Quarterback Sam Leavitt finally offered the reasons he transferred to LSU from Arizona State, and despite the criticism and groans from some Sun Devils fans, Im struggling to understand all the hate.Leavitt, in my opinion, didnt say anything that could be remotely confused with insulting coach Kenny Dillingham or the ASU football program.All he basically said was he wanted something a little bit different.It truly is just a different situation, Leavitt said of LSU. You talk about being a pro, trying to become the best version of yourself, and theres no other place to do it, other than here.He didnt openly criticize Arizona State, near as I can tell. ASU fans and others probably are just still hot and bothered because of the mystery and suspense surrounding Leavitts detachment from the Sun Devils after injuring his foot, undergoing surgery and not staying in contact with Dillingham and the team.Ultimately, he decided to enter the transfer portal and agree to a deal with the Tigers. And coach Lane Kiffin has high hopes for Leavitt.This was a move that netted him more NIL funds and, in his opinion, will help his NFL draft stock. He had every right to do what he did, even if his cloak-and-dagger approach toward the end of his time in Tempe still doesnt sit well with plenty of folks.If the ASU faithful wish to be upset, fine. The kicking competition is underway for the Indianapolis Colts.During Friday's training camp practice, Spencer Shrader and Blake Grupe attempted their first field goals of training camp -- and Grupe has the early edge.According to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan, Grupe was perfect on his attempts, making all six kicks, which ranged from roughly 33 yards to 55 yards.Special teams coordinator Brian Mason said on Thursday that Grupe has been "highly consistent" throughout the offseason.Shrader was solid as well on Friday, but did miss one attempt to the left.Mason mentioned that Shrader looks "completely healthy" coming off last season's ACL injury and that his leg strength looks "really good."During the one minicamp practice where the two kicked earlier this offseason, Grupe held the advantage that day as well, going 5-for-5, while Shrader was 3-for-5. That said, it's important to note that there have been other kicking sessions this offseason between the two that haven't taken place with media members present. The Oregon Ducks are gearing up for a recruiting war in the 2028 cycle against Ohio State, but for once, the Ducks are the team with some family ties helping them out.Three-star Legarrette Blount Jr. told Rivals (subscription required) that Oregon and Ohio State are standing out to him early in his recruitment out of Phoenix, Arizona. The Ducks have an edge since Blount is the son of former Oregon star running back LeGarrette Blount Sr., who is also a coach for his son's team at Mountain Pointe High School.Blount Jr. plays both wide receiver and safety, and his 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame has left his options open to play either position at the next level. I think visiting campuses and seeing each program in person is an important part of the recruiting process and it will help me make the best decision for my future.Nevada is also making a strong push for Blount Jr. early on. As a sophomore, Blount Jr. was used in a rotation on both sides of the ball, making 12 catches for 249 yards and three touchdowns offensively, and 15 tackles, four pass breakups, one interception and a sack on defense. If he plays more as a junior, as stock as a recruit could rise, and the race between Oregon and Ohio State could really heat up.Blount Sr. played two seasons at Oregon, although he was suspended for much of the 2009 season. In 2008, Blount Sr. ran for 1,002 yards and 17 touchdowns, which was a program record at the time. Gee, what could this mean? The New York Mets have scratched right-hander Freddy Peralta from his Friday night start against the Miami Marlins, according to the New York Post. Peralta, a free agent at the end of the season, has reportedly garnered trade interest from the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline. Peralta, a two-time All-Star, is in his first season with the Mets. Through 22 starts, the 30-year-old owns a 4.99 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP and an 83 ERA+, while totaling 113 strikeouts and -0.2 wins above replacement over 113 innings pitched. Last season, Peralta posted a career-best 2.70 ERA, 155 ERA+ and 5.5 wins above replacement with the Milwaukee Brewers where he spent the first eight seasons of his MLB career (2018-25) while posting 204 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP. The Mets acquired Peralta and fellow right-hander Tobias Myers from the Brewers in June for infielder Jett Williams and right-hander Brandon Sproat.
