Cooper Kupps best football is in the rearview mirror, Rashid Shaheed is a talented but limited change-of-pace option, and the Jake Bobo/Tory Horton tandem isnt intimidating.To further fuel the optimism, Kenneth Walker is now a Chiefa move that could pave the way for the play-calling to trend closer to the league average in terms of pass rate.Lowest Pass Rates in One-Score Games (2025)The league average was 58.5% last season. If this offense trends in that general direction, any concerns over efficiency will be quieted, if not muted altogether.When focusing on the micro details, the case for JSN only gets stronger. In 2023, he posted a 17% target share and produced 3.9% below PPR expectations on those looks. Those arent bad numbers for a rookie, and he built on them in a meaningful way the following season with a 24.1% share and a 6.9% performance over PPR expectations.Growththats all we can ask for, and we got even more of it during his massive 2025 campaign (35.8% target share and 28.4% over PPR expectations). Very good receivers will see either their efficiency or their role increase, while a select few do both simultaneously.There are five Tier 1 players entering the 2026 fantasy season, and youre overthinking it if JSN isnt one of them. Shuffle up and deal those names however you like (Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, JaMarr Chase, and Puka Nacua), but if you land any of them, youre sitting pretty. Who is the alpha of this passing game? Can both produce at a high level, or is it a take turns sort of thing?It was the Pickens show in 2025, but that hasnt stopped managers from showing confidence that this offense can operate like the Bengals and make everyone happy. Its up to us to determine if Lamb will reestablish himself as the true WR1, or if this is a co-star situation where some down weeks are to be expected when the other party thrives.Should You Draft CeeDee Lamb In Fantasy Football?Lamb came out of the gates with a pair of 110-yard performances last season (a cumulative 16 catches on 24 targets for 222 yards), proving that he was still to be viewed as the guy in Big D: even with Pickens joining the mix. In those contests, the Cowboys totaled 60 points, and the incumbent WR1 had more catches than the newcomer had targets.That disparity didnt last.Lamb did get banged up in Week 3, which needs to be noted, but it was clear that as the Dak PrescottPickens connection gained reps, the role of primary target was no longer a given for Lamb.The upside remained, however. In the second half of the season, he ripped off three straight 110+ yard games, and that was with Pickens on a run of his own (18 catches for 290 yards and two touchdowns in the two games prior to Lambs spurt).And therein lies the problem.Of the 13 healthy games they played together, Lamb led Pickens in PPR points seven times. The week over week swings have the potential to be dramatic. When looking at the percentage of total points Lamb scored between the duo, here is the 2025 recap by game (starting with their first healthy game together):In total, his numbers were fine, and thats very likely to be the case moving forward. Lambs year-end numbers could very well land where you expect them to, but if he gets there the same way he did last season (through drastic peaks and valleys), youre going to be left wanting more.The red flags from 2025 were real. We could write off the career-low touchdown total as variance, but digging into his profile reveals a deeper issue.His 25% red-zone target rate was down from 29.2% over the two seasons prior. Extend the range on the field, and youll notice a similar trend (a 25.9% target rate in enemy territory, down from 30.1% in 2024). And the targets he has earned on the plus side of the field? Those have been dipping in value for a while now, and we have no real reason to think that changes in 2026.Lamb remains a high-end talent, but fantasy is as much a game of situation as anything else. In pre-season we have seen Manchester City defend high up the pitch but in a more zonal fashion - something they did last season under Pep Guardiola.City's starting shape here has looked like a 4-2-4, before players spring to press certain opponents when the moment is right.[BBC]Reflecting on how the game has changed in pre-season, Maresca said: "Usually the team that was defending found the solution by going man-to-man."Now the teams that try to build up are trying to find solutions against man-to-man. I don't know when but there is going to be a bit of change."And his change in defensive approach appears to be trying to ensure his side are ready for teams who are preparing to play against man-to-man presses more often.In pre-season, this has been the weakest part of City's system with players, often in midfield or at full-back, having to cover large distances, leaving gaps in their defensive shape.Like with any defensive approach that involves an element of pressing, this improves with time, as players better understand the press, as well as when physical condition improves.But this something Guardiola tweaked often last season, struggling to land on something he was completely happy with.There is benefit in Maresca's hire following Guardiola because it provides a sense of familiarity, particularly in terms of the team's identity and their principles.Maresca's system is its own, but interestingly there are references to City's last decade as the club look to begin a new chapter.Read the full article here

You do not easily replace a goalkeeper like Alisson Becker, who has spent the best part of a decade being the difference in tight games and is now reportedly of interest to Juventus.The conversation has moved from hypothetical to practical, and it has attracted advice from somebody who understands both the position and the specific weight of following a club legend.Advice From Someone Who Has Lived ItEmi Martnez arrived at Aston Villa as a goalkeeper nobody was particularly excited about and turned himself into a World Cup winner. He also spent years at Arsenal waiting for a chance that never truly came, which gives him a perspective on patience that most established number 1s do not have.His view on what Liverpool need has been set out in detail, and Martnez has offered his own read on the situation and on what should follow Alissons exit. It is worth reading precisely because it comes from outside the usual pundit pool.The short version of the goalkeeping trade is that the position is judged almost entirely on the moments it goes wrong, which makes personality as relevant as technique.The Part of the Job Nobody Scouts ProperlyRecruitment for goalkeepers has become extremely data-driven, and rightly so. Post-shot expected goals, sweeping distance, distribution accuracy under pressure, claim rates from crosses all of it is measurable and all of it matters.What does not show up cleanly is how a goalkeeper handles a mistake in front of 60,000 people who have just watched it happen (along with millions more on TV).Alissons real value at Liverpool was never only the saves. It was that the back four played differently because of who was behind them. Defenders push higher, full-backs commit further forward, and the entire shape of the press depends on trusting that the space behind will be covered. Lose that and the team plays 15 yards deeper without anyone consciously making that decision.That is what his successor will have to reproduce, and that process takes several months rather than a few matches.Why Buying the Obvious Name Is Not AutomaticThe temptation with any high-profile succession is to sign the most decorated available option and treat the problem as solved.Goalkeeping does not reliably work that way. The list of established internationals who have moved to a bigger club and never settled is long, and the reasons are usually environmental rather than technical a different defensive line, a different set of demands on distribution, a different level of scrutiny after a poor game.The alternative approach, promoting from within or backing a younger signing with a settled period in the side, carries obvious short-term risk. It also produces a goalkeeper whose relationship with the defence is built rather than assumed.Neither route is safe. Pretending otherwise is how clubs end up making the same signing twice.The Distribution Question Has Changed the JobIts worth remembering how much the role has shifted in the space of one goalkeepers career.A decade ago, a Liverpool netminder was judged primarily on shot-stopping and command of the area. Now the first phase of build-up runs through him, and a keeper who cannot play out under pressure limits the entire structure regardless of how well he saves.That narrows the pool of suitable candidates considerably. The number of goalkeepers who are genuinely elite at both jobs is small, expensive and mostly not for sale, which is why succession planning at this position tends to start two years before anyone outside the club notices.What the Fanbase Should Brace ForHere is the uncomfortable part. Whoever comes next will make a mistake in front of the Kop, possible at an early stage, and it will be replayed endlessly.That moment is the actual test. Every goalkeeper who has succeeded at a big club has had one. What determines the outcome is whether the crowd and the dressing room absorb or amplify it.Liverpool have historically been reasonably good at this, and there is a long tradition of the fans getting behind a player who is visibly struggling rather than turning on them.Judge It in May, Not SeptemberGoalkeeper transitions are among the most gradual things in football to assess properly. The clean sheets in autumn tell you very little.
