When we discuss players who are likely to regress (and it can be positively or negatively; today, well focus on negative regression), we need to ask the follow up: Regress to what level? Its a conversation with nuance.Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL seasonAnd that brings me to todays discussion, the Regress and Win player. This article will hunt down a number of players who can produce less than they did last year, but still provide an ADP profit (or par) because the market is discounting them this summer, for whatever reason.Lets play the Regress and Win game.QuarterbacksDak Prescott (QB5 finish, QB9 ADP)Trevor Lawrence (QB4 finish, QB10 ADP)The quarterback board is especially deep this year, which is why all of my teams will employ some version of a Wait on QB draft strategy. Perhaps this means focusing on the QBs in the 6-10 range, where players like Prescott and Lawrence could easily challenge for supremacy against all the top-shelf QBs, with the likely exception of Josh Allen.Lawrence went ballistic in December last year and was one of the most common players on championship teams. Prescott looks an awful lot like Joe Burrow to me, linked to a pair of elite receivers and looking at several pinball games this year, trying to outscore what his shaky defense allows. Weve seen proof of concept with Prescott already, considering his five best fantasy seasons (QB2, QB3, QB6, QB6, QB7).Matthew Stafford (QB3 finish, QB13 ADP)Staffords case belongs a tier below Prescott and Lawrence, as hes an older QB and offers zero rushing value. The Rams defense is also expected to be much better than the Cowboys defense. But Stafford still has a winning infrastructure around him (Sean McVay, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams) and its silly to consider how affordable he is, presented as a backup QB in many formats.Bo Nix (QB7 finish, QB15 ADP)Its common to discredit Nix as a function of Sean Paytons creative scheming, but so long as Payton is still in Denver, lets turn into the skid; its a feature, not a bug. Nix is also coming off a busted ankle in last years playoffs, though summer reports are encouraging. The Broncos already had a solid WR room entering the offseason, and now they welcome a potential needle-mover in Jaylen Waddle. Nix was a polarizing player entering the 2024 NFL Draft, but he's proven a lot of people wrong over two years.Jared Goff (QB8 finish, QB17 ADP)Goff leads the NFL in passing yards and TD passes over the past four cumulative seasons, and while theres some survivor bias built into that stat, it still speaks to how comically underrated Goff tends to be. Not much has changed in Detroit Goff still enjoys a schedule loaded with indoor games, and hes working with an outstanding supporting cast. Goff wont offer anything as a runner, but given his established level of production, hes a screaming giveaway at the current market price.Running BacksDerrick Henry (RB7 finish, RB11 ADP)Its not a sizable discount for King Henry as he enters his age-32 season, but every little bit helps when we navigate the early rounds. Henry has scored double-digit touchdowns in a remarkable eight straight seasons, including 34 spikes since relocating to Baltimore two years ago. Henrys efficiency has also been shockingly better with the Ravens, and this offense should be on the improve given a healthy season from QB Lamar Jackson. I recognize the intention to avoid older running backs, but Henry doesnt show any sign of decline.DAndre Swift (RB15 finish, RB20 ADP)I understand the aggressive search for winners in the Chicago passing game, but leave a door open for Swift, whos been quietly consistent in his six NFL seasons. And if theres anything to the Kyle Monangai soft-tissue injury, perhaps Swift could see a modest uptick in usage this year. No matter what the touch count winds up being, we love targeting trusted players in strong offenses fantasy football often reduces to that simple concept. Swift should be a green light player on your draft board, and the price is reasonable.Jaylen Warren (RB16 finish, RB27 ADP)I wont be sad when the Aaron Rodgers experience finally ends after this season, but lets try to scrape a little more toothpaste out of the tube. Rodgers loves throwing to his running backs at this stage of his career in part because he doesnt want to hold the ball long, or get hit and Warren is an outstanding safety valve. New RB Rico Dowdle also has a Regress and Win case, but Ill side to Warren here, given he was a more efficient receiver last season and hes already spent a year working with