SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGiants 3B Matt Chapman likely to undergo season-ending surgery for hernia, core muscle tearSan Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a hernia and core muscle tear, according to reports.Chapman, 33, will see specialist Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Sunday, the San Francisco Chronicles Susan Slusser reported. The 10-year veteran will then likely have surgery on Tuesday. Hes going to go see an expert in that field and be sure about what needs to be done, Giants manager Tony Vitello told reporters on Friday, via MLB.com. "Surgery's probably more likely than not.But I think getting squared away with that doctor and [being] 100% about whats the best path, he added. If that is the path, it would be the end of his season on the field. The Giants are 49-67 going into Saturdays play, placing them fourth in the NL West, 20 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chapman has struggled with the injury throughout the season. He has been on the injured list since July 1 with what was termed an abdominal strain. The third baseman was noticeably uncomfortable during the Giants 8-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 30. In the sixth inning, Chapman fielded a chopper and threw out catcher Gabriel Moreno but was limping and favoring the top of his right leg as he came off the field. Chapman batted in the seventh and hit an infield pop-out, but limped to first base and subsequently left the game. Chapmans 2026 season will end with him appearing in 84 games, compiling a slash average of .235/.324/.368 with 7 home runs, 18 doubles and 42 RBI. Hes signed with the Giants through 2030 after inking a six-year, $151 million contract extension in September 2024. In Chapmans absence, Christian Koss (.157 average, .380 OPS) has been filling in at third base. Casey Schmitt (21 homers, .784 OPS) likely would have taken over at the position, but he will also miss the rest of the season due to a torn meniscus sustained in July 27s 3-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers that required surgery.Another possibility might be Marcelo Mayer, the former Boston Red Sox prospect who the Giants picked up at the MLB trade deadline for left-handed reliever Erik Miller. Mayer, 23, is a natural shortstop but with Willy Adames manning that position, he may have to play elsewhere. Last season, Mayer played 39 games at third base, starting 28 of them. Mayer is currently on the injured list with a bone stress reaction in his left forearm, but hes been cleared for baseball activities and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week.0 Komentáře 0 Sdílení 149 Shlédnutí 0 Hodnocení

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNotes: Illinois could boast versatile wide receiver roomAug. 8CHAMPAIGN Pat Bryant has become the standard of comparison for Illinois wide receivers during Justin Stepp's tenure coaching that position for the Illini.Bryant's willingness to block on the perimeter was held up as an example. So was the versatility he possessed that allowed Stepp and offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. to line him up in every spot a wide receiver could occupy."We did all kinds of stuff with Pat," Stepp said. "We put him everywhere. We lined him up at fullback."That was a special case, of course, but did lead to the game-winning touchdown against Nebraska two years ago in Lincoln, Neb. The Cornhuskers' defense didn't account for Bryant out of the backfield, and he was wide open in the end zone on a first-and-goal overtime play.Bryant at fullback might have been an outlier, but being able to cycle as many wide receivers as possible through the more typical spots they line up at on game day is Illinois' goal. Stepp has that in this year's wide receiver corps from guys like Collin Dixon, Hudson Clement, Jayshon Platt, Brayden Trimble and even 6-foot-5, 220-pound Alex Perry."I tell them the more positions you can play the better off you're going to be," Stepp said. "I'm challenging those guys in the meeting room to learn it, and then go put it on the field. Be a plug-and-play guy. That stuff helps tremendously because you can mix a bunch of different packages.Stepp has to see that ability his wide receivers in practice though, before he puts it on the field on game day. That level of commitment, he said, has been consistent during his now three seasons in Champaign working for Bret Bielema."Coach B. says it all the time that 'practice habits become game day reality,'" Stepp said. "You don't just turn it on on Saturday. You're going to play how you practice, and our guys, we practice hard. It's not a daggum camp around here. We're getting after it. You get confidence on Saturday because you know you've prepared your tail off the entire week. You practiced hard Monday through Friday, and Saturdays are easy." Jake Renfro has had more experience than he'd like on the sidelines during a college football career that started in Cincinnati, took him to Wisconsin to follow coach Luke Fickell and will end in Champaign playing his final season at Illinois. The 6-4, 320-pound offensive lineman missed the entire 2022 season at Cincinnati because of a knee injury after starting 19 of 21 games at center for the Bearcats in his first two years with the program. That same injury also cost him the 2023 season at Wisconsin.Multiple injuries limited Renfro to just four games in 2025 at Wisconsin after a healthy 2024 for the Badgers. His arrival in January in Champaign came with some limitations, too, as he sat out all of spring practices before being fully cleared May 1.Renfro ultimately spent his first four months at Illinois helping Bart Miller and Byron Bell coach the offensive line."Unfortunately, I have done it before with the injuries, but I've grown more comfortable in that role as being that vocal guy that can help coach these guys," said Renfro, who was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list this week."I kind of earned the respect of the guys around me by just going out there and showing them what I know," Renfro