SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAs UConn keeps dancing to the Final Four, Geno Auriemma's pride shines through: 'Undefeated is a lot of baggage to carry'FORT WORTH, Texas Geno Auriemma does not say things unintentionally. There is no comment he utters that he doesnt mean, or at least that he doesnt intend to stir up a certain reaction.Sure, he admits, he says things he doesnt necessarily believe. This wasnt it.I dont know if Ive ever been prouder to take a team to the Final Four than this one, Auriemma said while accepting his 25th regional championship trophy. He capped it with a lasso line dance, settling on a proper cowboy hat, his feet surrounded by confetti and KK Arnold goading him for more.It was all the players needed to see. When he breaks out a dance move, thats how you know hes proud, Azzi Fudd said."You know people say 'that's 25 for you'. Well that's no. 1 for Blanca, no. 1 for Heckel, no. 1 for Serah Williams." - Geno Auriemma #MarchMadness x ABC / @UConnWBBpic.twitter.com/AVKJSez2wg NCAA March Madness (@MarchMadnessWBB) March 29, 2026Its a word coaches overuse this time of year. Theyre proud of their group making it to the Sweet 16. Then the Elite Eight. Theyre proud in wins and losses, in great performances and battling through bad ones.Proud is relative. Those coaches arent the winningest ones in basketball history, flipping through the Rolodex of elite talent they all envy. Theyre not the 12-time national champions. They cant even sniff a stretch of 17 Final Fours in 18 years this team is on. Auriemma and the Huskies have competed in more than half of the NCAA Final Fours held. And while devastating, when most of those other proud coaches teams lose, its not an earth-shattering travesty, leading sports shows around the country that barely devote time to the sport otherwise. So, yeah, he definitely means it when he says hes proud of them for clinching the seasons first Final Four berth in a 70-52 win over rival Notre Dame that preserved the 54-game winning streak, a 38-0 season and the Fort Worth 1 regional title.Getting all the way to this point undefeated is a lot of baggage to carry, right? Auriemma said. I mean, every day somebody is coming after you to break your streak.Auriemma does not coach quietly or calmly, even if his teams on the court exemplify it. He expects more no matter the circumstance. His alumni's stories become legendary tales that dont grow larger every time theyre told. He really did make that comment to Sue Birds teams during a heated game against Pat Summit and rival Tennessee. Yes, he literally left Breanna Stewart to run stadiums for one missed rebound. And the 8-vs-5 practices? Oh, he definitely did that. His proudest team is one of his most dominant. Its 51.1 net rating ranks third all-time behind the title teams of 2015 and 2016. Those rosters were more mature, he said, helmed in 2016 by seniors Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck. The trio won four titles in four years; the 2014 and 2016 teams went undefeated. This roster is younger after losing fifth-year seniors Paige Bueckers, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, and Kaitlyn Chen, one of UConns dozens of WNBA stars.Geno Auriemma dances with his team after securing a spot in the Final Four. (Photo by Andy Hancock/NCAA Photos/NCAA Photos via Getty Images)Andy Hancock/NCAA Photos via Getty ImagesFudd, the fifth-year senior who returned on a redshirt, is the most experienced, but its sophomore Sarah Strong who stepped into a leadership role. The forward is en route to Naismith National Player of the Year as the versatile Swiss Army Knife who, even in tough situations, can fight through for a 20-piece. KK Arnold and Ashlyn Shade were thrown into the pressure-fueled fire as freshmen on a decimated roster.Opposing coaches harp on UConns depth. North Carolina head coach Courtney Banghart was proud of her team after the Sweet 16 loss for making the Huskies go to Plan B and Plan B and Plan C and even Plan D.Theyre just that good, she said after a 63-42 loss that was closer in the first half than the final score would indicate. It was Blanca Quionez, the sneaky freshman and fearless X-factor, who stepped in as an international player wise beyond her collegiate years. Her team-high 14 first-half points served as a pressure-valve while Strong and Fudd were hounded by the Notre Dame defense. She finished with 20 and an all-tournament team nod, along with Fudd and Strong, who was named Most Outstanding Player.None of this is new. Not the Final Four berth, an accomplishment that runs business-like for the Huskies. No cut nets, no exuberance. The team flashed more smiles