As is our tradition here at Land-Grant Holy Land, we are dedicating our August to getting our readers ready for the upcoming season by spotlighting OSU players to watch throughout the month. Just to ease into things, I wanted to kick off my contributions to this series of articles by stating the obvious: Bo Jackson is a player to watch.Although the final seven words of the sentence above will seem obvious to most of those reading the articles on this site, there are several reasons for this to be the case. Weve been talking about Jackson since before he became a breakout star in 2025, with our Jami Jurich stating why he was a player to watch prior to last season; Gene Ross writing that Jackson was Ohio States best running back in any situation as far back as early last October; Alex Frank predicting that the second-year rusher would lead the Big Ten in yards in 2026; and Brett Ludwiczak making the case that he and Isaiah West will combine for 2,000 rushing yards this season. I even wrote about why I think Jackson can rush for 1,500 yards himself this year, pushing Ohio States offense into the top five nationally (Alex also wrote this summer that 1,500 yards was Jacksons ceiling).In short, weve spilt a lot of virtual ink writing about Jackson in these pages over the last year, so its obvious that hes a player worth noting. In light of our players to watch series, why not dive in, get one of the more obvious names out of the way, and focus on the reasons why hes being spotlighted here for the 2026 campaign?Before arriving in Columbus, Jackson was a multi-sport star at Villa AngelaSt. Joseph, where he ran for more than 2,000 combined yards and nearly 40 touchdowns his final two seasons, despite being slowed by a knee injury his senior year. Even though his knee limited him to just under 600 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior, Jackson emerged asa four-star recruit. He was the No. 5 running back in the country and No. 6 player at any position in Ohio, according to 247Sports.As a freshman, Jackson eventually emerged as the go-to back, fighting through injuries all season and posting 1,090 yards on 179 attempts for an average of 6.09 yards per attempt. Jackson averaged 13.8 rushing attempts and 83.9 yards per game numbers poised for an increase in 2026. He wasnt the short-yardage option for the offense, however, and he only scored six touchdowns.Despite being limited by injuries as a true freshman and starting the year behind transfer CJ Donaldson as the starter, Jackson put up solid numbers for any running back, let alone someone in their first year in college. After sitting out spring practice following shoulder surgery, he enters preseason camp as the projected starter under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who likes to lean on the running game to set up the pass. Hell have filled in a bit more after a year in Ohio States training program and has a season of experience to draw upon in his second year.While Jackson will face a tougher regular-season schedule in 2026, its fair to expect a few more explosive runs due to better footwork in the hole, less leaning/better center of gravity, breaking more arm tackles, and plain old experience (nothing beats it as a learning tool for football players). Smiths approach to running the football to set up the pass will also work in Jacksons favor, and it wouldnt be surprising to see Jackson catch more passes out of the backfield in 2026 as well, as the Buckeyes have plenty of weapons to clear out room underneath for him to find space. Id be surprised if he didnt build on the 19 receptions for 200 yards and a touchdown that he logged in 2025.Its imperative for Jackson to stay healthy in 2026 after two consecutive years of being slowed by various knocks. A good showing close to the 1,500 yards that I and my colleagues wrote about in the links higher in this post could serve Jacksons eventual draft status well and would certainly help the Buckeyes reach their team goals in 2026. With good players behind pushing Jackson, its reasonable to expect a solid season for the sophomore out of Cleveland.

