Rams-Chiefs preseason Week 1 game thread
The Los Angeles Rams travel to take on the Kansas City Chiefs for some preseason Week 1 NFL action. This game will not be Matthew Stafford vs. Patrick Mahomes. That should come later in the regular season. This game will apparently feature some Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson, so theres a lot to watch for Rams fans on Saturday.Similar to the Rams, the Chiefs also may be rolling out some quarterbacks that KC and other NFL teams will want to see. You never know which of these players will make a strong enough impression to stick with their current roster or find themselves with a real chance to play elsewhere. For the Rams, their QB situation is seemingly still being figured out as far as who will be the official backup to the Matthew Stafford in 2026. There is a chance that the true backup for 2026 isnt on the roster, yet. However, Bennett and Simpson should get the chance to show they are ready starting against the Chiefs. Now, its preseason, so take it with a grain of salt, but all you can do is play in the situation you are in, and though its preseason, its assumed that Bennett and Simpson will want to play well. That aside, if you are going to make mistakes, make your mistakes in practice and in preseason, and learn from them. So, will we learn anything from this matchup? Both teams and fanbases should learn something, but will those lessons learned impact the regular season? We dont know yet. Either way, enjoy todays game. This will be the only game thread, so hang out here as long as youd like! Comment away! And know that we are getting closer and closer to live NFL action.

REPORT: Tottenham monitoring Chelseas Nico Jackson
TOPSHOT - Bayern Munich's Senegalese forward #11 Nicolas Jackson celebrates after scoring his team's fourth goal during the UEFA Champions League last 16, first leg football match between Atalanta and Bayern Munich at the Gewiss stadium in Bergamo, on March 10, 2026. (Photo by Alberto PIZZOLI / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty ImagesHey everyone! First the match recap and notes will be coming a little bit later, so thanks for your patience with that. Dont worry, weve got it and in time for tomorrows OTHER friendly against Hoffenheim. But first, heres some transfer news. French football journalist Fabrice Hawkins is reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are one of three clubs, along with Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid, who are monitoring Senegal and Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson as an option in whats left of the transfer window. Aston Villa, Tottenham and Atltico Madrid are among the clubs monitoring Nicolas Jackson. Chelsea value Jackson at 60m (69m), a figure currently proving a major obstacle pic.twitter.com/FWFNfzK3kB Fabrice Hawkins (@FabriceHawkins) August 15, 2026This comes on the heels of a report from a couple of weeks ago in the Mail that Spurs were considering a move for Jackson, a report that was quickly rubbished by several prominent English journos, including Alasdair Gold. This one feels a little different Fabrice Hawkins is a pretty reliable journalist, especially for French (or Franco empire/diaspora) players. The fee is substantial 60m but less than the 70m reportedly solicited by Liverpool for Cody Gakpo, and Jackson is three years younger AND a natural striker.I already said the first time why Id consider Jackson as an option for Tottenham as an attacking reinforcement and so I wont go over that again feel free to click through if you want. This does, however, smack of a potential plan B rather than a primary option. Spurs are clearly still prioritizing Savinho and Gakpo this summer, but it sounds like PSG are demanding stupid money for Liverpool to buy Bradley Barcola, and Id guess they wont want to let Gakpo go if they cant get Barcola in. So Spurs are likely just preparing to pivot to another target if things fall through over Gakpo, and Jackson is likely one of the options there. And the 60m fee that Hawkins mentions is actually less than the 65m reported by the Mail ten days ago. I know hes Chelsea and has scored against us many times blah blah blah but honestly I think Jackson is an underrated transfer in this window and I really am not sure why more teams arent taking a look at him. He underperforms his xG, but he gets shots in the box, and thats pretty important. Id absolutely take him as an option, especially in De Zerbis system, and I bet a lot of the people holding their nose will be okay with him the moment his first goal goes into the back of the net.Again, this is likely a backup plan, so lets keep it in our pocket for now.

