Robbed of their most explosive physical attributes, they try to compensate with wisdom and capacity for suffering. With legs dulled, theyre forced into harsh exchanges they were too defensively sound to allow in their primes. Fans get to enjoy the last gasps of greatness from their favorite fighters, and sportswriters get an excuse to describe them as weathered veterans. Afterwards, maybe one or both of them walks into the sunset.Related: Tim Tszyu eyes world title tilt after beating Errol Spence Jr in 12-round epicErrol Spence, one of the best boxers of his generation, claimed hell do just that after losing a unanimous decision to Tim Tszyu on Sunday in Sydney. After winning the first 28 fights of his career and contributing to ear-splitting hype for a purportedly 50-50 welterweight fight with Terence Crawford, Spence absorbed a surgical, brutal beating from Crawford that showed the two were never really on the same level. As Crawford went on to win a title at junior middleweight and astonishingly defeat the legendary Saul Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight, Spence took three years off before returning to face Tszyu at age 36. Believe that hes really retired at your peril; if the annihilation he suffered at Crawfords hands wasnt enough to deter him from boxing again, his initially competitive, eventually one-sided, relatively untraumatic loss to Tszyu may not move the needle either.Tszyu is one of a few men who might know how Spence felt after that Crawford fight. In 2024, a then-unbeaten Tszyu fought late replacement Sebastian Fundora for the chance to become a unified junior middleweight champion. Tszyu looked sharp and mean and broke Fundoras nose inside two rounds. In a stroke of freak misfortune, he then sliced his forehead open on the end of one of Fundoras angular elbows. Tszyu fought the remaining 10 rounds with a flowing sheet of blood often impairing his vision or blinding him entirely, and lost the fight.Next, Tszyu fought unheralded destroyer Bakhram Murtazaliev with such blind aggression he walked into a beating every bit as concussive as the one Crawford handed Spence, condensed into three rounds instead of nine. After a tune-up, Tszyu took a rematch with an improved Fundora and took another violent loss. Tszyu recently changed his nickname from the Soul Taker to the Phoenix, surely among the most obvious rebrands in history. Hed left no shortage of ashes to rise from. This fight was billed as USA v AUS, sold alongside a barren undercard for an appalling $79.99 on DAZN and Prime Video, but was most magnetic as a battle of broken soldiers.Each man had his moments in the first five rounds, but the opening act evoked more of a vacance than a feeling. In his prime, Spence had boundless energy. Hed keep his jab pumping constantly in the opponents face, and when they had to pause their counterfire hed step in with a big overhand left. Eventually, his opponents broke down under the steady onslaught. No one punch would do as much damage as his presence.In Sydney, that pressure was gone. Spence mostly fought in retreat, cannily sneaking in straight lefts and body shots. Commentators Paulie Malignaggi and Shawn Porter another former Spence opponent, who, like Crawford, arrived at retirement before Spence identified Spences iffy balance seconds into the fight. He regularly overbalanced over his front foot, leaving his chin hanging in an ocean of space. It was too easy to picture Crawford hammering it with a precise, punishing counterpunch.Luckily for Spence, Tszyu was mostly too stiff and slow to emulate Crawford. His calling card in his prime was his bloodlust, strong enough to quiet any fear of bleeding himself. He once hit Brian Mendoza with three successive uppercuts so animalistic its a wonder Mendoza didnt run out of the ring in fear. But that version of Tszyu was gone, too. He stalked Spence, throwing isolated right hands that caught and jolted Spence but little else. After five rounds, Spence began to fade. He committed more of his energy to moving than throwing his own, made more difficult by Tszyu beginning to dig vicious shots into his stomach.Buoyed up by a pep talk from coach and former boxer Jeff Fenech, Tszyu dominated a larger and larger share of the rounds. In the 12th, he hit Spence with a punch so forceful that the American caromed off the ropes and almost back to the center of the ring. But Tszyu didnt seem especially interested in pressing his advantage. He had a safe lead, but it was hard not to see the ghosts of Murtazaliev.Spence looked so weary in the corner before the final round that he was recognizable even to somebody who will never throw a punch in their life as a man who wanted this night to be over. I thought of a moment from the end of an interview Spence did with Andre Ward last month. Ward asked Spence why he was still fighting.Uh, Spence said, scratching his head. Let me see. He didnt pause for long, and eventually gave an answer, but even his momentary uncertainty felt telling. Tszyu fighting after Murtazaliev and Spence fighting after Crawford is illustrative of the dependent relationship many boxers have with this fatal sport; not being fully committed in that relationship only invites disaster.During fight week, Tszyu declared, Im coming for every limb especially that retina, referring to Spence injuring his eye in 2021. The comment irked Spence into not shaking hands with Tszyu before the fight. Afterwards, they shook hands, hugged, and posed for a picture together. There wasnt warmth, exactly Tszyu was blustery in his postfight interview, and didnt show anything that figured to impress the once great Spence but maybe some mutual understanding. What these broken soldiers were fighting for wasnt so much the merits of a win over the other but the opportunity to break themselves anew against a superior opponent. If only both of them could have lost.

