It was the sound of the end of 75 years of hurt and heartbreak, of near-misses and misplaced hope.After all that time, Mayo had finally won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship - a fourth in their history, but one three-quarters of a century in the making.The players sunk to their knees on the hallowed turf, fully aware of what they had just accomplished. Not only had their dethroned Kerry, the favourites to win consecutive All-Ireland titles and the sport's most decorated team, but they had ended the so-called 'Mayo Curse', which had lingered over the county since 1951.It was a day of history, a day of ecstasy and, to some degree, a day of relief.With tears in his eyes, former Mayo defender Padraig O'Hora - working as a pundit for the BBC - said he "can't put it into words"."Thousands upon thousands of people have dreamed of this day, I can't believe it's here," he said."There are people who have waited their whole lives for this day."Hats off to the lads on the field, it is their day, but if you have green and red blood it belongs to you, young and old. In a world still reeling from the effects of the Second World War, Harry S Truman was US president as Cold War tensions started to rise, while Winston Churchill was Prime Minister.Culturally, Nat King Cole and BB King were some of the biggest music artists, while Alice in Wonderland and A Streetcar Named Desire were on the big screen. That year, Mayo lifted the Sam Maguire Cup - the iconic trophy presented to the team that wins the All-Ireland SFC - for the third time, but it was the celebrations after that caused a stir.As is so often the case, the players enjoyed themselves. But on their way home they passed a funeral in the village of Foxford, where a local priest reportedly accused the Mayo team of not showing respect.Instead of stopping and switching off their engine, as would have been the custom in rural Ireland at the time, the Mayo party continued.In return, the - legend has it - priest placed a curse on Mayo, saying they would never win another All-Ireland while any of the players on the panel were still alive. It has never been established if the event actually occurred, but after 11 All-Ireland finals came, went and ended in defeat, the myth of the curse grew.Just two weeks after their previous final defeat by Tyrone in 2021, Paddy Prendergast, the last player to feature in the 1951 final, passed away aged 95. Two years later, Dr Mick Loftus - the last surviving squad member - died aged 93, but it would not be until this year that Mayo returned to the biggest stage in Irish sport.'We don't know how to feel'It looked like Mayo would be on the end of another defeat when David Clifford - widely considered one of the greatest players of his generation, perhaps even of all time - netted to put Kerry in control in the early stages.But Mayo dug deep and fought back, and trailed by a single point at half-time.Things changed five minutes after the restart when Darragh Beirne finished off a flowing move to put Mayo into a lead they would not relinquish. Kerry, as great champions do, never folded and there was a late scare as the pressure grew, but Mayo were not to be denied in a three-point victory. The tears and emotion at the final whistle meant everything.Manager Andy Moran, a former Mayo player and in his first year in charge, went to his wife and family in the stands.The new generation, such as Beirne and the superb Aussie Rules-bound Kobe McDonald, soaked in every moment on the Croke Park pitch.There was over 80,000 people in attendance, and for those in green and red, plus the many neutrals in attendance, there was barely a dry eye in the house.While the so-called 'curse' is one thing, Mayo also wore a special white jersey in a final for the first time since 1951 due to a clash between the green home kit of Kerry. Perhaps it was fate."To every man, women, boy and girl in Mayo, wherever you are, dream big things," said captain Jack Coyne, who delivered one of the all-time great speeches before lifting the Sam Maguire."Anything is possible and we've shown it today. I'm over the moon."For McDonald, only 18 and whose father Ciaran featured in All-Ireland final heartbreaks, was able to sum up what it means to win the All-Ireland.Just finished his end-of-school leaving cert exams, he will move to Australia to join St Kilda in the lucrative Australian Football League. Given Gaelic football is an amateur sport, it is something he cannot be offered at home but he was determined to make history with 'one chance' written on his wrist before his Australian adventure.In the All-Ireland, players play for the counties they are born in. That's why it means more."It's surreal, we don't know how to feel," McDonald said on the GAA Social."To look around and see the people, they have given us so much over the years and to give them something proper to shout about is special."When asked if he knew what lay ahead in the celebrations, he added: "I don't, but I can't wait to find out."We'll soak it in and enjoy it."Mayo will now head back to Castlebar in their home county to celebrate their historic success with their people.Given it took 75 years, there is set to be another sea of celebration when they arrive on Ireland's west coast.Let's just hope they avoid any funerals on the journey home.

