SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal vs. Como Preseason match threadLONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 09: New signing Bruno Guimaraes of Arsenal is presented to the fans ahead of the pre-season friendly match between Arsenal FC and Borussia Dortmund at Emirates Stadium on August 09, 2026 in London, England. (Photo by Catherine Ivill - AMA/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesArsenal host Como in the final preseason match of the summer. After today, its Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday. The Premier League season opens with Arsenal hosting Coventry City on Friday, August 21st. Were almost there. The England and Spain World Cup contingent have returned to training theyre in the images published by the club but its not clear if theyll feature today. William Saliba will be out for a while recovering from a back fracture. Jurrien Timber is weeks away as he recovers from the groin problem that kept him out of the World Cup. Id expect Bruno Guimaraes to make his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt today. Now is the time for Mikel Arteta and his squad to be making their final preparations for the long season ahead and putting themselves in the best position to hit the ground running. Whether that is accomplished by getting as many first choice players game situation minutes or progressing them back into the swing of things with limited time is a question best answered by the significant amounts of information, data, and health / fitness assessments available to the club and not to us. Basically what Im saying is we shouldnt read anything into who plays and for how long. One thing I would keep an eye on (and take with appropriate preseason grains of salt) is who looks good individually. The team stuff will come when the right combinations of players are on the field together. So far this preseason, Kai Havertz, Chritos Tzolis, and Martin degaard have looked particularly good. Max Dowman is playing well and pushing for more regular involvement once the season starts. Ethan Nwaneri put in a solid performance against Dortmund after being disappointingly anonymous earlier in preseason.Lineups will be posted when available. For most of yall, the match will be available to stream on Arsenals YouTube channel. If it isnt, check here for where it is being shown in your region.0 Comments 0 Shares 91 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COM3 questions for the 49ers at WR: Can this group stay healthy? No position has been more volatile over the past couple of years for the San Francisco 49ers than wide receiver.Oddly enough, from 2019-2024, the position was maybe the sturdiest of all position groups, with some variation of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Jauan Jennings leading. But now, just two years removed from that, the 49ers have a completely new receiving corps, with only Samuel left, but after a quick departure for a cup of coffee (one bound to make Aiyuk jealous) with Washington. With so much change at the position over the last two seasons, theres bound to be plenty of questions. Lets ask just three of those questions today:Can the position group stay healthy? What the 49ers offense was able to do in 2025 with the multiple fires at receiver it had to put out is nothing short of remarkable. It started with what seemed to be a normal recovery window for Brandon Aiyuk after his 2024 knee injury, which then devolved into the star receiver going AWOL in a situation still not yet resolved. Ricky Pearsall was supposed to take his next step and showed that promise when he was on the field, but a knee injury held him to just nine games, and the lingering effects of the injury have cost Pearsall the 2026 season.Jauan Jennings was solid throughout the season, but the receiving corps struggled with Kendrick Bourne and DeMarcus Robinson playing key roles in the absences of Aiyuk and Pearsall. Not-a-wide-receiver Christian McCaffrey is who kept the position afloat, with his first 100-catch season since 2019.Wholesale changes came over the offseason with the 49ers signing veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk, while using the teams first draft selection on DeZhaun Stribling to shore up the unit. But Evans isnt getting any younger and has dealt with some nagging injuries the last few seasons, while Kirk missed nine games just two years ago with a broken collarbone, and a calf injury has kept him out of training camp the past few weeks. On paper, the 49ers receiving corps is much better compared to what it was last year, but the moves made over the offseason didnt exactly fend off the concerns of high-injury potential at the position. What can be expected from Deebo Samuel? With the news of Pearsall being out for the season, the 49ers wasted no time in setting up the reunion with Deebo Samuel. While its fun to rekindle the memories of what Samuel meant to the 49ers in his first stint, it would be downright insane to think that that version of Deebo Samuel could make an appearance in 2026. While the role of an all-use offensive weapon might be reprised, it will be on a far lesser