Longhorns scrimmage devastated by flu bug, inconsistent Manning
Saturday's Texas Longhorns scrimmage was supposed to be the first time coach Steve Sarkisian got to see his team in full pads under game conditions. There are also some key position battles that were supposed to be decided. Instead, the practice has turned into a M.A.S.H. unit with several key players were out with the flu. Sark said the flu bug has ripped through the team this week. Many are still dealing with the bug and couldn't participate in today's simulated game practice. Wide receiver Daylan McCutcheon, defensive lineman Justus Terry, edge/linebacker Brad Spence, linebacker Rasheem Biles, linebacker TyAnthony Smith and cornerback John Meredith all sat out. That is especially tough on two players that were hoping to elevate their standing within the depth chart. Terry and Smith are both trying to secure a starting spot before the season opener against Texas State on Sept. 5. It is hard on Biles too who is still adjusting to his new team. Sarkisian says the team was hit by the flu bug a bit heading into scrimmage #1:Notable guys out today per Sark:Rasheem Biles Brad Spence Justus Terry TyAnthony Smith Daylan McCutcheon John Meredith III CJ Vogel (@CJVogel_OTF) August 15, 2026Sarkisian also held out Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Emmett Mosley and quarterback Arch Manning after the first series before inserting them again for a red-zone possession prior to their return for the second half. It resulted in what Sarkisian described as an up and down performance by Manning.I dont think thats really indicative of him being out in the spring, said Sarkisian. I thought hes had a great first week and a half of training camp. Ive been extremely impressed. Probably wasnt as fair to him today. I wanted them to almost feel like an NFL preseason game one. But at the same token, when we went to thud tempo and it wasnt live, I wanted to try to get him reps, and those reps didnt come until the second half. So I think he can play cleaner than he played today, and a little bit more efficient, a little bit more accurate, but there were also some high-level plays that were made, too.Follow us on X/Twitter at@LonghornsWireand@TreyLuerssenfor more. This article originally appeared on Longhorns Wire: Longhorns scrimmage devastated by flu bug, inconsistent Manning

Nothing expected Martinelli not considering moving to Turkiye
Nothing expected Martinelli not considering moving to TurkiyeGabriel Martinelli is the subject of transfer interest from Galatasaray after they failed to sign Rafa Leao, but the Arsenal man does not want to leave and certainly does not want to move to Turkiye. In recent seasons, Martinellis form has not been the best, and there is a good chance that he will remain on the bench for Christos Tzolis to start games at Arsenal. That happened several times last season, when Leandro Trossard was preferred to the Brazilian winger, but the Belgian has been sold and replaced by the Greek star.Although Arsenal are interested in players such as Bradley Barcola, the Gunners will stick with Martinelli if he stays, but they are more than happy to sell him to Gala.Martinelli Rejects Galatasaray InterestThe Turkish side can also offer him a good salary, which could be much better than what he earns at Arsenal at the moment, but he does not want to move to the Turkish club.Martinelli appears determined to continue his career elsewhere rather than in Turkiye if he eventually leaves Arsenal. Despite the potential financial benefits of a move, the Brazilian winger has no desire to join Galatasaray at this stage of his career. The situation leaves Arsenal with a decision to make over his future. The Gunners could keep him if he remains at the club, but they are also open to selling him if the right opportunity arrives.Romano Provides Update on MartinelliFabrizio Romano has delivered an update on his future and says Nothing expected to happen in the upcoming weeks with Turkish clubs, including Galatasaray because Martinelli simply will not move to that country at this stage of his career. The update suggests Galatasaray are unlikely to make progress in their pursuit of the Arsenal winger in the near future. Martinellis preference appears clear, despite the Turkish clubs ability to offer him an attractive salary. If Arsenal do not offer him a new contract by the end of the season, he will have a year left on his deal and could then decide to leave for another club.Martinellis future therefore remains uncertain, but a move to Galatasaray does not appear to be an option he is considering. Arsenal will have to decide whether to renew his contract or allow his situation to develop as he approaches the final year of his current agreement._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow. You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. Everything Josh Heupel said about Vols' quarterbacks after scrimmage
No. 18 Tennessee held its first football scrimmage in fall training camp on Saturday. Rankings reflect the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll.Good work today inside the stadium, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said after Saturday's scrimmage. Scrimmage, a lot of situational football, from special teams to different field zones, offense and defense. A lot of really good work. Some things that, obviously, we got to continue to clean up. Some young guys that did some really good things, but some young guys that got to continue to grow and be ready to play championship level football here as you get ready to play this season.A lot of positives, but we got to continue to grow here. A lot of work left here in the next three weeks to get ready to go play."The Vols have a starting quarterback competition during fall camp with sophomore George MacIntyre and freshman Faizon Brandon.Heupel discussed Tennessee's starting quarterback competition following Saturday's scrimmage at Neyland Stadium. Everything the sixth-year head coach said is listed below. On his evaluation of George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon in the scrimmage setting"Today, couple communication, just handling some things early in the scrimmage that I think we can improve upon. I thought as the scrimmage went on, both played at a really high level. Made some plays down the field. Worked through their progressions, you know, we worked four minute today. Some things we can learn in that."All in all, a positive day. Both of those guys have had good training camps. In general, they've taken really good care of the football. They've continued to grow and mastering what we're doing, and the control and command that you have to have at the quarterback position, but for both of them, just like our football team, there's a lot of growth to be ready to go play Week 1."On the competitiveness of the quarterback competition"I like the growth from both of those guys. They've had really positive days, positive plays. They've all had one that they probably would do a little bit different. The fundamentals and technique continue to get better, understanding of what we're doing. I just want to see them continue to grow here over the next couple weeks."On not making the same mistake twice and how that has applied to the quarterbacks"I feel like those guys have continued to grow. The multiple looks that they see from our defense in drop back, and play action, and our run game, RPO game, they continue to take a lot of steps and are doing some really good things in the decision-making process."On if he feels things are any clearer after the first scrimmage in the quarterback battle"I already named him out there, you guys didn't pay attention? I'm kidding. No, I want to go watch the tape. You know what I mean? There's a lot to learn from for everybody and certainly the quarterback room, too."More: Vols' quarterback battle: 'Nobody's going to earn it, lose it day one'Follow Vols Wire onFacebookandX(formerly Twitter). This article originally appeared on Vols Wire: Everything Josh Heupel said about Vols' quarterbacks after scrimmage

