Donald's workout is a technical process, so from now on, things can only be said step by step.He's putting himself in a position to make a decision, McVay said. And so, he's working hard, he's feeling good. He's really been doing some different things that are in alignment with being able to play this game, activating his lower half, and he's feeling good so far.Defensive coordinator Chris Shula said with a smile at training camp:I heard it was good. If Donald can even match his old performance, the Rams' defense will be dangerous, and yeah, with the Super Bowl being in Los Angeles, this opportunity is golden.

The Los Angeles Lakers' main roster weakness remains a legitimate two-way starting wing or forward. Luka Doncic could start at one forward position, at least in terms of defensive matchups, and it is possible that Quentin Grimes gets one starting guard spot alongside Austin Reaves.But as of now, Sandro Mamukelashvili is, in the minds of many, the Lakers' default starter at the other forward position. While he has become a solid contributor over the last couple of years, he seems ill-suited to start and play at least about 25 minutes a game (he averaged 21.9 minutes a game last season), and his defense is somewhat suspect.There has been lots of talk and reporting about the Lakers' pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga to fill that other starting forward spot. There has also been some talk about the team potentially going after P.J. Washington, but NBA insider Jake Fischer said he hasn't heard that it is going after the Dallas Mavericks power forward.There is now some chatter that if Los Angeles wants to fill that roster hole by the end of this summer, perhaps it should shift its focus to De'Andre Hunter.Hunter has been mentioned in the media as a possible optionHunter wouldn't necessarily be the perfect man to fill that starting forward position for L.A. His shooting percentages went way down last season to 41.5% overall and 30.5% from 3-point range, and he appeared in just 45 games. But he is 6-foot-7, weighs about 220 pounds and has a 7-foot-2 wingspan, and while he may not be a consistently great defender, he has the tools to be good enough on that end of the floor, as he's considered an above-average athlete.The Lakers reportedly had trade talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers about acquiring Hunter several months ago at midseason before he was sent to the Sacramento Kings. Khobi Price of the California Post recently mentioned him as a possible alternative to Kuminga, as did Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report.Pincus also put together a possible package the Lakers could send to Sacramento in return for Hunter and why Sacramento could say yes."Sacramento was among the worst teams in the NBA last season. The Hunter acquisition places the team almost $4 million above the luxury tax this year, assuming the Kings reach the required 14 standard players with another minimum signing."Hunter is extension eligible, but as Sacramento retools, the franchise needs to wait and see before making any further hefty commitments. The Lakers can help get the team immediately under the luxury tax with a combination of [Jarred] Vanderbilt, [Dalton] Knecht, and [Jaden] Hardy (or [Jake] LaRavia)."The Kings would need to view Knecht as a player who can fit with their young core. Sacramento doesn't have as much financial pressure next season once Zach LaVine's $49 million comes off its books. The Kings could look to get a third team like the Brooklyn Nets to take Hardy, but a LaVine buyout near $4 million, along with a Lakers deal, would get the franchise out of the tax entirely."Pincus also pointed out that the fact that Vanderbilt has two years left on his contract, including a player option for the final year, could result in the Kings asking for draft capital from Los Angeles. L.A. has three second-round draft picks and one first-round pick swap to offer in any potential trade -- would it be worth it for the team to part with most or all of that in order to land Hunter?Ever since Hunter was the No. 4 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, he has historically been a solid 3-point shooter and a viable scoring threat. Cody Gakpo comes into the season after a disappointing World Cup with the Netherlands [Getty Images]Tottenham are keen on a move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as Roberto de Zerbi continues reshaping his squad.Any deal would be far from straightforward. Liverpool are reluctant to weaken their attacking options, particularly after Mohamed Salah's departure and with Hugo Ekitike still recovering from an Achilles injury. The Reds are themselves pursuing Paris St-Germain winger Bradley Barcola but, even if he arrived, Liverpool would be losing one of their most experienced attackers.So why are Spurs interested? And what do the numbers suggest Gakpo would bring to De Zerbi's side?A tactical fit for De Zerbi?On the surface, Gakpo looks like another left winger. In reality, he offers considerably more tactical flexibility.Although he has played most of his football for Liverpool from the left, the Netherlands international has regularly been used as a central striker, false nine and second forward. De Zerbi reportedly views him as someone capable of operating through the middle, dropping between the lines to link play before releasing runners beyond him.That profile fits the Italian's football. Instead of relying on a traditional penalty-box striker, De Zerbi often asks his centre forward to vacate central spaces, combine with midfielders and create room for wide players to attack. Gakpo possesses the technical quality, close control and positional intelligence to perform that role while also providing cover on the left.His versatility would also offer Tottenham valuable insurance across multiple positions. Dominic Solanke and Mathys Tel are both natural central forwards, but neither provide the same ability to move seamlessly between the wing and the middle.The underlying numbers remain strongGakpo's 2025-26 campaign divided opinion among Liverpool supporters, with seven Premier League goals representing his lowest return in a full season at Anfield.The underlying data, however, paints a far more encouraging picture. Though Liverpool struggled collectively, Gakpo actually remained one of Europe's most dangerous wide forwards in terms of finding scoring opportunities. Only seven wingers across Europe's top five leagues averaged more touches in the opposition penalty area than his 2.2 per 90 minutes, while he also ranked inside the top 10 for both open-play shots and chances created.His player comparison profile reinforces those strengths. Compared with positional peers across Europe's top five leagues, Gakpo ranked in