Rodgers.Tony Pollard (RB24 finish, RB30 ADP)Boring veteran values are often my jam, and thats Pollards music in Tennessee. The Titans dont have major competition to his workload Tyjae Spears struggles to stay healthy, and rookie RB Nicholas Singleton was merely a fifth-round pick. Pollard survived a low-octane offense last year, but its probably a unit on the rise with Cam Ward entering his sophomore season and the WR room notably improved. Pollard is a nice target as your third or (possibly) fourth running back.Wide ReceiversCourtland Sutton (WR11 finish, WR39 ADP)Sutton has become a consistent touchdown scorer the last three years (25 spikes), using his route-running chops and boundary awareness to consistently win in tight spaces. The arrival of Waddle should move Sutton down the board, but this feels like an overcorrection. The option of landing Sutton as a possible WR4 on draft day is too good to pass up.Michael Wilson (WR13 finish, WR40 ADP)Wilson is a curious case, as his 2025 breakout came out of nowhere and his production sagged when Marvin Harrison Jr. returned. But if you hold out skepticism on Harrisons true ceiling, Wilson presents an interesting buying opportunity. QB Jacoby Brissett, the architect behind Wilsons shocking midseason surge, is now installed as the opening-day starter.Stefon Diggs (WR18 finish, WR44 ADP)Deebo Samuel Sr. (WR28 finish, WR53 ADP)WanDale Robinson (WR16 finish, WR64 ADP)Well batch this group of team-changing receivers together, although Samuel returns to a San Francisco organization that knows him well. Robinson can also play the familiarity card, as his PPR-busting days in New York were tied to Brian Daboll, the new Tennessee OC. Diggs was surprisingly consistent in his one New England season and heads to a Washington offense desperate for a consistent WR2. Even with age concerns, Diggs and Samuel are easy names to click on. I suspect Robinson will probably lead the Titans in receptions.Tight EndsKyle Pitts Sr. (TE2 finish, TE8 ADP)I understand why Pitts 2025 finish is being viewed skeptically, as most of it was crammed into the end of the season, and most fantasy managers know what its like to feel Pitts disappointment through the years. But Pitts has always been a pedigree player, the Atlanta downfield passing game has little after WR Drake London and its possible QB Tua Tagovailoa (the presumed starter) could be an upgrade over the Michael Penix Jr. and Kirk Cousins show we endured last year. Maybe Pitts just needed some favorable healthy and a break in timing to showcase his exciting ceiling.Jake Ferguson (TE8 finish, TE15 ADP)Two years ago Ferguson didnt score a touchdown, last year he had a juicy eight spikes. But the bagel from 2024 was partially explained by the Dak Prescott injury, so Im inclined to throw it out. Fergusons 17-game pace over the last three years (even with that brief touchdown drought) hashes out to a 76-657-5 pace. Thats where Id set his touchdown floor, and the other volume would easily pay off his ADP.Juwan Johnson (TE 10 finish, TE18 ADP)Johnsons 2025 breakout came with a signal the Saints extended him before the season, a sign of things to come. Johnson probably ran unlucky with touchdowns last year, and although the Saints have an exciting WR room, Johnson should be second or third in targets in a passing game that was surprisingly cromulent in 2025. Kellen Moore is a right answer at head coach, and Tyler Shough is a competent starter, too. Enjoy your generous Johnson discount at the tables.Hunter Henry (TE7 finish, TE22 ADP)Henry carried an injury-prone tag early in his career, but hes thrown that in the trash hes missed just four games in the last five seasons. The Patriots obviously added significant talent to their WR room, but Henrys experience and size makes him a fun pick at this inexpensive ADP. Even entering an age-32 season, I have no problem projecting Henry for a useful 60-720-6 type of season, which would easily beat his market cost.