All Blacks storm past the Bulls 50-19 in final tune-up for South Africa tests
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) New Zealand passed its last examination before the eagerly awaited test series against world champion South Africa when the Bulls were dispatched 50-19 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. The All Blacks dominated to lead 24-0 at halftime and perhaps their first match at altitude contributed to a closer, more back and forth second half. They still racked up eight tries, with doubles for wingers Josh Moorby and Leroy Carter and captain Codie Taylor, while conceding their first points in more than two hours across the tour matches against the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls.Only a few of the New Zealand side were expected to line up in the first test next Saturday in Johannesburg, but valuable experience was gained by the wider squad whose depth will be plumbed during the grueling run of four tests on four straight weekends. The likes of flanker Anton Segner, the returning Taylor and center Rieko Ioane impressed for New Zealand in an expansive, entertaining affair. While the Bulls were the best provincial side the All Blacks will face on tour, like the first two opponents they were a shadow of their true selves. They were not match fit, had not played since June 19 in their third consecutive United Rugby Championship final, and had to cut short their offseason break. But their up-tempo, ambitious style similar to the All Blacks netted three tries, all in the second half.___See APs full rugby coverage here

Best and worst defensive PFF grades for Patriots in tie with Colts
There wasn't much offense in Thursday's preseason opener between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. The unit was held to only 13 points, with multiple failed drives and missed field goals. However, it was a much different outcome on the defensive side of the ball. Like the Patriots, the Colts didn't play their starters in the game, but they did play former starting quarterback Anthony Richardson, who turned the ball over twice against New England's backups. One of the turnovers came on an interception by Patriots cornerback Kindle Vildor, and the other was on a play made by veteran linebacker K.J. Britt, who chased Richardson down and punched the ball free for a fumble. The defense forced two more turnovers later in the game, including another fumble recovery and interception by safety John Saunders Jr. They did a much better job of limiting Richardson and backup quarterback Riley Leonard through the air than they did in slowing down the Colts' ground game. That is obviously something Vrabel is going to look to improve for next week, with another mobile quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller Jalen Hurts, coming to town for joint practices and the Week 2 preseason game. Here are the highest and lowest graded defensive players for the Patriots in their 13-13 tie with the Colts, per Pro Football Focus:Top five PFF graded playersLB K.J.