the 98th percentile for shot frequency, the 96th percentile for advanced involvement and the 91st percentile for box threat. In other words, very few wide players became involved in dangerous attacking situations more regularly.Those numbers are driven by his willingness to attack space behind defences. Gakpo was caught offside 30 times in the Premier League last season, more than any other player, illustrating how often he looked to run beyond the last defender in search of goalscoring opportunities, as opposed to simply receiving the ball to feet.At his best, Gakpo regularly attacks the back post, times his runs into the penalty area intelligently and arrives centrally despite starting from the left flank. And, while he endured a difficult season last term, he scored regularly for Liverpool as the Reds won the title in 2024-25, with 18 goals in all competitions. Better than Spurs' current options?The comparison with Tottenham's existing attackers helps explain the interest.Gakpo finished last season with a higher expected-goals total (8.59), more shots (87), more assists (five) and more big chances created (10) than any of Spurs' forward options, despite playing in a Liverpool side whose Premier League title defence ended with a fifth-place finish.Richarlison scored more league goals, but attempted 26 fewer shots and created only half as many big chances. Solanke, limited by injury, produced just 20 shots and one big chance created, while Tel also fell short across several of the key attacking measures. Randal Kolo Muani, who spent last season on loan at Spurs before joining Juventus this summer, likewise trailed Gakpo's output.The contrast extends beyond goals and shooting. Gakpo recorded 187 touches in the opposition penalty area, compared with 125 for Richarlison, 68 for Tel and 55 for Solanke. His 4.17 expected assists from open play was also comfortably the highest figure among the four, underlining his ability to create chances as well as find scoring positions himself.He offers defensive value too. Gakpo regained possession 87 times, including 45 in the middle third, and made 13 interceptions. All three totals were higher than those recorded by Richarlison, Tel and Solanke. Tel completed more dribbles, with 39 to Gakpo's 34, although Gakpo posted the slightly better success rate at 45.95%.His broader profile reflects that breadth. Gakpo ranks in the 78th percentile for link-up play, the 75th for pass progression and the 67th for creative threat, illustrating his comfort combining in tight spaces and contributing to build-up play.At 6ft 4in, he also provides a physical presence uncommon among wide forwards. Gakpo ranks in the 96th percentile for aerial volume compared with positional peers across Europe's top five leagues, meaning only about 4% of wingers contest aerial balls at a higher rate. That would give De Zerbi another route against deep defensive blocks, through diagonal passes, back-post crosses or more direct balls when opponents restrict Spurs' build-up play.Why Liverpool are reluctant to sellThose attributes also explain why Liverpool are not actively looking to move him on.Despite frustration surrounding his performances at times last season, Gakpo remains one of the squad's few established forwards. Losing both him and Salah during the same transfer window would significantly reduce Liverpool's attacking depth, particularly while Ekitike works his way back from injury. Even if the Reds complete a move for Barcola, much would still rest on the shoulders of newcomer Victor Munoz and highly rated 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, making Gakpo's proven quality and range difficult to replace.The Reds also know Gakpo has consistently delivered in the Premier League.Since arriving from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, Gakpo has scored seven, eight, 10 and seven league goals across his four seasons at Anfield while adding regular creative contributions. Since November 2024, only Salah has scored more Premier League goals for Liverpool than Gakpo's 17, while only Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai have registered more intentional assists than his five. His output has remained remarkably consistent despite playing under different managers and in multiple attacking roles.For Tottenham, that combination of reliability and multi-positional value is precisely the attraction. While seven league goals last season may not immediately stand out, the underlying metrics tell a different story. Gakpo continues to generate chances at an elite rate, gets into dangerous positions more frequently than almost any winger in Europe and offers tactical flexibility few forwards can match.Whether Tottenham can persuade Liverpool to part with one of their most seasoned attackers remains to be seen. Richard Hughes told he'll now need to spend 80m to sign long-term Liverpool targetFor Liverpool, the transfer market is becoming rather inflated this summer.Indeed, the Anfield outfit are partly to blame for this after they spent 125 million on Alexander Isak and 116 million on Florian Wirtz last summer but, the fact that Elliott Anderson and Morgan Rogers have both joined new clubs for over 115 million each hasn't helped matters much either.The difference in the value of players between clubs is one of the main reasons why Liverpool have hardly done any business this summer.Curtis Jones has been on the cusp of leaving for who knows how long but, since the Reds believe he's worth more than Inter Milan are offering, they're sticking firm to their beliefs and not allowing him to leave.The same thing is happening with Bradley Barcola. GambleAware.org30 FREECLAIM NOWLiverpool would be silly to spend 80 million on Pedro NetoFor some reason, almost every attacker that Liverpool have been linked with this summer have been natural left-wingers.In fact, the one attacker that they have signed is a left-winger which means that the Reds now have three options to choose from on the left.Each player deserves to start for Iraola's squad but, with the formation that the Spaniard is likely to play, only one will be able to play in his natural position.That's why making a move for Neto doesn't make all that much sense.Although the Portugal international has played as a striker and a right-winger in the past, it's clear that he's a lot more comfortable on the left than he is anywhere else.And, since Liverpool will want to give Rio Ngumoha a lot more playing time this term, adding another left-winger to their ranks doesn't make much sense at all.Indeed, Barcola is also a left-winger by trade but, with how often Luis Enrique interchanges his attackers, the 23-year-old can easily play on the right if needed.Salah, some serious questions will need to be asked of their recruitment team.