It was raining at Buffalo Bills training camp Monday morning. The pads were starting to come out.Marv Levy would approve.The Hall of Fame coach turned 101 years old Monday, and current Bills head coach Joe Brady opened his news conference before practice at St. John Fisher University with a birthday message for one of his predecessors, and a nod to a mentality that still resonates with the Bills decades later."When it's too hard for them, it's just right for us," Brady said, referencing one of Levy's famous sayings. "The mindset, the mentality, how the Buffalo Bills as an organization and the ship that he led, nothing's going to change."The timing was fitting.The Bills practiced in shoulder pads Monday and will put on full pads for the first time Tuesday. Brady has promised a tough training camp since the Bills arrived at St. John Fisher, including embracing the rain during the first practice last week.Levy built some of the greatest teams in Bills history around a similar embrace of adversity.But Brady's connection to Levy goes beyond sharing the same job in Buffalo.Levy was the head coach at William & Mary from 1964 to 1968. Brady played at William & Mary in 2013 and 2014 before beginning his coaching career there as a linebackers coach for two seasons.Brady said a photo of Levy was among those he saw every day when walking into the William & Mary football building.Decades apart, they followed a path that eventually led both to Buffalo.Brady said he spoke to Levy after becoming Bills head coach."He's given me wisdom, which is unbelievable," Brady said. "And 101. I'm just hoping to get to 37."Levy coached the Bills from 1986 to 1997, leading Buffalo to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, six AFC East titles and 123 victories, including the postseason. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.Levy celebrated his 100th birthday last year in Canton, Ohio, where he was recognized during the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony and celebrated with several players from Buffalo's Super Bowl teams, including Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed and James Lofton.A year later, Levy's influence still isn't difficult to find around the Bills.Especially on a rainy training camp morning with the pads coming out."Happy birthday to Marv Levy," Brady said. Its time to put on the pads! After easing their way into 2026 training camp since last week, its starting to get more real for the Green Bay Packers as theyre set to have their first practice wearing their pads. However, those hopes never came to fruition, and now Polk is walking away from the NFL.The Saints announced on Sunday that Polk is retiring from the NFL just two seasons into his career. The 24-year-old was competing for a role in the Saints' offense during training camp, but apparently he prefers to move on to the next stage of his career.Here's a look back at Polk's brief NFL career.Ja'Lynn Polk retiresThe Saints placed Polk on the reserve/retired list on Sunday afternoon, signaling that the wide receiver has decided to walk away from the game.The Patriots drafted Polk in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Washington, hoping he could grow with Drake Maye and form a dynamic duo. Polk was the 37th player taken in the draft and the 10th wide receiver, behind names like Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr.Most notably, though, New England traded back a few spots with the Chargers to select Polk at No. 37. Los Angeles used that No. 34 pick from the Patriots to take wide receiver Ladd McConkey.Polk played 15 games as a rookie and produced just 87 yards in a dismal Patriots season, as he was one of many New England players who struggled that year. After 19 years of hard-hitting, tackling-to-the-ground training-camp practices under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers will put on pads for the first time in 20 years without Tomlin running the show.It will be interesting, to say the least, to see how it looks and how it feels.New coach Mike McCarthy made a stir last week by saying the Steelers will not tackle to the ground. He has since clarified that camp will still be physical, and that he's trying to ensure that the players will be healthy for the start of the season.The issue sparked a full Associated Press article on the absence of tackling, and what it will mean to the players who have spent multiple years navigating the physicality of Camp Tomlin.Obviously, I love to tackle, inside linebacker Payton Wilson said, per the AP. It's been great in the past to get that in before the first preseason game, but that's what preseason games are for.The focus in practice will shift from tackling to doing everything before the actual tackle. The long stride, short stride, the specifics of how the fundamentals are being taught to the approach, the strike, the wrap, the finish, McCarthy said. So these are constants that are taught throughout our whole team.Linebacker Patrick Queen, who once revolted against the no-tackling edict in Baltimore, seems to be on board with the new approach in Pittsburgh.At the end of the day, you still got a chance to put yourself on somebody, put your hip on somebody, Queen said. Whatever you do pre-tackle, it's the same as putting somebody on the ground.It will be an adjustment for the players who comply (or who initially don't). It will be an adjustment for the media and fans who watch it. And it will be a tangible piece of evidence when it's time to compare the team's in-season performance from 2007 through 2025 under Tomlin and 2026 under Mike McCarthy.
