The Philadelphia 76ers are certainly going to be in the running to win a title in the 2026-27 season led by the talented core they have assembled. The Sixers will field one of the strongest starting lineups in the history of the game with Jaylen Brown and LeBron James joining Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe.Brown and James have both had success in their previous stops with Brown winning finals MVP in 2024 with the Boston Celtics while James, obviously, brings his decorated resume to Philadelphia. James has won four championships while winning finals MVP in all four of those championship runs. It will take time to get chemistry down and have everybody on the same page, but Philadelphia will be dangerous once that happens.With that being said, Brown has a request for his Sixers teammates if they do win a championship. Some people love training camp mayhem, others like former Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott did not, and were not sure what Joe Bradys stance is on practice fights because he didnt speak to reporters after Tuesdays physical session.On Day 5 of training camp at St. John Fisher University, the sun was finally out, the heat was up and with the Bills wearing their pads for the entire practice for the first time, not surprisingly all of those factor led to some spirited altercations during the two-hour workout.Thats football for you, thats what it is, said rookie linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr who delivered a late hit on tight end Dalton Kincaid which sparked a mini-brawl late in the session.Kincaid caught a pass from Josh Allen and ran a few steps before the whistle blew to end the play, but Elarms-Orr played through the echo as they say and leveled Kincaid and tempers erupted.I was just running to the ball, people said he already went down but I didnt see him go down, Elarms-Orr said. I was in my drop and I saw him spin and I thought he was still up and I just hit him.Well, it was not a smart play by the rookie in a training camp practice and Brady pulled him aside once everyone sort of went back to their neutral corners and gave him a stern talking to.The hit prompted a heated response from several offensive players and first on the scene was tight end Dawson Knox, followed by offensive lineman Alec Anderson who lives for this kind of stuff.I was in on that last one when Dalton got hit, the always feisty Anderson said. In fact, Davis has even caught a few punts.Before the new kickoff rules were implemented, the kickoff return job was greatly diminished because kickers routinely blasted the ball into the end zone for a touchback. Now with the ball in play so much more, you need good and reliable kickoff returners.But now punt return has lessened in value because punters have become so good at hang time and directional kicking, and returns have decreased. Now, the main skill for a punt returner is being able to catch the ball, and then making sound decisions once they do that.Ball security and decision making have a lot to do with the guy's success as a punt returner, Rodgers said. The skill set athletically is what kind of makes a guy ascend, but if you can't catch it or you make bad decisions, youre probably not going to be out there getting a whole lot of chances.Davison Igbinosun finding his wayThe 2026 second-round pick is battling 2025 first-round pick Maxwell Hairston for a starting cornerback job, but right now Hairston is getting all the reps with the starting unit.Igbinosun is trying to indoctrinate himself into the NFL while also learning a new defense and getting used to new teammates, a combination that always makes things difficult for rookies.I think I've been doing well, definitely room to improve, but its my first NFL training camp, I'm learning a lot, going with the punches, he said. Just trying to keep competing.Regarding his competition with Hairston, he said, I think the saying is iron sharpens iron and another is man sharpens man. Were trying to learn as much from each other because he's good at things and I'm also good at some things. So we're just trying to share, be the best version of ourselves.One of the reasons the Bills traded up into the second round to take Igbinosun was for his man coverage skills which are going to be more necessary in Jim Leonhards defense, and Igbinosun likes to think thats a strength of his that will pay off.Definitely, he said. I would say I'm a press man corner, I'm a man coverage corner. I think that's what I want to do. U.S. District Judge for the District of Colorado Charlotte Sweeney seemingly upended college sports with her filing on Friday. In short, she granted an injunction against the NCAA that allows high school athletes who graduated in 2022, whod previously exhausted their four years of eligibility, another year of eligibility based on the NCAAs adoption of the five-for-five eligibility rule earlier this summer. And its being met with a mix of bemusement, optimism and acrimony. "Definitely a cluster f---," one football assistant coach told me. "Like assembling a plane at 30,000 feet." While on fire. The five-for-five rule grants NCAA athletes an opportunity to play sports for five seasons in five years. The new rule starts the eligibility clock for high school athletes at age 19 or upon enrolling at university whichever comes first. The five-for-five rule sought to eliminate redshirting and seek an end to the growing number of eligibility cases the NCAA faces from student-athletes who feel theyve been unfairly restricted from play due to eligibility rules the NCAA has selectively enforced. Now, with preseason training camp beginning this week for most FBS teams, general managers have an opportunity to add depth and experience to their rosters. However, they cannot dip into the transfer portal to do it. Judge Sweeney clarified this in her order on Sunday. "The Courts order does not enjoin the operation of transfer rules," Sweeney wrote. "As the plain language of the preliminary injunction order and this order make clear, the Courts injunction concerns only the implementation of the Rule (as defined in the preliminary injunction order) and any Bylaw that prohibits Plaintiffs and Class Members from competing in a fifth season of collegiate athletics." This means that teams can add players to their roster who were on it last year and had not entered the transfer portal, but those teams cannot break the revenue-sharing cap or go over the 105-player roster cap to do it. Furthermore, players who were 20 years old or older at the start of their five-year clock remain ineligible. Still, the NCAA plans to fight Judge Sweeneys injunction and warned programs about adding players from the 2022 class back to their teams. "Schools and coaches must make their own independent decisions, but an injunction is intended to be short in duration, and the NCAA intends to appeal it on an expedited basis," the NCAA wrote in a letter to its membership. It added Sweeneys injunction "plainly lacks the authority to undermine the House injunction, which all of the plaintiffs in the Colorado case are bound by, including the roster limits and revenue share cap." However, that has not stopped both players and general managers from actively looking to engage with each other. For instance, reigning national champion Indiana could theoretically add linebacker Kellan Wyatt and defensive end Stephen Daley to its 2026 team if the Hoosiers have the roster and revenue cap space. If they did, theyd return 99 games of experience, including 65 starts. "Par for the course this season," an FBS general manager told me. "Its been a year making it up as we go along." The 2026 offseason has certainly felt that way. Following the crowning of a national champion, Congress has drafted two separate bills attempting to save college football from itself, while local judges and at least one federal one have provided injunctions and temporary restraining orders against the NCAA for players seeking a year of eligibility. The NCAAs remedy, five-for-five, hasn't survived two months without an unintended consequence, and the nature of college football players has never been more different. To wit: Players are suing to continue playing college football when, 20 years ago, Maurice Clarett was suing to get out of college football and all for one reason: money. No player was interested in playing a fourth let alone fifth year of college football until 2021, when it became clear that there was not just money but lots of money to be made playing the game, especially if players know the NFL believes theyre not good enough to play in its league. 2022 high school seniors under contract in the NFL are ineligible to play college football under Sweeneys order. Some might still want to, though. In some cases, a veteran college football player can make more and is worth more to his team in college than in the NFL. Former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck will make less as a rookie in the NFL than he did in his last season of college football on an NIL deal. Skilled labor is hard to come by in college because the nature of the sport is so transitive. Yet, there are more players to try to make college last longer because they know the NFL does not value them as much or, in some cases, at all. Former Texas offensive lineman Connor Hutson sued the NCAA for the chance to return to the Forty Acres only when he attended rookie mini camps with the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns and left without being offered a contract. However, he played 48 games with 23 starts for Steve Sarkisians Longhorns and could likely help this 2026 offensive line both on the field and at practice. He has value for them. "But should he?" isnt a question the sport is concerned with. When Indiana wins the national title, and Texas doesnt even qualify for the College Football Playoff, ethics in sport might well take a backseat to the cult of championships.