meeting Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving than for winning a regional title. Not the smooth-running offense resulting in 18 assists on 24 baskets. Nor the defense that limited Hannah Hidalgo, labeled by Auriemma as the best point guard in the country, by impacting her ability to get into the paint and find teammates. She went off in bursts, but never more.Six of Auriemmas UConn teams won in undefeated seasons. More reached this point unblemished, shattered when it all ended. So proud? That makes sense. Even the most demanding coaches are proud of accomplishments. But proudest? Its far from the first of his teams to handle an undefeated season at this point. Six went on to win a title unblemished, and this line dancing group hasnt even landed in Phoenix yet.Maybe because we don't walk around with that attitude, Auriemma said.Hes digging into his Rolodex now. First, its Jamelle Elliott and Jen Rizzotti of the 1995 championship team, his first. Bird, Diana Taurasi, Asjha Jones, Swin Cash and Tamika Williams won undefeated in 2002 before seven of those players went on to WNBA careers. In the 2010s, it was Maya Moore, Tina Charles and Stewart. They walked around like, what did you think we were going to lose? Why are you surprised were undefeated? Auriemma said. But Auriemma doesnt say things he doesnt mean. There is no bravado or audacious remarks on this roster. No on-court dust-ups or locker room material. This group, they don't have that kind of swagger, trash-talking kind of mentality, Auriemma said. That's why I think for me I just keep my fingers crossed because it's not the kind of team that I've had in the past that has gone this far undefeated. No, the swaggiest thing in UConns locker room is Auriemmas cowboy hat. And the most boastful remarks will be in his phone, a three-decade collection of champions asking Never been prouder? Really?0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 1 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.FOXSPORTS.COM4 Takeaways From Alex Palou's Repeat Victory at BarberBarber Motorsports Park (Leeds, Ala.) If stats dont lie, Alex Palou won the INDYCAR race Sunday by 13.2775 seconds over Christian Lundgaard. In this case, Palou says stats lie. He didnt deliver the butt-whipping that leading 79 of 90 laps and that margin of victory would indicate. Lundgaard had a slow final pit stop and with no cautions, couldnt make up the time. [BARBER HIGHLIGHTS: Alex Palou Coasts to Repeat in Alabama] "If you look at the result and you don't follow the race, the timing, maybe then you look like you were so much faster than everybody else," the driver of the Chip Ganassi No. 10 car said in his postrace news conference. "That was not the truth. "We had an amazing car. We had an amazing race. But it was not easy. It was tough." Here are my takeaways: 1. Palou Still Has It Even though hes not the season-long points leader Kyle Kirkwood, driver of the No. 27 car for Andretti Global, has a two-point lead on Palou the three-time defending series champion Palou is showing similar strength to last year. Maybe hes not that dominant, but he still has shown that when other drivers or teams make mistakes, he will make them pay. Lundgaard might have caught him and made a race of it, but Palou, even though he had to use one more set of the primary tires (the harder of the two compounds, which means they are slower but last longer) than originally planned, never had a hiccup on the 2.3-mile course. "Alex is the same Alex as last year," Lundgaard said in his postrace news conference. "I just do think there are cars and drivers that are showing up more this year than last year." 2. Lundgaard Frustration Justified Christian Lundgaard, driver of No. 7 for Arrow McLaren, lost about 10 seconds on a pit stop when the team had trouble tightening the right rear wheel. He had pitted five laps later than Palou and felt with the fresher tires and the potential to actually come out of the pits ahead of Palou, he would have had a chance to win the race. Instead, for the second consecutive year, Lundgaard finished second to Palou at Barber. [ALL ABOUT BARBER: Track the Vision of Dairy Farmer who Loved Motorsports] "With the pace and how the race panned out today, we had the car to win the race,Lundgaard said. "We had the pace, we had the track position at the time. "I'm not really sure what happened in the pit stop. ... Its unfortunate." 3. Kirkwood Still Tops Kyle Kirkwood finished fifth, good enough to retain the points lead. And considering he probably had at-best a fifth-place car, thats what champions do. And why did he finish fifth? His team executed flawlessly, and that meant a nice rebound from a subpar weekend on pit road in the previous race. "We had a really clean day on pit lane," Kirkwood told me and other reporters after that race. "That's what we had in [the first two races at] St. Pete and Phoenix. So back to normal." 