SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOKC Thunder 3 goals: Thomas Sorber must stay healthy after redshirt yearThe calendar has flipped to August. Which means we're in the dog days of the NBA's year-round calendar. Little will happen over the next two months as teams across the league prepare for the 2026-27 season. Before we move on, though, let's reflect one last time on last year. The Oklahoma City Thunder had a league-best 64-18 regular-season record. Juggling injuries all year, they overcame notable absences all year. Alas, they fell short of a second NBA championship with a 2026 Western Conference Finals exit.To reflect on their 2025-26 season, Thunder Wire will conduct player grades for all 20 players who suited up for them this past year. Twelfth up is Thomas Sorber, who missed his first season with a torn ACL:Stay healthyThis is the big one for Sorber. It'll be about 18 months between games. That's a long time to be sidelined in basketball. He missed the last month of his collegiate season with foot surgery in Feb. 2025. He then had a season-ending torn ACL in Sept. 2025. And then he had a second knee surgery in July 2025. He missed a second straight Summer League. The first time he'll get to suit up for OKC will be in the 2026-27 preseason. I'm not a medical expert, but a bunch of lower extremity surgeries this early in your career as a big man can be scary.Let's see if Sorber can finally put this all behind him. The good news is torn ACLs are fairly easy to rebound from. The biggest consequence of the injury is the missed time involved with it. It'll be incredibly important for him to stay healthy in his first real year in the NBA. You have a four-year runway to show something after you get drafted.Earn backup minutesRight now, the Thunder center rotation is pretty set. You could make a sound argument that they have the deepest big-man room in the league right now. Good luck finding a better trio than Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein and Jaylin Williams. All three scale from being All-NBA talent to starter level. That said, there should be opportunities for OKC's other centers to get playing time. Thanks to the nature of the NBA's marathon-esque regular season. That's where Sorber could thrive. He'll battle Aday Mara for the center spot minutes. Both were recent top-15 picks in the last two draft cycles. I think I'd give Sorber the edge right now. He has a year in the NBA under his belt. He's also less of a project than his 7-foot-3 teammate. On top of all that, he could gain more playing time due to his positional versatility. Won't be a shocker if the 20-year-old morphs into a jumbo-sized power forward.Be a plus defenderIn his Georgetown tape, Sorber graded out as a good defender. He averaged two blocks in his sole season there. If he wants to be a legitimate part of OKC's rotation, he must show some rim-protection skills. Even though he's a bit undersized as a traditional center, I think the 6-foot-9 player has enough size to compensate for that. He won't be pushed around in the paint like your traditional young player. One of Sorber's perks was his physicality. He has an NBA-ready frame at 250 pounds. In fact, he might need to shed some weight if anything. But that's a great build to be at if you're going to hover in the paint. He shouldn't be bullied off the floor in post-ups. That's a start for his defensive makeup. The Thunder clearly value that side of the court over offense. They've had the league-best defense for two straight years now. This article originally appeared on OKC Thunder Wire: OKC Thunder 3 goals: Thomas Sorber must stay healthy after redshirt year0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 247 Views 0 önizleme -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Nebraska football coach named archenemy of old Big 12 rivalA former Nebraska football coach was recently named the archenemy of a Big 12 rival. ESPN named Tom Osborne as the archenemy of the Kansas State Wildcats.Osborne coached Nebraska from 1973 to 1997 and finished his coaching career with a 25-0 record against the Wildcats. He would finish with a 50-0 record against the Big 12's two Kansas schools, KSU and KU.The perfect record against Kansas State would make Osborne a logical choice for archemey. I would argue that Nebraska should have been listed overall; naming Osborne excludes the '99 matchup between the Wildcats and the Cornhuskers. No. 7 Nebraska (8-1) would host No. 5 Kansas State (9-0) with control of the Big 12 North on the line. The Huskers would fumble a school-record ten times (fumbles were an issue in '99) but still overwhelm the Wildcats and win 41-15. "But the Wildcats' success in the 1990s would have been even greater had they not constantly run into a Cornhusker roadblock manufactured by the legendary Osborne. From 1993 to 1999, K-State lost six games to Nebraska and eight to the rest of the nation. In 1997, it beat 11 opponents by an average score of 36-11 but fell 56-26 to the Huskers."Nebraska would move on to the Big 12 Championship Game, where they would get revenge on the Texas Longhorns for an early-season loss and win the conference title 22-6. That would be the last time that Nebraska won a conference championship. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCHSN broadcast navigates White Sox Pope NightCredit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesThe Chicago White Sox have been one of the best stories in baseball this year. Just two years after going 41-121 and breaking the MLBs single-season loss record, Chicago has been in first place in the AL Central since early July.Pitcher Mike Vasil is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery, but hes helped his squad defy expectations from the dugout with his magic-wand skills. Vasils magic may just be the result of divine intervention, as Pope Leo XIV, who ascended to the papacy onMay 8, 2025, is a Chicago-area native and diehard White Sox fan.We got a pope, and we got a wizard. We have a lot of good luck on our side, star shortstop Colson Montgomery said on Sunday. Anything to get the fans excited for all that stuff is fun.The Sox delivered that excitement for fans on Tuesday, honoring His Holiness with a Pope Hat Night giveaway for the Sox game against the Cincinnati Reds. Initially intended for just the first 2,500 fans, all 38,113 attendees of the Rate Field sellout crowd were gifted a complimentary Sox-themed pope hat.Chicago went all out for the nights festivities, and the CHSN broadcast did its best to keep up, starting with Sister Mary Jo Sobieck of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield doing her thing, as play-by-play voice John Schriffen noted, and throwing out the first pitch.Sister Mary Jo showing off some moves before the first pitch#WhiteSoxpic.twitter.com/hF3TKZlsC7 White Sox Video (@WhiteSoxVideo) August 11, 2026The players got in on the fun as well, with recently acquired outfielder Brenton Doyle, catcher Edgar Quero, and third baseman Miguel Vargars each sporting one of the ceremonial hats in the dugout after launching a home run.#WhiteSoxhttps://t.co/4HYop3EB4Lpic.twitter.com/ipF63BKsuj White Sox Video (@WhiteSoxVideo) August 11, 2026https://t.co/oGfWupK2wFpic.twitter.com/Isf9KZDUSl White Sox Video (@WhiteSoxVideo) August 12, 2026!!!433-0#WhiteSoxpic.twitter.com/mJeUi6sGuq White Sox Video (@WhiteSoxVideo) August 12, 2026Chicagos mascot, Southpaw, joined the festivities, leaving Schriffen and color commentator Steve Stone stunned by his full papal costume.#WhiteSoxpic.twitter.com/X84pR4TKe8 White Sox Video (@WhiteSoxVideo) August 12, 2026White Sox executive vice president Brooks Boyer isnt sure if the Pope Hat Night will be an annual tradition, but is appreciative that the franchise was able to connect Leo XIV to his childhood team.Well see, Boyer said, per the Chicago Sun-Times. We wanna be super respectful to the pope, to the Vatican. Hopefully this represents a tie to his childhood team, doing it the exact right way.If Vasils magic, divine or not, helps carry the surging Sox deep into October, papal hats and magic wands might just find their way onto national broadcasts. The post CHSN broadcast navigates White Sox Pope Night appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 248 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow the Los Angeles Lakers' $12.5B sale compares to the price tags of other North American sports franchisesA little over a year after breaking the record for a North American sports franchise sale price, the Los Angeles Lakers have set the bar again.A group led by Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger has reportedly agreed to a deal to purchase the NBA team for a record $12.5 billion. In June 2025, Mark Walter bought a controlling interest in the franchise for $10 billion from the Buss family. He will make $2.5 billion in 14 months once the sale goes through.Kushner and Iger were reportedly involved in the process to bring an expansion franchise to Las Vegas, but chose to change course and negotiate for the Lakers. The Lakers sale follows not just Walter's purchase in June 2025, but also the $6.1 billion sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by Bill Chisholm, which was the record at the time. They are currently the top three sale prices for NBA franchises all-time and three of the top four among North American sports teams.Following the sales of the Lakers and Celtics, Mat Ishbia's $4 billion purchase of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury in 2023 is the next highest among NBA franchises. The Dallas Mavericks ($3.5 billion, Adelson and Dumont families) and the Brooklyn Nets ($3.3 billion, Joseph Tsai) are also among the top NBA sale prices ever. The third-highest sale price ever comes from an NFL team. In July, the Seattle Seahawks were purchased for $9.612 billion from the estate of Paul Allen by an ownership group led by the family of San Francisco 49ers limited partner