Greer, a senior, collected second-team all-conference honors last fall from the linebacker position and is positioned to be a leader of the defense, and offense, this fall. Greer boasts the physicality and work ethic required of a lead linebacker and he'll help spearhead the defense on a team looking to take some major leaps in 2026."A lot of those guys on offense are going to play defense," coach Josh Vanlue said. "We only lost one (linebacker) last year so everybody's back, which is awesome."Luke Horner, SilvertonHorner earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-state for Silverton en route to a Class 5A state championship a year ago. Now a senior, Horner will once again be a two-way impact guy with a plethora of responsibilties that coach Dan Lever looks forward to seeing him assume. "Luke Horner again will be a staple for us," Lever said. "I think we'll rely on the sure hands and speed of Luke Horner."Tevita Lata, North SalemNorth Salem finished 5-5 a year ago in Class 6A's Special District 1 and Lata was an impact Viking from the linebacker position. He's back with a bigger workload and two-way responsibilities within the new-look West Salem team."We feel great about that spot," coach Shawn Stanley said. "He ended up starting for us at the end of the year with injuries at middle linebacker and he became on all-league guy. He's an elite football player on both sides of the ball."Wyatt Smith, St. PaulSt. Paul went undefeated in Class 2A's Special District 2 and reached the state semifinals a year ago. Smith was a staple in the Buckaroos' defense, one of the best in the classification, and he earned second-team all state honors as an O-lineman and linebacker.Smith and the Buckaroos return multiple all-state players on both sides of the ball and to replicate, or exceed, the success of last fall Smith and the defense will need to step up once more. Jaden Traeger, KennedyTreager earned Class 3A second-team all-state honors from the linebacker position last fall. He helped Kennedy to a 5-1 finish in Special District 1, 7-3 overall record and a state quarterfinal appearance.The Trojans graduated some strong varsity talent on both sides of the ball, but the return of a pair of all-state athletes is exciting for a team with a new-look conference.Ryder VanDeweghe, SilvertonVanDeweghe, a junior, played a vital role in Silverton's march to a Class 5A state championship last fall. He earned second-team all-conference recognition within the Foxes' loaded defense and is one of many returning players on the hunt for back-to-back titles. If Silverton is going to reach the heights it did last year, Lever anticipates VanDeweghe being a decisive factor."I'm looking forward to who steps forward as vocal leaders in this program," Lever said. "I really expect Levi Schurter to do that, Ryder VanDeweghe to do that ... I'm expecting those guys to step forward but it's going to take more than that."Josiah Vela, CentralA year ago, Vela claimed honorable mention in Class 5A's Special District 3 from the linebacker position. He helped the Panthers to a 4-5 overall season and is back for his senior year.Vela and the Panthers jumped from 5A to 4A in the offseason, meaning they join a conference with Cascade, Philomath, Stayton and more. "I saw on the board projected with a win I would move to 47, which would be inside 50 and give me a good chance at staying there the following week."They're not alone, as the bubble is hot for players like Davis Thompson and Jackson Koivun, both vying Sunday to be inside the top 70.Thompson's 5-under 65 Saturday put him 13 under, alone in sixth and projected 73rd in the playoff standings. His longevity defies logic, as he continues to be the stuff of nightmares for opposing defenses and the ultimate floor spacer.A lack of team success has weighed Curry down in recent years, and that'll likely be the case once again this season. It's unfortunate for someone who deserves to be playing on the biggest of stages.No. 4: Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons2025-26 stats: 23.9 PTS; 9.9 AST; 5.5 REB; 1.4 STL; 3.7 TO; 46.1 FG%; 34.2 3P%; 64 GPCunningham has had the combination of size, scoring and passing that you'd want in a point guard since he entered the NBA in 2021. He's a better scorer, playmaker and rebounder, and he's at least more capable on the defense thanks to his elite positional size. But if the Lakers don't make any noise in the playoffs this season, he could certainly move down one spot.No. 1: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, OKC Thunder2025-26 stats: 31.1 PTS; 6.6 AST; 4.3 REB; 1.4 STL; 2.2 TO; 55.3 FG%; 38.6 3P%; 68 GPSpeaking of checking off the boxes, nobody on this list does that more than Gilgeous-Alexander. He's an unguardable scorer who has only gotten more efficient, particularly from deep. He's a skilled playmaker who knows how to leverage his gravity. He's a willing rebounder and defender despite having such a high usage rate. And he's a proven winner, having led OKC to three straight No. 1 seeds and a 2025 championship.Gilgeous-Alexander is the reigning two-time MVP for a reason. He continues to find ways to improve, and his team should continue to be in the title conversation for the foreseeable future.
