Colorado WR Ernest Campbell among the Big 12's top returning receivers
Colorado is five days away from opening its 2026 fall camp as the Buffaloes begin preparations for Deion Sanders' fourth season at the helm. The Buffs had a solid offseason despite many changes, including two new coordinators and 40-plus transfers, most with proven production, albeit at a non-Power Four level. One of those players is Sacramento State transfer wide receiver Ernest Campbell. The speedy wideout is one of Pro Football Focus' highest-graded returning Big 12 wide receivers. He comes in ranked as the fifth-best returner with an 85.9 overall grade.Campbell is coming off a breakout season at Sacramento State after being named to the FCS Central Freshman All-American Team. He led the Hornets with 37 receptions for 755 yards and eight touchdowns. The most impressive stat from his 2025 season is his average of 20.41 yards per reception. Campbell's explosivity is by far his best trait, and he should be the big-play threat in Brennan Marion's Go-Go offense, which he knows well. He had touchdowns of 75, 63,60, 57 and 50 yards.Highest Graded Returning Big 12 Wide Receivers pic.twitter.com/zX5RTCKgHn PFF College (@PFF_College) July 28, 2026Campbell unsurprisingly has a track background, competing collegiately at Texas A&M as a true freshman in 2024. He recorded a 10.02 100m time at the NCAA West First Round meet and was an honorable mention All-American, placing 22nd at the 2024 NCAA Championships.Colorado is used to having wide receivers with speed, with players like LaJohntay Wester and Jimmy Horn Jr. adding a different dynamic during the 9-4 2024 season. CU is hoping Campbell can be that element this year and that it will lead to a similarly strong season.Follow Charlie StrellaonX,ThreadsandInstagram.Contact/Follow us@BuffaloesWireon X (formerly Twitter) and like our page onFacebookfor ongoing coverage ofColoradonews, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Buffaloes Wire: Colorado WR Ernest Campbell among the Big 12's top returning receivers

Interest growing in girls flag football, yet few area schools ready to make the leap
Jul. 29Multiple schools in the Miami Valley have indicated they do not plan to add girls flag football to their list of athletic programs.Cox First Media surveyed area high schools about their interest in offering girls flag football as a varsity activity following its approval by the OHSAA as its 29th sport. No area school that responded to the survey provided a "yes"-type response outside of the schools that already offer the sport.School administrators did provide positive feedback on the sport's growth and acceptance by the OHSAA.Northmont athletic director Micah Harding indicated the school is not in a position to add any new programs as it attempts to avoid further expenses, but believes it could be something that is explored in a better financial situation.Sustainability is also on the mind when it comes to growth. Miamisburg AD Jason Shade believes it would be difficult to ensure a program could make it through its infancy due to declining enrollment and a low percentage of upperclassmen females. The established spring sports in place at many schools already have the attention of many student-athletes, according to several responses."That said, we will continue to have conversations internally and gather feedback from our student-athletes and families regarding future interest," Shade said.Bellbrook AD Charlie O'Dell said he is happy to have added several girls sports in recent years, including wrestling, bowling and golf, but the total number of sports offered when compared to the district's steady enrollment numbers does not create the opportunity to add anything more. Those that already have the sport are proud to be at the forefront. The 2027 season will be the third year Trotwood has offered the sport. AD Jonas Smith said he is excited about its potential future. The school has also added flag football as a middle school sport."Flag football has generated tremendous enthusiasm among our student-athletes, and our young ladies have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to participate and compete," Smith said. The sport will continue to have a place in the area as it enters its first full season as part of the OHSAA. Trotwood, Badin, and all six Dayton City League members fielded teams in the 2026 Spring season.Badin were the inaugural state champions in 2025 as part of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association tournament and reached the first sponsored OHSAA state tournament in 2026.Ponitz CTC has won three consecutive city league titles.Girls flag football became the 29th sport recognized by the OHSAA in June and made Ohio the 40th state in the country to offer it. The OHSAA now sponsors more girls sports (15) than boys (14) and says 162 schools the majority being in the greater-Cincinnati and Cleveland area participated during the 2026 Spring season.Dates and sites for the 2027 state championships are to be determined. The finals were held at Massillon's Paul Brown Tiger Stadium and Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton the past two seasons.

Report: Crystal Palace step up interest in 25.7m former Arsenal ace
Report: Crystal Palace step up interest in 25.7m former Arsenal aceCrystal Palace weigh up Takehiro Tomiyasu move as defensive rebuild gathers paceCrystal Palace are exploring a deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu, with the former Arsenal defender training with the squad and edging into the picture ahead of the new season. As first reported by BBC Sport, the Eagles have held talks over a permanent contract that could bring the Japan international back to the Premier League on a free transfer. There is a feeling this is a smart market opportunity, provided the medical side stacks up. Tomiyasu, now 27, offers versatility, composure and top-level experience, qualities that always carry value when a club is trying to reshape its back line. He was named on the bench for the friendly against Lens on Tuesday, a small detail perhaps, but one that suggests Palace are taking a close and practical look at where he stands physically.Palace head coach Pierre Sage is understood to be planning around a system with three centre-backs next season, and Tomiyasu appears to fit that thinking neatly. His ability to operate across the defensive line could make him especially useful on the left of a back three, an area where tactical intelligence often matters as much as raw athleticism.Tomiyasu transfer offers upside and riskThe biggest question, of course, centres on fitness. Tomiyasus recent years have been disrupted by knee problems, and that explains why Palace are being thorough before committing. There is admiration for his quality, but also an awareness that availability is everything over a long campaign.Picture:IMAGOAfter leaving Arsenal by mutual consent last season, he moved to Ajax and made eight appearances towards the end of the campaign. That gave him valuable minutes, yet Palace will want stronger reassurance before turning broad agreement into a completed deal.Crystal Palace defensive targets taking shapeThis interest comes at a time when Palace are clearly bracing for change in defence. Maxence Lacroix is set for Chelsea, and Palace have already made at least one offer for Augsburg centre-back Chrislain Matsima in a move reported to be worth 30m, 25.7m. They also admire Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong on loan, while Brest defender Raphael le Guen remains on the radar. In that context, the Tomiyasu transfer feels like part of a wider strategy, one built around balancing cost, depth and tactical flexibility. If Palace are satisfied by the condition of his body, this could be one of the more intriguing free deals of the summer. Our ViewFrom a Palace fans perspective, this feels like the sort of move that can split opinion straight down the middle. On talent alone, there is plenty to like. Tomiyasu is a classy defender, comfortable in possession, calm under pressure and experienced at the highest level. If Pierre Sage wants a back three, then you can absolutely see the logic in bringing in someone who can read the game and slot into different roles. But Palace supporters will also be realistic. We have all seen what happens when a club signs quality without reliability. The concern is obvious, if the knees go again, then you are left with another body in the treatment room at a time when the squad needs certainty. With Lacroix on his way out, this is not really the moment for half-measures.That said, on a free transfer, the risk is easier to understand. Palace are not being asked to throw huge money at the deal, and if the medical staff are happy, then there is genuine upside here. The bigger picture is what matters most. Tomiyasu should not be the only answer. Matsima, another centre-back, and perhaps a young loan option would make the whole plan feel more convincing. As part of a wider rebuild, this could be clever business. As the main solution, it would feel a bit thin.
