuses to do "any business" with the club.Doing so would force the 49ers to make a decision about cutting him loose, but the status quo leaves the 49ers with little reason to make a move and Lynch said that he's going to keep his attention on players that are still with the team. Brandon is on a left squad designation," Lynch said. "As such, hes not on our 90-man roster. I, personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players that are here. I dont have anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well. The 49ers play the Commanders in Week 6, but it doesn't look like Aiyuk will be playing for anybody in that contest or any other unless he decides on a different course of action in the near future.0 Comments 0 Shares 65 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexas Tech Red Raiders name starting quarterback for 2026The Texas Tech Red Raiders have officially named their starting quarterback after the departure of Brendan Sorsby. They've named Will Hammond the starter, Texas Tech's X account announced. The Red Raiders were dealt a bad hand with Sorsby becoming ineligible to play due to placing bets on college football games. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech with draft pedigree after a solid season with the Cincinnati Bearcats. However, he had his eligibility revoked after an investigation found that he had placed more than 1,000 bets on multiple sporting events, including those he played in. He wagered over $6,000 on other college football games, placing over $90,000 in bets in total, and he even admitted to the wrongdoing. Originally, the NCAA ruled Sorsby eligible to play, much to the chagrin of several teams, but after a while, Texas Tech and Sorsby parted ways. That paved the way for Hammond to start this season.Hammond has played sparingly with the Red Raiders. Through 12 games, Hammond has 1,151 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. He came in for an injured Behren Morton midway through the Utah Utes game on Sept. 20 this past season.Contact/Follow @College_Wire on X and @College_Wires on Threads. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNewcastle United preparing offer for Fikayo TomoriNewcastle United preparing offer for Fikayo TomoriNewcastle United have stepped up their evaluation of AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori and are preparing a formal proposal to bring him back to the Premier League, according to Calciomercato. Eddie Howe is at St James Park.Dubbed a good player with a lot of experience, Tomori has long been on Eddie Howes defensive recruitment list. Despite a challenging domestic campaign last season, in which Milan finished fifth and missed out on Champions League football on the final day, Newcastle have identified the 28-year-old as a key defensive target.Tomori moved from West London to Lombardy in January 2021, initially joining Milan on loan before making the move permanent. Over his six years in Serie A, he established himself as a key figure in Milans defence, helping guide the club to a Scudetto title and gaining significant Champions League experience. However, following the acquisition of Mario Gila, the Rossoneri are open to reasonable offers for the Englishman, whose contract is entering its final stretch with a June 2027 expiry date. Tomori is understood to view a return to English football as an appealing next step in his career, provided the sporting project offers regular starting opportunities.AC Milan are reportedly holding out for a financial package closer to 20 million, while Newcastle are aiming to complete a deal for around 15m.Negotiations between the clubs are expected to continue over the coming days.Tomori played the first 45 minutes of Milans 2-2 friendly draw against Celtic on Saturday but could be left out of Wednesdays friendly against Inter Milan as speculation over his future intensifies.0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDo the Rams actually need to sign another wide receiver?INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 2: Jordan Whittington #88 of the Los Angeles Rams and Davante Adams #17 get set during the first quarter of an NFL football game against the New Orleans Saints at SoFi Stadium on November 02, 2025 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Brooke Sutton/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesIf you subscribe to The Athletic and were shocked at what you read this morning in Daniel Poppers Best Fits column about free agent wide receivers, you werent alone. As TSTs Danny Stone pointed out in this mornings Random Ramsdom, Popper wrote that the Rams are the best fit for former San Francisco 49er and, most recently, Washington Commander Deebo Samuel. Not only was that a surprising match, but it doesnt jive with what the Rams are apparently planning for at wide receiver this season.Samuel has been a productive player in the past, of course, even earing a first-team All-Pro nod in 2021. But that was five years ago now, and the reputation that precedes Samuel is far greater than his actual impact on the field now. He wasnt terrible for Washington last season, posting 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns, but hes now another year older and still has the same issues hes always had, just with further diminished speed and athleticism. This is a player that has never been a strong man-coverage beater and thus has always needed his play callers to manufacture touches for him. ESPNs Receiver Score metrics arent foolproof by any means and the stats do include some noise, but their 2025 grading does paint at least a broad picture of who Samuel is right now. Who is that? Its a player who tied for 97th out of 110 graded wide receivers in open score, or how often a receiver is in position to make a catch even if theyre not targeted. It doesnt feel like the juice is worth the squeeze for a Rams team that already has one of the best offenses in the NFL and doesnt need to add more gimmicks to create explosives, move the ball consistently or score. It would be one thing to take a flier is Los Angeles had a paltry assortment of weapons, but thats clearly not the case, and its not worth developing more hyper-specific touches for what could be the Rams sixth option.Peyton Manning was absolutely disgusted about a pass hitting Deebo Samuel in the facemask and turning into an interception. #NFL#MNFpic.twitter.com/HpvO6qFQp5 Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) October 28, 2025Overall, the Rams have made it obvious so far that theyre content with the group they have at wide receiver. Ty Simpsons finally signed rookie deal eats into some of their available cap space and an Aaron Donaald return would obviously swallow most of whats left. But there are enough options out there who wouldnt cost an arm and a leg that if L.A. had wanted to add another receiver at some point this offseason, it could have. This roster has a clear hierarchy both in terms of pass catchers and offensive contributors in general, and its hard to see a transformative role opening for anyone that Les Snead could go out and sign today. Puka Nacua is one of the five best receivers in the NFL, and Davante Adams is a potential Hall of Famer who is still easily among the best WR2s in the league. Colby Parkinson is going to be on the field a ton at tight end, and plenty of other players in that position group will get run in heavier personnel packages (such as the recently re-signed Tyler Higbee or second-round pick Max Klare). You know the Rams are going to run the ball and run it effectively. Does a guy like Samuel slot in at the back of that pack and actually get you closer to a championship? Or Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, Zay Jones or any other veteran wide receiver still looking for a home, for that matter.Jordan Whittington, meanwhile, is already in place and a perfectly suitable option as the No. 3 wide receiver, given what the Rams need out of that spot. Hes a strong blocker and thats vital to the success of this offense, and its not like hes an unplayable pass catcher, given his 62% career success rate (according to Pro-Football-References system) and the 41% of his targets that become first downs or touchdowns (all first downs in his case, to be fair). Thats just shy of Diggs career rate and above that of Samuel. He isnt a superstar and almost certainly wont be given the guys in front of him, but his tangible and intangible traits make him a natural fit for this position group.Would it be nice to have a third elite receiver that didnt need to get the ball constantly? Sure, who wouldnt want that? But while thats been a need or a personnel target some analysts around the NFL have pushed for the Rams all offseason, its simply not an important need, and the guy theyve already got is more that fit for the role.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews
