SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal step up bid to sign Newcastle's Guimaraes: reportsNewcastle's Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes (RONALDO SCHEMIDT)Arsenal have stepped up talks with Newcastle in a bid to sign Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports on Tuesday. The Premier League champions reportedly had a recent 70 million ($93 million) offer rejected for Guimaraes, but are set to return with an improved offer.Arsenal are keen on Newcastle captain Guimaraes after opting not to match Chelsea's British record 117 million swoop for England forward Morgan Rogers.Guimaraes, 28, scored nine goals and produced eight assists in all competitions for Newcastle last term.Newcastle, who signed Guimaraes for 35 million from Lyon in 2022, are keen to avoid a repeat of the protracted transfer saga that ended with Alexander Isak joining Liverpool just before the transfer deadline last year.Isak effectively went on strike, refusing to take part in Newcastle's pre-season preparations 12 months ago, in a bid to force through his move to Anfield.Eddie Howe, who quit as Newcastle manager last week, had admitted earlier in the close-season that he was concerned about losing Guimaraes. After a holiday following Brazil's World Cup last-16 defeat against Norway in July, Guimaraes has linked up with Newcastle on the club's pre-season training camp in Spain. But it looks increasingly unlikely he will be with the Magpies when they kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on August 23.Arsenal open their title defence against Coventry at the Emirates Stadium on August 21.Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has not spoken publicly about his interest in Guimaraes, but said the club are "very active" and "very ambitious in what we want to do"."We need to increase the competition internally. We need to make sure we identify the things that we don't have in the team," he said.smg/jc0 Comments 0 Shares 60 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGiants prospects 2026: What to know about Ramon Marquez, Henry Lalane, more after Luis Arraez, Heliot Ramos tradesGiants prospects 2026: What to know about Ramon Marquez, Henry Lalane, more after Luis Arraez, Heliot Ramos trades originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The San Francisco Giants were expected to be clear sellers at this year's trade deadline, and they did just that with a slew of trades throughout deadline day.Their first notable move was shipping Luis Arraez and Caleb Kilian to the Philadelphia Phillies. Later, the Giants traded Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees, Erik Miller to the Boston Red Sox, and Robbie Ray to the San Diego Padres. After all four of those big trades, who did the Giants get in return? Ramon Marquez and Henry Lalane are two big names, but they hardly scratch the surface of what's coming the Giants' way this summer after their deadline deals.Get to know all the new prospects the Giants added in fire sale at trade deadlineLuis Arraez and Caleb Kilian to the Phillies for two prospectsThe first trade worth diving into is the Arraez deal. In exchange for Arraez and Kilian, the Phillies sent Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair, two right-handed pitchers, to the Giants.Marquez, according to MLB Pipeline, is the new No. 7-ranked prospect in the Giants' farm system. He's a 20-year-old pitcher who is having a breakout season, posting a 1.68 ERA in 59 innings of work with 93 strikeouts. He's a very fun prospect.Gair doesn't rank inside the top-30 prospects, but the 23-year-old right-hander has a 4.50 ERA this season with 66 strikeouts in 36 innings of work as a reliever.Heliot Ramos to the Yankees for two prospectsAnother important trade for the Giants was their deal sending Ramos to the Yankees. Henry Lalane, a left-handed pitcher who is 22 years old, comes in as the Giants' No. 9-ranked prospect after the deadline. He has a 2.77 ERA in 78 innings of work this season between Single-A and High-A. Lalane is an intriguing pitching prospect, but not the only one coming back for Ramos.MORE:Yankees' projected lineup with Luis Garcia Jr. after Nationals trade might have a problemKaeden Kent, the son of Hall of Famer Jeff Kent, is a 22-year-old infield prospect coming to San Francisco in the Ramos trade. He's their new No. 22-ranked prospect.Kent is a left-handed-hitting shortstop who has a .302 batting average and .792 OPS in 321 at-bats this season at High-A.Robbie Ray to the Padres for two prospectsWhile the Ray trade might go under-the-radar due to the return, the package of Joniel Hernandez and Miguel Mendez is noteworthy.Mendez is the Giants' No. 14-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and the 24-year-old right-hander has a 4.79 EA in 35.2 innings of work. There are some questions about Mendez, but he's still got some intriguing upside.Hernandez, meanwhile, is just 17 years old, was signed earlier this year, and in 42 games in the Dominican Summer League, is hitting .316 with a .958 OPS with 50 hits, 42 runs scored, 16 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 44 RBIs, 34 walks, 31 strikeouts, and six steals.Erik Miller to the Red Sox for one playerThis trade, sending reliever Erik Miller to the Boston Red Sox, might be the most unexpected. In exchange for Miller, the Giants received former top prospect Marcelo Mayer.MORE:Red Sox expected to trade Jarren Duran during offseason, not MLB trade deadlineThe 23-year-old is currently on the injured list and has struggled during his Major League career. In 114 big-league games, across 332 at-bats, Mayer has 74 hits, 18 doubles, seven home runs, 32 RBIs, 24 walks, 85 strikeouts, a .223 batting average, a .625 OPS, and 0.3 bWAR.But, there's still some upside for Mayer, who is under club control through the 2031 season. While it might not be as exciting if the Giants had added him a year ago, Mayer is still a very intriguing pickup for the Giants.Overall Giants' haul after the trade deadline.Buster Posey traded away Luis Arraez, Robbie Ray, Heliot Ramos, and Erik Miller at this year's deadline. In return, he got Marcelo Mayer, and their new No. 7 (Ramon Marquez), No. 9 (Henry Lalane), No. 14 (Miguel Mendez), No. 21 (Joniel Hernandez), and No. 22 (Kaeden Kent) ranked prospects alongside Marty Gair. It's a massive haul for the Giants, and is a good way for the club to take at least one positive from what was a very disappointing 2026 season up to this point.More MLB news:Cubs land Kevin Gausman in blockbuster trade with Blue JaysWhat did Mets get for Freddy Peralta? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIvory Coast reappoint Herve Renard for attempt at repeat of AFCON titleFrench coach Herve Renard has returned to take over Ivory Coast, who he led to the African title in 2015, the Ivorian federation has announced in a statement.Renard, who was an emergency replacement for Tunisia during the World Cup in June, replaces Emerse Fae.Faes deal was not renewed after the World Cup despite the Ivorians reaching the knockout stages for the first time in four appearances before being eliminated by Norway in the last 32.Renard was parachuted in during the World Cup to take over Tunisia after they lost their opening game 5-1 against Sweden. But he had little success in reviving their fortunes as the Tunisians then lost to Japan and the Netherlands, conceding a further seven goals. They were the only one of the 10 African teams at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States that did not progress to the round of 32.The 57-year-old Renard has also coached the national teams of Angola, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Zambia, with whom he won the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2012.His stint with Saudi Arabia ended on the eve of the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite helping the team qualify for the tournament.Renard was also coach of Frances womens team at the Paris Olympic Games two years ago.He will aim for a third Cup of Nations title next year when the tournament is cohosted in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The Ivorians begin their qualifying campaign next month with a crunch clash at home to fellow World Cup side and neighbours Ghana, before another Group C game with Somalia four days later.0 Comments 0 Shares 62 Views 0 Reviews

On Tuesday, the US LBM Coaches Poll released its preseason rankings, and while the Colorado Buffaloes were far from making the top 25, four Big 12 teams made the cut.Texas Tech, the reigning Big 12 champion, unsurprisingly is the highest-ranked Big 12 team, coming in at No. 12 in the rankings. BYU is right behind them at No. 15, with Utah (No. 21) and Houston (No. 24) rounding out the Big 12 representation.TCU (63 votes), Arizona (50 votes), Arizona State (8 votes) and Kansas State (1 vote) were the four Big 12 teams in the receiving votes categories. Georgia Tech, Colorado's Week 1 opponent, received 26 votes. At the top of the poll, Ohio State takes the top spot, receiving 38 first-place votes and, perhaps surprisingly, unseating the reigning national champions, Indiana, for the No. 1 spot. The Hoosiers received 14 first-place votes, but landed at No. 6. Oregon, Georgia, Texas and Notre Dame round out the top five.USA TODAY Sports revealed the entire top 25 on a live YouTube show with analysts from several top programs.