4. Malukas Making It Happen David Malukas, driver of the No. 12 car, didnt feel his team chose the right tire strategy as far as when to have the harder primary tires and the softer alternate tires, but he still finished fourth. And for the second consecutive race, he was the top-finishing Penske driver. Theres something to be said for that as the replacement for Will Power is proving he is deserving of the ride as he has two top-five finishes in the first four races. "A good points day, we learned a lot, and we keep going from here.," Malukas told me and other reporters after the race. 4 . Whats Next There are two weekends off before INDYCAR returns to the track on the streets of Long Beach. The Long Beach race is traditionally one of the marquee events of the year and is the last street course until Detroit, which comes the weekend after the Indy 500. Kirkwood won that race a year ago and will be the favorite following his win on the most recent street course at Arlington. "We're going to a really good track next in Long Beach," Kirkwood said. "A couple weeks off to get our head in the game there, go into it leading the points, and hopefully do what we did last year."0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 1 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMizzou Softball sweeps Auburn in crazy affairLooking to secure their first SEC sweep of the season, the Tigers handed the ball to their respective game one Harrison-surnamed starters, CeCe and Ella, in what shaped up to be a truly crazy affair on Sunday afternoon on The Plains. In a game that featured four lead changes and a whos who of pitching rosters, the Missouri Tigers ultimately came out on top, winning 6-4.Lets see it how it all went down. Some Spring Cleaning in Auburn The Tigers complete the sweep and are officially 12-2 in their last 14 games! #MIZ | #OwnItpic.twitter.com/4UIjGrSmZ5 Mizzou Softball (@MizzouSoftball) March 29, 2026Auburn Strikes First, Ending Harrisons Day EarlyUnlike the first two games of the series, the blue & orange Tigers struck first in this one, taking a 1-0 lead in the home half that could have been a whole lot worse. An Alyssa Hastings one-out single was followed by a hit by pitch to put two on for Annalea Adams, who reached on a fielders choice. Shortstop Madison Uptegrove, trying to secure a double play, had a rare fielding error that allowed Hastings to score, unearned. How would CeCe respond to the adversity? After allowing a four-pitch walk to Haven Roebuck to load the bases, she dialed in, striking out the next two Auburn players to escape the jam. E1 | MIZ 0 AUB 1Getting out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts #MIZ | #OwnItpic.twitter.com/SwPH9O2v81 Mizzou Softball (@MizzouSoftball) March 29, 2026In the second inning, Harrison struck out Ratliff, her third K in a row, before a sharp play by Uptegrove, making up for her earlier miscue, got the second out. After a single that the second base(wo)man Smith couldnt make a play on, Hastings flied out to left for the final out. In the third, after a flyout to the center field warning track and a subsequent single to right, head coach Larissa Anderson made the change to Abby Carr for a bit of a different look. After inducing a flyout, MaNia Womack singled through the left side to put two on for Kyla Stroud. After advancing the runners on a passed ball, she walked to load the bases for freshman Ava Ratliff, whose two-run single to left allowed Auburn to re-gain the lead, 3-2. A slow roller to third ended the threat. Mizzou Offense Reemerges Kind OfSidney Forrester coaxed a two-out single to right in the top of the first, but a popout stopped any sort of momentum. In the second, Sophie Smith worked a 9-pitch one out walk before Uptegrove hit into a fielders choice that took the lead runner out at second. A strikeout ended the threat again. In the third, after a groundout, Addy Waits walked on four straight pitches before Stefania Abruscato struck again with her second homerun in back-to-back days and sixth of the season, giving the black & gold Tigers the lead 2-1. A groundout and flyout ended the Tiger threat.T3 | MIZ 2 AUB 1Make that five home runs in eight games for @StefaniaAbrusc1 #MIZ | #OwnItpic.twitter.com/KYPc0oGMSJ Mizzou Softball (@MizzouSoftball) March 29, 2026In the fourth, the Malveauxs made a pitching change of their own, removing Harrison for statuesque freshman Charley Butler (7.18 ERA in 12.2 IP) shes 6-foot, just like Carr. Carr, still in the game as a two-way