continued. "I've played a lot of football in my career. Knowing what it takes to play the game, I was able to help these guys, and I was lucky enough they listened and they learned from it. It was a good spring." Will Holmes' move from linebacker to defensive line albeit in a hybrid role that could see him play both this fall was one of two position changes Bielema announced before Monday's first training camp practice. How Holmes performed in Monday's practice was impressive enough new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck jotted down in his notes from the day that the 6-4, 260-pound Utah State transfer would be "hard to handle" in the Illinois defense because of his size, speed and physicality.Hauck was also clear he considers Holmes has only just begun to show what he's capable of on the football field. The fact the Detroit native's two seasons at Utah State were his first ever playing organized football plays a role in that evaluation that goes beyond Holmes' size, speed and physicality."His background with baseball and the way he goes through his training and the way he processes information and the way he goes and takes it immediately to the field, that's also extremely exciting," Illinois defensive line coach Jordan Thomas said. Holmes was a pitcher and outfielder in the Los Angeles Angels' system from 2018-2021 after being selected in the 2018 MLB draft."When you have kind of that pro sport mindset, it allows you to be even more successful in college because you've seen what it looks like at the highest level," Thomas continued. "He's been an absolute asset to have in the room." Tip Reiman might have started his third season in the NFL on the physically unable to perform list, but he's already proven himself with the Arizona Cardinals as the road-grader blocker complement to Trey McBride at tight end.Tanner Arkin has begun to do the same for New England. An undrafted free agent, Arkin has begun to establish himself with the Patriots in the same way Reiman has in the desert. Block first. Catch later. Just like their respective Illinois careers. How Reiman has stuck with the Cardinals after being selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft and how Arkin might do the same with the Patriots after going undrafted isn't going unnoticed in Champaign."I'm really excited to be able to build off what they have done," Illinois tight end Christian Abney said. The Ball State transfer started four games for the Illini last season playing with Arkin."It's the realization of seeing those guys work and it's like, 'OK, that's what it takes,'" Abney continued. "Those guys showed up to work every day and went as hard as they could. You see, over time, where they're at now, and it's a great example to look at." Illinois moving full-time to a 3-3-5 defense under Hauck won't lock the Illini into that structure every snap of every game. Don't be surprised to see Illinois' MIKE linebackers guys like Daniel Brown and Mason Muragin playing near the line of scrimmage.Pass-rush ability has become a must for Illinois' MIKE linebackers, as that position as a whole likely changes the most under Hauck."From spring to now, it was just identifying who could do what," Illinois outside linebackers coach Archie McDaniel said. "Thee beauty of it is the way it's going to be packaged and called we can put guys in the right spots that don't expose any weaknesses. That's what we're figuring out."We've got a room full of guys that all have different skill sets, but they all work well together. When you look up and say, 'Well, we want to get this thing done and this specific player can't, there's somebody in the room who can.'"0 Komentáře 0 Sdílení 149 Shlédnutí 0 Hodnocení -

The Swabians beat David Moyes Everton 3-1 at MHPArena, while Frankfurt recorded a 2-0 win over newly-promoted Hull City in Dreieich. There was a great atmosphere in Stuttgart as goals from Nikolas Nartey, Ramon Hendriks and Badredine Bouanani helped them to a convincing win over the club that never got relegated from the Premier League. However, Dan-Axel Zagadous early substitution raised concern as the Frenchman has been struggling with injuries for years. Burkardt scored the opening goal in the first-half with the assist coming straight from goalkeeper Kaua Santos.Swedish youngster Arrhov sealed the win with a well-taken strike in the 71st minute. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPanthers fans react to Luke Kuechly being enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of FameWhen it comes to the Carolina Panthers, there are four greats who stand out above all others. Cam Newton was the best quarterback in franchise history and their only Most Valuable Player award winner. Wide receiver Steve Smith captured the hearts of fans more than any other team legend. And the quiet giant Julius Peppers performed at a high level longer than anyone else. All that being said, the guy who played his own position better than anyone else ever did was Luke Kuechlyarguably the best off-ball linebacker of his generation. While his career was cut short due to head injuries, Kuechly was a one-of-a-kind competitor and performer. He was so special that he drew comps not to other all-time great defenders, but to comic book characters and superheroes. The most common was Captain America, a decent comparison for Kuechly's class act off the field. On the field, he was more of a ferocious Wolverine, though - who had a bit of psychic ability thrown in for good measure. That dynamic made Kuechly an all-time favorite for the Panthers and their fanswho are in celebration mode as No. 59 officially went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame today at a ceremony in Canton. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMStephen A. Smith calls for one-year suspensions for Kawhi Leonard, Steve BallmerCredit: First TakePablo Torre dropped his latest bombshell on Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers and this one may be a gamechanger. After initially reporting that Leonard had a sponsorship deal with Aspiration that appeared to circumvent the NBA salary cap, Torre found a similar agreement with tech company Daktronics, the manufacturer of the Intuit Dome scoreboard. The second questionable deal is increasing the avalanche of pressure on the Clippers, owner Steve Ballmer, and the entire league over what happens next. And on Fridays episode ofFirst Take, Stephen A. Smith gave his verdict. He suggested that both Ballmer and Leonard should be banned for a year. The Clippers are in a world of trouble It should be entertained that Kawhi Leonard should be banned for a year. @stephenasmith comments on the controversy surrounding Kawhi Leonards sponsorship deal pic.twitter.com/6CJLpyH3mm First Take (@FirstTake) August 7, 2026This is egregious if its true. If its true, were talking about banishment for Steve Ballmer as far as Im concerned for at least a year. It should be entertained that Kawhi Leonard should be banned for a year. He just took the money, but damn that, Smith said. The deal with Aspiration, thats a green banking company thats at the center of the NBA investigation going on now. To learn that you might have had another sponsorship deal worth millions of dollars with Daktronics? So you had not one but a couple of companies funneling money to you? To circumvent the salary cap with you getting this money but you also getting these additional dollars on the side illegally, because according to NBA bylaws, you aint supposed to be doing this? Nah, you cant go for that.Stephen A. Smith had Pablo Torre on his podcast and echoed the sentiment that the hammer should come down on both Kawhi Leonard and the Cippers. Not only did he again suggest a one-year suspension for Leonard and Ballmer, but taking draft picks away from the Cilppers and voiding Leonards contract altogether.Stephen A. Smith says the NBA needs to NUKE Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers if the cap circumvention allegations are true: Void Kawhis contract Ban Kawhi from playing next season Strip draft picks from the Clippers Ban Steve Ballmer from attending games https://t.co/EYBGciG2MKpic.twitter.com/laWQzMCuQX NBABase (@TheNBABase) August 7, 2026The NBA investigation into Steve Ballmer, Kawhi Leonard, and the Los Angeles Clippers has been going on for far too long. And now that theres another completely independent company who seems to have a similar scheme with Daktronics joining Aspiration, it represents the worst case scenario for the league office. Adam Silver and company have to be wondering how many more side deals is Pablo Torre going to unearth that circumvented the salary cap?If Stephen A. Smith is going to call for this severe punishment for both Ballmer and Leonard, you can only imagine what is happening in the league itself when they may have learned about the reported Daktronics deal for the first time. Its not just Leonards proposed trade to the Toronto Raptors that hangs in the balance, but his basketball future as well. The post Stephen A. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMScott McLaughlin urges patience as David Malukas chases IndyCar titleMotorsport photoAs theIndyCar Series enters its closing stretch, Team Penske veteran Scott McLaughlin believes the key to aiding teammate David Malukas in his championship pursuit against points leader Alex Palou comes down to flawless execution and a collective team effort.Malukas currently sits 83 points behind four-time and reigning series champion Palou in the overall standings, facing his first true title fight inIndyCar. Drawing on his own championship experience, McLaughlins advice is simple: ignore the points and focus on execution.Firstly, one race at a time for everybody," said McLaughlin, 33. "Just take it as it comes, especially in this series these days, how competitive it is."While Malukas has battled for championships during his junior formula career, notably finishing runner-up to Kyle Kirkwood for the 2021 Indy NXT title, an IndyCar title fight presents a different level of pressure. McLaughlin, who has finished third in theIndyCar championship twice (2023-24), emphasized that building the composure needed for these moments takes time on track.Scott McLaughlin, Team PenskeScott McLaughlin, Team Penske"Yeah, for him, different championship cars throughout the years in different categories," McLaughlin said. "It's about trying not to really focus on the points, just worry about execution, the rest will take care of itself. But it's hard to beat experience in that spot. He'll just gain it this year and continue to get better."From an organizational standpoint, Team Penskes objective remains singular: secure victories for the organization, regardless of which driver takes the checkered flag. Whether the push comes from McLaughlin, Malukas, or teammate Josef Newgarden, the collective effort remains focused on delivering results for the team."From a team perspective, yeah, for sure, we want a Penske car to win, regardless if it's myself, Malukas or Josef," McLaughlin said. "We're going to be working hard as a team to make that happen. We'll figure that out as time goes on. That's always been the mantra here."David Malukas, Team PenskeDavid Malukas, Team PenskePenske could also use different strategies across its three cars to maximise its chances of placing one ahead of Palou. Pointing to a recent race in Nashville where Penske split tactics by pitting early with one car while others stayed out McLaughlin explained that covering all bases is a standard team approach."I think we always try to make sure a Penske car wins. We always cover all bases," McLaughlin said. "You try and cover all the bases to make sure we can at least get one car in front of the 10 or something like that. We just take that as circumstantial, and that will be decided between the strategists really more than the drivers."Read Also:Will Power praises Andretti team chemistry as 2027 lineup locks inAlex Palou, Alexander Rossi to give IndyCars IR-28 its first track testWhat we learned inside a first look of IndyCars clean-sheet IR-28 revolutionTo read more Motorsport.com articles visit our website.0 Komentáře 0 Sdílení 176 Shlédnutí 0 Hodnocení