The Arizona Wildcats are set to return two of their top players from last year's team. The program announced on Monday that they are "beginning to integrate" running back Ismail Mahdi and linebacker Max Harris onto the team as they prepare for the 2026 season.Both players were out of eligibility following the 2025 season, but have received a fifth year after a District Court judge in Colorado issued a preliminary injunction that grants athletes from the 2022 high school class an additional year of eligibility. The NCAA is expected to appeal the decision.Harris earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention recognition after playing in 12 of their 13 games last season, starting all 12. He finished the season with 78 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and seven quarterback hurries.The 2025 season was his first at Arizona after he spent his freshman season at Incarnate Word. He transferred to Louisiana Monroe for his sophomore season before spending his junior season at Texas State. He has made 227 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, and forced three fumbles in 45 career games.Mahdi was Arizona's top running back, leading the team in carries (133), yards (853), and yards per carry (6.4), to go with four touchdowns. He also caught 17 passes for 119 yards and another touchdown. He was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 189 yards against the Kansas State Wildcats.The 2026 season will be his second season with the Wildcats. He started his career at Houston Christian in 2022 before spending his sophomore and junior seasons at Texas State. The veteran has played in 46 games during his career, rushing for 3,778 yards and 20 touchdowns. While both players will have to quickly get up to speed with fall camp underway, they give Arizona two more proven veterans at key positions who are already familiar with the schemes. He hit 18 homers and posted an .865 OPS.He once again played well during the pandemic-shortened season, but his best seasons came in 2021 and 2022. The Whjite Sox declined the option, and he ended up with the Miami Marlins. He has not played in a regular-season game since May 25, 2025, and did not sign with any organization this year.Anderson delivered some iconic moments for the White Sox during his run of success. The standard is to play good football. No matter how many reps I get or what my role is, I have a job to do. My job is to do it very well and at a high level. Im thankful. I believe in my abilities, and Im going to go cut it loose, whatever that looks like for me.That is the line Lions fans should remember.Go cut it loose.Altmyer Is Learning FastThe biggest adjustment for any rookie quarterback is rarely one thing.It is everything.The speed. The volume. The protections. The terminology. The amount of information that has to be processed before the ball is even snapped.Altmyer has felt all of it.Ive improved in all areas. There are so many little details and nuances at this level that you dont necessarily get at the college level. There are things with formations, protections, the running game and defensive schemes that you have to master. There are little things every day that Im picking up on.He also understands he is not expected to have it all figured out yet.Im playing in the huddle more. Were playing with different groups and personnel packages. Im seeing different defenses. Im not mastering all of that right now.That kind of self-awareness is useful.So is the environment around him.Jared Goff Is Showing Him What the Job Looks LikeAltmyer has spent the summer watching Jared Goff up close, and what stands out most is not one throw or one flashy practice rep.It is the routine.Professionalism is the word. He does things at a high level consistently, day after day. He does the mundane things and the ordinary things at a very high level. He makes the ordinary look extraordinary.That might be one of the better descriptions of Goffs value inside the Lions organization.Quarterbacking at a high level is not just about Sunday afternoon. It is about what happens on Tuesday morning, Wednesday in the meeting room and Thursday during a walkthrough when nobody outside the building is paying attention.Altmyer is trying to copy that.I try to master that, too. At this position, especially during training camp, things can become pretty mundane and ordinary. He does the little things at a very high level over and over again. He doesnt let a rep go by, a moment go by or a conversation go by. I try to match him in a lot of ways. He has done it at a high level.For a rookie, that is a pretty good model to have sitting a few feet away.Teddy Bridgewater Left Another Lesson BehindBridgewaters influence appears to have been different.Altmyer watched Goffs precision and professionalism.From Bridgewater, he noticed calm.He was so easygoing. I observed him a lot, and the thing that stood out was his confidence. He wasnt afraid of anything. He trusted his abilities, and he was confident in his own skin.Altmyer returned to that theme again when describing what he wants to carry forward.He has been gifted at a very high level by the man above. You could just tell there was almost