SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy did Stefon Diggs choose the Commanders?New Washington Commanders wide receiver Stefon Diggs met with the media on Friday after his first practice. Diggs spoke for close to 15 minutes, expressing gratitude not only to be with a team that has a chance to win big, but, even more importantly, to play for his hometown team. Diggs made it no secret he wanted to play for the Commanders. Throughout the offseason, Diggs was asked about playing for Washington. It was clear that the Maryland native was ready to return home to the region where he grew up. On Friday, Diggs was asked why the Commanders were a good fit for him. "It's home," he responded. "My family's here, my support system is here. I love everything about home. And the organization, they take care of their players. Some good people over here. I had some existing relationships from guys that were in Houston, so some carried over there. They got a great young quarterback. I'm familiar with young quarterbacks. [QB Jayden Daniels] He's a star. He's a superstar. I'm excited for him, excited for this team."The entire time Diggs was speaking, he was fighting off bugs. It was quite funny. He joked several times and smiled throughout. But the final question led to an emotional, thought-out answer. "I got a little chills just now," Diggs said. "I played for a couple of teams actually. The Alexandria Raiders or Titans. And I played for White Oak, and I played for MV. So, I had a couple of teams. I wanna show them all some love. I can't write a better story at this point in my career, and what I wanna do and being able to be healthy and coming off of ACL. Having success and going to your hometown team, you wanna shine for them, and I wanna put on for my city. I'm always gonna want to do that. I did it when I was away, and I wanna do it when I'm home. It definitely means a lot to me. Pulling your heartstrings a little bit, but I know the city is behind me. I know I got a support system here, and I know I got a lot of love here, so all I wanna do is make people proud."Make no mistake, Diggs is happy. It's a perfect situation for both sides. Washington badly needed another impact wide receiver, while Diggs wanted to land in a favorable situation. That favorable situation just also happened to be his hometown story. The Commanders made it to the NFC Championship Game two seasons ago. Diggs was the leading receiver on the AFC Champion New England Patriots last season. Can you imagine if Diggs could help lead the Commanders to the Super Bowl? You couldn't script a better ending. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHarrison Moore has drawn Jake Slaughter comparisons as Floridas offensive line takes shapeTheres plenty of uncertainty about how Florida footballs offensive line will look this coming season. But the biggest question is how the Gators will replace the leadership of decorated center Jake Slaughter. The longtime starter was a two-time All-American and two-time finalist for the Rimington Trophy, which is awarded to the nations best center. Now, Florida is turning to Georgia Tech transfer Harrison to fill those sizable shoes.Even though Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. are in the middle of a quarterback battle, theres been plenty of praise for Moores abilities. It gives me Jake Slaughter vibes a little bit just because of the way he carries himself, his leadership, said Jones, who played with Slaughter last season. You see him; we work out in the morning, in the summer, and you see him up here at 3 oclock getting perfect snaps, making sure hes perfect.Thats something everyone sees, and thats something that were going to follow and then just him up front, how physical he is, how smart he is. Thats someone thats Jake Slaughter vibes.Moore was named to the 2026 preseason Rimington Trophy watchlist but has yet to play a full season at center. The Southlake, Texas, native played tight end in high school and then transitioned to offensive line in college. At Georgia Tech, Moore took snaps at center last year, which saw him flip between guard and center.Philo recognized Moores leadership ability along with Penn State transfer TJ Shanahan Jr., who made five starts at guard.(Moores) got a dog mentality, theres no other way to put it, Philo said. Hes a trench warrior. Hes going to give it everything hes got every single play, and TJ Shanahan as well. Those two guys have really pushed everybody in the room, and theyre out there every single day getting snaps after practice, and they were doing that even before practice like, throughout the whole summer they were getting snaps. Theyve really worked their butt off. Those guys are going to get everything they work for.Overall, both quarterbacks noted how the offensive line has come together on and off the field.I think theyve grown tremendously, Jones said. How physical they are, how detailed they are and then how close they became as a group, just seeing them together around the facility, seeing them outside the facility, just eating; Im going to a restaurant, Im seeing three or four guys hanging out with each other thats something you want to see, and they can be able to work together and jive as one.Reach Florida Gators writer Andrew Abadie at AAbadie@usatodayco.com or on X (formerly Twitter) at @AndrewAbadie.
