NEW YORK (AP) The surging New York Liberty will face Indiana on Tuesday night in a marquee WNBA matchup that will see the Fever at full strength after the league rescinded a technical foul against Caitlin Clark that would have kept her out.Clark picked up her eighth technical of the season on Saturday, the number that triggers a one-game suspension, but league officials quickly rescinded it.New York has won four straight games and seven of its last eight thanks to strong play from its top three players Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu. The trio has been taking turns leading the Liberty during the recent hot streak that's bumped them up to seventh place in the standings but just two games behind third-place Las Vegas.The Liberty are coming off a 40-point win over the defending champion Aces on Sunday. The Aces rested stars A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young as it was the second half of a brutal back-to-back for Las Vegas.It doesnt matter whos playing on the other side, we understand we needed to win, Ionescu said. It doesnt matter, we wanted to go out. We wanted to execute, we wanted to play our brand of basketball, knowing every game is important and this game isnt going to have an asterisk by it because those players didnt play. It's something that he stays patient and in that deep ball rep that we had the other day of him running and saying you got to take it all the way to the ground.Defensive coordinator Chris Shula has loved the way the star wide receivers has challenged his star cornerback."It seems like mutual respect to me. Especially (wide receiver Davante Adams) and Puka, when (cornerback Trent McDuffie) is covering those guys, you see Trent's right on them, they make a great catch, you almost see them fist bump after, Shula said. Sometimes Trent gets a PBU, you can just tell the respect they have for each other, and they're pushing each other to be better every single day."McDuffie isnt the only secondary member garnering attention for his play as safety Kamren Kitchens has been a player who has played well throughout camp catching the eye of coach McVay.He's been really good. He's had great range. He's dropping down in a man coverage and ended up being able to play visual and overlap, McVay said. You can see he's healthy, he's feeling good. Whether he's playing in the deep part of the field or the intermediate, you feel him, he's flashing. I've been really pleased with Kam.With the improvement in the back end veteran safety Quentin Lake still understands that the play upfront will help them excel.Our job really is just to not [expletive] up, honestly," Lake said. "All the attention is on them. Your back end is, honestly, as good as your rush. If you have guys up there that can get to the quarterback quickly, that can stop the run and rush the passer, it makes our job incredibly easy."Lake came into the camp fully healthy after offseason elbow surgery and has taken on a leadership role in camp as the group's most experienced returning piece. His voice has been heard throughout camp getting guys in the right place and being a coach-like figure on the field for the defense.With talented players and great communication in the secondary the sky is the limit for a group that will be important to slow down some of the best offenses in football that can be found in the NFC.

For the first time in what feels like recorded history Shohei Ohtani isnt the betting favorite to win the award. While there is still a lot of season left, the man who is arguably still the best player in the world looks like he will fail to win an MVP award for the first time since 2022 and only the second time this decade. To be completely fair, this has almost nothing to do with Ohtani. The Dodgers do-everything superstar is having a great season. He is leading the N.L. in OPS and OPS+ while sporting a 1.79 ERA and .946 ERA. Looking at the full picture of his career this is far from a step back in his surefire Hall of Fame career. But an injury suffered in early July has kept him off the mound for more than a month and may prevent him from pitching again until the postseason. For now the Dodgers will just have to settle for him being an outrageously elite hitter. But with that tiniest of cracks, a new contender has emerged. Pete Crow-Armstrong, the 24-year old centerfielder for the Chicago Cubs, is having a career year. The All-Star has an MLB-leading 7.5 WAR and will almost certainly reach the 30/30 mark again this season (needing only four more home runs, he could do it this week) with the 40/40 club still an outside possibility. But like Ohtani, PCA isnt in poll-position for MVP just because of his work at the plate. He is an elite outfielder. He set the record this season for most five-star outfield catches, a stat counting each time an outfielder makes a catch with a 25% or worse catch probability. The defending Gold Glove winner will likely win his second award this season.What Ohtani and Crow-Armstrong are doing is nothing short of historic. There are other players who would be in the MVP conversation in a normal season, including Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber who leads the N.L. in home runs and Milwaukee Brewers ace pitcher Jacob Misiorowski who looks like a lock for Cy Young.In this weeks Reacts question, we want to know who you think will actually win the award this year? Going to the polar opposite, the Great Alaska Shootout finished second with 38%, while the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D., tabbed the remaining 13%.So, why was Maui so popular?Well, its a tropical destination. It has history. And it usually has big names. Plus, the court design is awesome. Nothing says Thanksgiving week quite like seeing that Hawaiian-inspired design.Maui has just about everything.Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina and UConn have all won the crown in Hawaii. But were not here to talk about those blue bloods.First off, Division-II Chaminade, who is the host of the tournament, has participated nearly every year.We celebrate the Silverswords run to the title game in the inaugural Maui Invitational in 1984, losing to Providence by just a single bucket, 60-58.The best Maui tournament for mid-majors was 2003. The only time two mid-majors met in the championship game as Dayton beat Hawaii.But there have been many other occasions in which mid-majors made the final.New Mexico reached the final in 1986. BYU, who was in the WAC at the time, was the only mid-major to make the championship in the 1990s when the Cougars lost to Duke in 92. Similarly, Ball State fell in the 2001 final to the Blue Devils.Mid-majors advancing to the championship has increased in frequency over the last decade and a half.Butler, in its one year in the A-10, lost to Illinois in the final in 2012. San Diego State came in second to Arizona by a bucket in 2014. An even slimmer margin was Wichita States defeat in 2017 when the Shockers lost to Notre Dame by a single point.Two years later, Dayton was back in the title game. The Flyers took Kansas to overtime but ultimately fell. Saint Marys came runner-up to Wisconsin in 2021. Finally, Memphis notched a second-place finish to Auburn, who went on to be the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, in the 2024 edition of the Maui Invitational.It should be fun this year when VCU and Colorado State hit the court in Maui Nov. 23-25. The Cubs have, at this writing, a 98.8 percent chance of making the postseason, per baseball-reference.com.I concur with that! And so, I present to you the schedule of postseason games. Hopefully the Cubs can go on a nice run and theyll need many dates in October.The schedule, though, begins in late September with the Wild Card Series:As you can see, the Wild Card round has moved from ESPN to various NBC networks. I would think, though its not official yet, that games would be carried on NBCs over-the-air channels in the teams home markets.Heres the Division Series schedule:The League Championship series will begin on Sunday, Oct.11:National League Division Series and the NLCS will be on Fox channels this year.The World Series, also on Fox-TV, will begin Friday, Oct. 23, and if it goes seven games, the last game will be on Halloween:The Cubs have their work cut out for them, but its certainly not impossible that theyll play deep into October this year.