no tension with him. I try to carry that with myself. I try to be confident in my abilities because I saw a lot of that from him.That could matter quite a bit when Altmyer takes his first preseason snaps.The rookie will be excited. He knows that.The challenge will be making sure the emotion does not take over.His First NFL Game Is ComingAltmyer is not trying to hide how much this moment means.What an awesome opportunity. Its exactly what I could ever dream of. To be able to play NFL football, get a lot of opportunities on that field and lead my guys, what a cool deal that is.For him, this is not just another preseason game.It is the first chance to put months of work on tape against NFL competition.You grow up wanting this. Im grateful and blessed. Im not going to let this opportunity go by. Im going to take full advantage of it. Im going to prepare the right way and be ready for it. Im excited.That sounds like a player who knows every snap matters.And with Bridgewater no longer occupying a spot in the quarterback room, those snaps may carry even more weight.More Reps, More ConfidenceAltmyer has been clear about one thing throughout camp.He needs reps.Ive always been a reps guy. The more reps I get, the more comfortable and confident I feel out there. I got a lot of work with the twos and the third group. There was a lot put on me.He sees that workload as a benefit, not a burden.Those situations help me grow and develop. They stretch me into somebody who can operate at a higher level every time I step onto the field. It has been great. The more reps I get, the more comfortable and confident I feel. Im excited to keep going.That is exactly what preseason football is supposed to be for a player in his position.Detroit already knows what it has in Goff.Now the Lions need to learn what Altmyer can become.Detroit Is Coaching Him HardAltmyer is also getting no shortage of voices in his ear.Bruce coaches me on every play. It isnt just him. Coach Kafka, Tui and even Jared are always having conversations with me. Theyre always trying to help me get better.That quarterback room is loaded with experience, and Altmyer understands the advantage.Its crazy. Coach Brunell is a legend in Jacksonville and everywhere he has been. Tui has played at a high level, and Coach Kafka has done it at a high level, too. There are incredible offensive minds and a lot of great perspectives around me.Sometimes, the best thing a young quarterback can do is stop talking and listen.Altmyer knows that, too.Sometimes I just sit quietly in that room and listen. I observe and retain information that way. It has been fun. Im grateful for the position Im in, and Im going to take full advantage of it.He Knows Failure Is Part of ThisRookie quarterbacks are going to miss throws.They are going to misread coverages.They are going to hold the ball too long.Altmyer is not expecting a clean climb.A big part of this journey for rookies, and for me, is failing and seeing how you respond. Its about learning from mistakes.That is probably the right mindset for what is coming.He also knows the list of things he needs to improve is still long.There are tons of things. Timing, mechanics and seeing the field. There are multiple areas where I can continue to improve.The Lions are not looking for perfection right now.They are looking for growth.His Family Will Be WatchingThere is another layer to Altmyers first preseason appearance.His family will be there.My immediate family will be there, my parents and my two brothers. Theyre stoked. Theyre just as excited as I am.His grandparents are coming, too.My grandparents will be there, too. Im excited to play hard for them. Thats part of it for me. I love playing hard for my family and my teammates. Im stoked.For a kid from Mississippi, where there is no NFL franchise to grow up claiming as your own, this moment carries some extra weight.Im from Mississippi. We dont have a professional team there, so for me to be here is pretty cool.Pretty cool might be underselling it.Bottom LineLuke Altmyer suddenly has a bigger opportunity in front of him.Teddy Bridgewaters departure has created more room for the rookie to work, and Detroit is going to get a much clearer look at what Altmyer can handle.He is learning from Jared Goff. He is absorbing lessons from a quarterback room full of former players. He is getting coached hard, taking every rep seriously and embracing the mistakes that come with being young.Now he gets to play.And judging by the way Altmyer talks about this opportunity, he has no intention of easing into it.He is ready to cut it loose.