scale for a now 30-year-old Samuel.Samuel was brought in as the replacement for Pearsall, but his role will be vastly different; I think he was brought in more as a reprieve for the injuries in the running back group than for the receiving corps. The best-case scenario for Samuel is being the No. 3 receiver on the team, behind Evans and Stribling, while theres even a chance somebody like Kirk or Robinson could out-target him. But the role is already laid out: hes likely to step into some spots where McCaffrey would have been used last season out of necessity. Because of Deebo, instead of forcing a top-three running back in the league to it, you can use a player like Samuel to take some of the unnecessary wear-and-tear McCaffrey took in 2025.He likely wont be near the 90-touch plateau hes been at the last few seasons, but Samuels role will be an important one, especially if he can take some of the workload off of McCaffrey with roughly the same production. What is the first-year ceiling for DeZhaun Stribling? There has been no player on the 49ers whose stock has grown over the first few weeks of training camp like Stribling. Part of that growth has come from Stribling himself, while some factors around him certainly havent hurt his cause. When the 49ers made Stribling the 33rd selection in last Aprils draft, the pick certainly turned some heads. Not even factoring that Stribling wasnt considered a top receiver in the draft at the time, the pick was head-scratching with the then-recent signings of Evans and Kirk, with Pearsall expected to be ready to play. In essence, the 49ers used their top pick on a player who would enter camp as the teams No. 4 receiver. As things tend to do in the NFL, the situation changed. Kirk has dealt with an injury that has kept him out of camp, and Pearsall has been lost for the 2026 season. Those injuries alone have launched Stribling into the conversation to be the 49ers No. 2 receiver entering the regular season.Players typically dont earn spots due to injury in the NFL, but Striblings play during training camp has done the most to earn him the consideration for the spot behind Evans. Its tough to go a day reading training camp reports without some sort of mention of Striblings performance. While we have seen players, specifically receivers (think Trent Sherfield), jump off the page with solid training camp performances, its hard to not be excited for what Stribling can be with how much he has meshed with the 49ers since drafted.0 Comments 0 Shares 91 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBen Simmons showed off improved shooting in NBA comeback run, and this time its definitely realBen Simmons is trying to make an NBA comeback at 30 years old after injuries kept him out of the league last season. The forward is training with the Australian national mens basketball team in private runs this week with the hope of making the 2028 Olympic roster, and as videos from those sessions start to circulate, its time for one of modern basketballs greatest late offseason traditions. It feels like every offseason features videos of Simmons showing off an improved outside shooting stroke. This of course never actually holds when the games matter, as Simmons has made just five three-pointers in 383 career NBA games. I was worried that wed never get another mid-August video of Simmons stroking jumpers in a pickup run again after his career stalled out last year, but I was wrong! Watch a shirtless Simmons connect from deep in the video below:Ben simmons est treinando com a seleo da Austrlia estamos voltando pic.twitter.com/rLxZiDaqc6 Goat of Austrlia (@criticonordest) August 11, 2026Simmons has legitimately never recovered from refusing to take an open dunk during Game 7 of the 2021 Eastern Conference playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks. Simmons was named an All-Star for the third consecutive season that year, but his body started to break down after repeated back and nerve injuries, and hes never been able to rediscover his best level. Videos of Simmons ripping jumpers in pickup runs have been circulating for a decade. Heres a video from July 2019:View this post on InstagramHeres Simmons ripping jumpers in offseason training sessions from 2021:Ben Simmons from 3???(Via @overtime)pic.twitter.com/aY2LspbpkR NBA Quick Report (@NBAquickreport) August 9, 2021Ben Simmons just been IN THE LAB @BenSimmons25@ChrisJHoops(via @swishcultures_) pic.twitter.com/NjUeX5LvNu Overtime (@overtime) September 25, 2021Fans clown Simmons for his broken jumper, but he was still a special talent at his peak. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Simmons was 2018 Rookie of the Year, earned two First-Team All-Defense nods, one All-NBA team, and three All-Star bids during his short prime. He was an elite defensive forward with incredible passing ability who could score in the open floor as well as any player in the league. His athleticism waned as the injuries piled up, and eventually he started to play scared offensively because he didnt want to go to the free throw line. Still, Simmons ranks No. 2 in BPM and No. 4 in win shares per 48 minutes from the 2016 draft class to this day. I wouldnt count out a Simmons comeback. He could make sense on a team like the Boston Celtics that can surround him with shooters, using him as a passing hub, and unleash him on defense. While videos of made jumpers in an empty gym will always go viral for Simmons, the big question for his potential comeback is if he can get healthy enough to defend at a high level again. Lots has changed in the NBA over the last decade, but Ben Simmons is still going viral for making threes in pickup runs. Its kind of beautiful if you think about it.0 Comments 0 Shares 89 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMShoulder surgeries have Arizona State's Adrian Wilson healthy for 2026PAYSON No one can accuse Adrian "Boogie" Wilson of not being tough.Last season, it seemed like at least once a game, the senior safety would remain down after a play, eventually heading to the sideline clutching his shoulder. Moments later, once the shoulder had been popped back into place, he would be back in the game. Anything to not have to sit on the sideline permanently. The 6-foot, 215-pound senior emerged as one of the stars of the defense in 2025, finishing fourth on the team with 57 tackles in 12 games despite having to play through pain. He had surgery on his right shoulder on Dec. 4, which prevented him from playing in the Sun Bowl against ACC champion Duke. While he would have liked to have played in that one too, he wanted to have his right shoulder repaired as soon as possible so he could start preparing for the 2026 campaign. He missed spring drills while recovering from surgery."It hurt a lot," Wilson said. "I can't lie, it was pretty painful at times, but I wanted to be able to play. Once they popped it back in, it felt better, and I was ready to go. I just never knew when it was going to happen. I just love the game, and I wanted to play."David Gibbs, who coaches ASU safeties this season after working on offense the previous two seasons, singles out Wilson as one of the more physical players in the unit. Being a physical player means he sometimes takes as much punishment as he dishes out.Gibbs says Wilson is also one of the spirited leaders of his group."He's played a lot of football," Gibbs said. "He's definitely one of those guys the others look up to. You can tell how much he wants to be out there because of the way he kept hanging in there when he was hurt. That's a difficult thing to play through." That Dec. 4 procedure was actually Wilson's second similar procedure. He underwent surgery for a torn labrum in the left shoulder after the 2024 campaign, his second season at Washington State. The procedure meant he had to miss spring drills after transferring to ASU.Wilson, who hails from Dallas, looked like he would be a serviceable backup to veteran starter Xavion Alford, but Alford played only two games before being sidelined with a back injury. At the time, ASU hoped to get Alford back at some point in the season. That never happened, so Wilson held down the spot the rest of the season, starting the last nine of the regular season. In addition to his 57 tackles in 2025, he had an interception, six pass breakups, a quarterback hurry, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. His season-high of eight tackles came in the 27-24 win at Baylor in the Big 12 opener. His fumble recovery also came in that game on Baylor's opening possession.Wilson, now 21, said that while he might have been penciled in as a backup going into the season, he was physically and mentally preparing himself for a leading role, something head coach Kenny Dillingham has always preached."They always say prepare like you're the starter before you become the starter, so for me coming in here it was always knowing that I could be the guy, and it was just a matter of time for me. I was always prepared," he said.Wilson is part of a new-look ASU secondary. The only other veteran is senior Montana Warren, who is one of the few players on the entire team in their fourth year in the program. Warren can play multiple spots in the back end of the defense. Kansas transfer Lyrik Rawls appears to be the favorite to start at the safety spot opposite Wilson.ASU will have new starters at the corner positions, with Keith Abney off to the NFL and Javan Robinson transferring. Newcomer Ashton Stamps, a transfer from LSU, and Rodney Bimage, who saw time in a reserve capacity, look to be the favorites for those spots.Wilson says this week's festivities at Camp Tontozona will provide much-needed get-to-know-you time for the group. The team held its first practice at the historic wooded venue outside of Payson on Aug. 12."A lot of people have never been camping; it depends where you're from," Wilson said. "It's an amazing chance to bond outside of being together when we're practicing at home. This will help us deepen our connection. We all contribute. We all play a part in buying in, working hard, the piece we play in the puzzle. It's a matter of putting it together."This article originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Shoulder surgeries have Arizona State's Adrian Wilson healthy for 20260 Comments 0 Shares 91 Views 0 Reviews -