player, hit a bloop single to center before being replaced on the basepaths by Saniya Hill, who took second on Smiths sac bunt. A fielding error by the pitcher allowed Kayley Lenger to reach first and Hill to take third, advanced the runners to scoring position, but when faced with a golden opportunity against a pretty green pitcher, the Tigers were unable to produce, with Claire Cahalan striking out looking to end the Tigers best chance to plate some more runs.Auburn Offense Refuses to Go QuietlyIn the home-half of the fourth, Auburns offense continued to show signs of life with a leadoff single to left before a groundout advanced the runner the second. A weird decision by Uptegrove, going for a non-force out at third instead of grabbing the surefire out at first, resulted in an offline throw which allowed runners at the corners and yet another pitching change Marissa McCann. McKaela Walker, aboard due to the aforementioned botched fielders choice, then stole second. What happened next Im a bit confused by, as Auburn runners tagged up and scored to take a 4-2 lead on a foul ball to left caught by a stealthy Cahalan. Should she have just let it drop foul to prevent the runners from tagging? I guess? An infield popup stopped the blue & orange Tigers in its tracks.Wildness EnsuesIn the top of the fifth, Auburn countered with yet another new pitcher, Abby Herndon (5.75 ERA in 34 IP), who allowed a hit by pitch to Waits before an Abruscato groundout allowed her to move to second (and then third on a passed ball). After a strikeout for the second out, Abby Hay hit a bouncer up the middle, bringing in Waits to score and make it that much closer, 4-3. Other Abby (Carr) then smacked her ninth home run to center, allowing Missouri to regain the lead, 5-4. This game was drunk, you guys.T5 | MIZ 5 AUB 4BACK ON TOP #MIZ | #OwnItpic.twitter.com/yQAm0h1wS2 Mizzou Softball (@MizzouSoftball) March 29, 2026When asked postgame about the difficulty in transitioning from hitter to pitcher then back to pitcher, Carr said, I think staying focused on each task and my teammates having my back and supporting me in both my roles I think whats really helpful, and I think thats why Im so successful is because of them.Playing against the shift, Smith was able to leg out a single when there was no one left to cover the bag, but Uptegrove grounded out to end the threat. In the bottom of the fifth, after a groundout, Stroud singled through the left side before a walk to Ratliff put two on with one out, but the next two Auburn batters fouled out, leaving the Good Tigers on top.Another Pitching Change? Why Not?In case you were keeping track of pitching this game, we saw what basically amounted to both teams entire roster of pitching, and the sixth was no exception. Game 2 loser, SJ Geurin, was brought in to face pinch hitter Nevaeh Watkins, who struck out, before Cahalan, with just her fifth hit of the season, tripled to right. Waits followed with a sharply hit single down the line in right field, easily allowing Cahalan to score and provide an insurance run, making it 6-4, before a groundout and line out ended it.The Tigers wisely stuck with their pitching in the sixth and seventh, with McCann going 1-2-3 in both innings to secure their first SEC series sweep since 2024. The announcers spoke with Carr postgame, who commended the teams bench depth. Each person is willing to step up at any moment, she said. I think really shows the grit this team has.To Review7 pitchers, 4 lead changes, 15 hits, 13 stranded. It was a day for the big cats. Auburn utilized four pitchers in this one: Harrison (3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) | Butler (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) | Herndon (1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 K) | Geurin (1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K)Mizzou used three: Harrison (2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) | Carr (1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB) | McCann (3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K)UP NEXT: The Tigers return home to Columbia to face another set of Tigers, this time of the purple & gold variety, when they welcome LSU (23-12, 4-8 SEC) for a Thursday-Saturday series. I will be in Lexington for NCAA Gymnastics Regionals, so my colleagues Dylan & True will be manning the recaps at Rock M Nation.I think this was a huge success coming out, winning three games and going back home to host LSU next weekend, coming off the big win, and getting one at Alabama last weekend as well. It helped us bring momentum into this weekend, Carr said.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 8 Visualizações 0 Anterior