BECKLEY, W.Va. Potomac Valley Post 64's run through the state tournament was stopped Saturday, falling to South Charleston Post 94, 8-1, at Linda K. Epling Stadium.It was a 2-1 game before South Charleston (16-2) scored two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull away.Post 94's Jaxon Kimble tossed a complete-game gem, allowing a run on six hits in seven innings for the win.Luke Gordon doubled and singled, Ryan Anderson singled twice, and Joel Nelson drove in two.Potomac Valley's Mason Slade was dealt the loss, though just half of the eight runs credited to him across 5 1/3 innings were earned due to five Post 64 errors.Hunter Harr singled twice to lead the Potomac Valley offense. HANOVER Fort Cumberland Post 13 put the pressure on in the sixth inning, and St. Mary's wilted.Fort Cumberland, which was slow to adjust to a wide strike zone, had struck out looking five times to that point. Its hitters finally expanded in the sixth and put the ball in play, and St. Mary's responded with six errors three on ground balls, two on throws and one on a dropped fly ball.The go-ahead score crossed when Kohen Madden dove ahead of a tag after a Myles Bascelli fly ball was dropped in center field during the four-run frame, and Bryson Krumpach came up with a six-out save to secure the win.Madden added a long ball in the seventh inning, Liam Buck threw five strong innings on the mound and Fort Cumberland stayed alive, defeating St. Mary's Post 255, 7-3, for a second elimination-game victory in as many days on Day 3 of the Maryland American Legion state tournament on Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium."We had to grind it out," Fort Cumberland skipper Brian McAlpine said. "We were watching a lot of third strikes today. "I know my team relies on me. We all rely on each other. The past few years, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid had drifted away from bringing rookies and quarterbacks into training camp a few days early, reasoning that such a veteran team coming off deep playoff runs could do without it. After all, for a decade, the Chiefs had made at least the wild-card round. Many of those seasons ended in February. But the Chiefs collapsed last season, finishing a dismal 6-11 while losing quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a major knee injury. There were significant roster issues on both sides of the ball, depth problems at important positions that became exacerbated when injuries happened to other players, and it all meant an end to the season far earlier than anyone in Kansas City had expected. So, with the team in need of a reset among other reasons Reid opted to bring his quarterbacks and rookies, along with a few other players coming off injuries, back to Missouri Western State University for a few days of work before the full squad arrives. "I didn't like not doing it last year after I got done with it, to be honest with you," Reid said of the three-day crash course, which continued through heat indexes topping triple digits Sunday. "It's a good thing for the quarterbacks, good thing for the rookies coming in. We do have more numbers (of rookies) this year, so it allows us to get more reps. "I think," Reid added, "that will benefit us." It couldn't hurt. Start with the quarterbacks: Mahomes was cleared this past week to fully participate in training camp after undergoing surgery in December to repair torn knee ligaments. And while Reid insisted this week that the two-time MVP would have no limitations, there is nevertheless a certain comfort that comes with getting some reps without a full team flying around him. "You just have to build that confidence back," Mahomes said, "and I'm glad I get to do that from Day 1 of training camp. I didn't want to have to get only a couple of weeks of practice in and then have to go play a game. I wanted to build it up, see how training camp goes as we gradually build, and so I think that'll help me get back to where I need to be." For the next two QBs on the depth chart, there's the matter of learning the offense. The Chiefs swung a trade with the Jets to bring in Justin Fields as the veteran backup, in part to have someone capable of winning a couple of games should Mahomes be unable to start Week 1. Their young project QB is Garrett Nussmeier, the once-heralded college star from LSU who fell all the way to the 249th overall pick in the NFL draft last April. Beyond the quarterbacks, though, is the chance to get some extra work for a rookie class more than two dozen are in camp that Kansas City will be leaning upon more heavily than perhaps any other point in Reid's tenure. Defensive back Mansoor Delane, the first cornerback taken in the draft, is expected to start Week 1, and he may not be the only first-year player on the field. The Chiefs' other first-round pick, defensive tackle Peter Woods, could find himself playing alongside perennial Pro Bowl pick Chris Jones, while pass rusher R Mason Thomas will be counted upon to pressure the quarterback. That makes every extra rep they can get before the veterans arrive invaluable. "I'm super grateful for the three days (of rookie camp)," Woods said. "I told someone earlier that the veterans, they have a standard for what they want to see from us young guys. Just coming in and being able to have some days to prepare myself to be able to mesh well with the veterans, that means a lot to me. Not everyone gets a chance to do that." Not in Kansas City.