Absolutely. Maybe its even likely. But it is a cool way to dive into the minds of some of these guys who also wake up and think about this beautiful game 24/7/365.So, lets dive into these predictions, and more importantly, what Bailey said about the Atlanta Falcons.1) Bijan Robinson ranks third in rushing yards, falls out of top five (again) in rushing TDsAfter discussing 29 other topics that dont necessarily affect the Falcons, Bailey lists out his top five league leaders in 10 different categories, including rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. In rushing yards, Robinson slots in at third with 1,427 yards, behind only James Cook (1,493) and Jahmyr Gibbs (1,648).This could be a sore spot for Falcons fans, as the battle of which running back is more valuable continues to rage on even into this season, as both are up for extensions and neither is willing to blink first to get the lesser amount of the two backs.That being said, neither of the two 2023 first-round picks shows up on the rushing touchdowns list as new Kansas City Chief Kenneth Walker takes the crown with 15 scores. The Broncos Javonte Williams and Ravens Derrick Henry tied for fourth with 12.2) Drake London is not a top-five producer in receptions, receiving yards nor receiving touchdownsI think this is more a statement on how poor the Falcons quarterback situation may get in 2026; more on that to come, but the newly minted number-one receiver for Atlanta didnt breach the top five in receptions. Cincinnati Bengals JaMarr Chase snatches the triple crown in this exercise, leading in receptions (128), yards (1,693) and touchdowns (20). A wild prediction since weve never had a receiver hit 125+ receptions, 1600 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns.The closest weve gotten is our latest triple-crown recipients: Chase in 2024 (127, 1708, 17), Cooper Kupp in 2021 (145, 1947, 16) and the G.O.A.T. Jerry Rice in 1995 (122, 1848, 15).All this could mean is that London is right there, sitting around 100 receptions and 1200 yards again, as he did in 2024, especially with the more run-heavy approach we expect Kevin Stefanski to deploy. Or, we could be looking at another year of wasted Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson routes as the search for a franchise quarterback continues.But were not getting into that yet; first, we have a terrible prediction to divulge. 3) The Aints win the NFC SouthListen, call it what you want: Hype around the unknown that is Tyler Shough, the buzz around their young head coach, Kellen Moore, the way that New Orleans defense had the fourth-best defense in EPA/play after their Week 12 bye last season. Still, the hype machine surrounding that team in the bayou has been loud, and only getting louder.Another team Im very bullish on is the New Orleans Saints. The additions theyve made this offseason should have their fans excited. Jordyn Tyson taken in the first round to complement Chris Olave, Travis Etienne coming off the best season of his career and now being paired with Alvin Kamara, David Edwards at guard, cornerback Martin Emerson on a cheap deal. This is a team that won four of its last five games in 2025, and Tyler Shough showed real progress in that stretch they win a wide open division and host a playoff game for the first time since 2020.It sickens me that they may be getting better as the Falcons potentially bottom out in an attempt to find themselves in the NFL landscape. But it has been amazing watching them take their medicine after they continuously tried to beat the salary cap, and hopefully that will continue. In this scenario, the Falcons will be bitter about missing the opportunity to stomp on the Saints more while theyre down, but thats all about to change with the fourth and final bit of this exercise for the Falconsand its a doozy.4) Falcons trade for CJ StroudThe Falcons have a really nice collection of talent on offense, with Bijan Robinson being who many believe is the top running back in the NFL, and Drake London is one of the games finest receivers. Unfortunately, they have yet to find a quarterback who they can lean on, and that will continue to be the case in 2026 with Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix. Atlanta trades for Stroud, who easily becomes the best quarterback Kevin Stefanski has had since Baker MayfieldImmediately, what comes to mind is what it would cost to obtain a 26-year-old quarterback who was the clear Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023.If the Texans believe that they can find a better solution to the position in the draft, especially with the window currently afforded by their impressive defense, there is a chance they could move on from Stroud, but what would the cost be?For the Texans to fall short of their goals, probably an AFC Championship game appearance, it would more than likely fall on Stroud not being up to the task for the second year in a row.The price for a quarterback that has shown the flashes that Stroud has at 26 probably begins with three first-round draft picks, even with his recent struggles. I cant see Ian Cunningham getting rid of that kind of capital, even if Stroud would be an intriguing addition.

CHICAGO (AP) Caitlin Clark had a memorable weekend that started with meeting former President Barack Obama and ended with a stellar effort in her first traditional All-Star Game.In between were sponsor events with Nike, State Farm and Wilson that had hundreds of fans of all ages and genders many wearing her No. 22 jersey lined up for hours, hoping to get a high-five, autograph or even just a glimpse of the Indiana Fever star. Im excited this weekend is packed with a lot of stuff, Clark said at the Wilson event to unveil her new line of basketballs. I never want to take for granted (All-Star weekend)."This was Clarks first traditional All-Star Game; she missed last year's in Indianapolis because she was injured. Her rookie season in 2024 featured a highly competitive game in which the U.S. Olympic team played the WNBA All-Stars. There was added tension for that one because many felt Clark should have been on the Olympic squad for Paris.Any time you get to put on a uniform and play an All-Star Game is really special. It's really a unique experience for myself as I never really got to play in a true All-Star Game (before), Clark said.On Saturday, she got involved quickly, much to the delight of the record All-Star crowd of 19,783 at the United Center. Clark scored her team's first eight points, getting a steal for a layup and then hitting one of her signature deep 3-pointers. The league got rid of it this year to Clark's dismay.Despite not having the opportunity for the bonus point, Clark had fun Saturday helping her team to the 129-122 win, taking Obama's words in their conversation to heart when he told her don't lose the joy."Clark admitted her hands were sweaty and clammy when she met Obama. She asked for a photo with him a question that's posed to her countless times a day.After meeting Obama, Clark's day was full of sponsor activities. She went to WNBA Live, a fanfest where many of the league's sponsors having exhibits. She participated in a musical chairs shooting game at the State Farm exhibit, which had hundreds of fans watching.Soon after she was acting as a hype woman for a few lucky girls who competed in a similar contest. The winner got a pair of Clark's shoes.