Vinod Khosla. That total is over $3.5 billion higher than what Josh Harris' group spent when they purchased the Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion in 2023.LANDOVER, MARYLAND - SEPTEMBER 21: Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris looks on before the game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Dallas Mavericks (NBA): $3.5 billion (2023) / Brooklyn Nets (NBA): $3.5 billion (2023)Other NFL team sale records Harris' group was the most expensive team purchase at the time when they bought the team from Dan Snyder. The Commanders sale broke the previous NFL record price when the Walton-Penner group shelled out $4.65 billion in 2022 for the Denver Broncos. The team was put up for sale in February 2022 after lengthy legal battles with previous owner Pat Bowlen's family following his 2019 death. Bowlen first bought the franchise in 1984 for about $70 million.Prior to the Broncos' sale, the Carolina Panthers went for $2.275 billion to David Tepper. Previous owner Jerry Richardson put the team up for sale after a Sports Illustrated report detailed numerous allegations of sexually predatory behavior toward female employees and at least one financial settlement to a black scout that he called a racial slur. Richardson bought the Panthers into the league as an expansion team for $206 million in 1993.PORT ST. LUCIE, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 17: New York Mets owner Steve Cohen looks on during spring training workouts at Clover Park. (Photo by Rich Storry/Getty Images)Rich Storry via Getty ImagesMLB team sale recordsThe baseball world saw its franchise sale record recently broken when private-equity billionaire Jos E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones, paid $3.9 billion for the San Diego Padres. That number surpassed the previous American sports record of $2.4 billion paid by lifelong New York Mets fan and hedge fund manager Steve Cohen in 2020.There are now seven MLB teams that have sold for $1 billion following the approval of the Padres' deal. The Los Angeles Dodgers were the first in 2012 after being purchased for $2 billion by Walter and Guggenheim Baseball Management. At the time, it was the richest sale ever in professional sports.Six years after the Dodgers sale, the Miami Marlins were bought by Bruce Sherman for $1.3 billion. John Sherman, no relation, spent $1 billion to acquire the Kansas City Royals two years later. The Baltimore Orioles went for $1.725 billion in 2024 to Baltimore native David Rubenstein. The Tampa Bay Rays sold for $1.7 billion in 2025 to a group led by Florida home developer Patrick Zalupski.NHL team sale recordsThe NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning were a success under Jeff Vinik's ownership, making the Stanley Cup Final four times and winning two titles. The franchise's revitalization led to a league-record sale price of $1.8 billion in October 2024 to a group of investors led by Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz of Blue Owl Capital.Fenway Sports Group unloaded the Pittsburgh Penguins from its portfolio of franchises in June after finalizing a deal worth approximately $1.75 billion with the Hoffmann Family of Companies. The Utah Mammoth once held the NHL record when owner Ryan Smith purchased the team formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes in April 2024 for $1.2 billion. Smith, who also owns the NBA's Utah Jazz, moved the team to the "Beehive State" to begin play with the 2024-25 NHL season. Those three teams are the only NHL sales north of $1 billion. Just below that line are the Ottawa Senators, who were purchased by Michael Andlauer for $950 million in 2023.Expansion in the NHL has become a costly process over the years. The Nashville Predators, Atlanta Thrashers (now Winnipeg Jets), Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild each paid $80 million to enter the league between 1998 and 2000. Sixteen years later, Bill Foley shelled out $500 million to bring hockey to Las Vegas, and in 2018, the late David Bonderman and movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer paid $650 million for the Seattle Kraken to enter the league.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 119 Views 0 önizleme

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJim Mora takes on another rebuild as Colorado State joins the revamped Pac-12 ConferenceFORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) Jim Mora spent the summer hiking and mountain biking to the top of whatever summit was in front of him. He finds peace tackling those uphill climbs. This fall, another steep challenge awaits. Only this one takes place on the football field. The longtime coach known for rebuilding programs tries to lead Colorado State back to the top in his first season in charge and as the Rams join the reimagined Pac-12 Conference. If we work hard, if we stay healthy, if we maintain the standard, we can be successful, Mora recently said from his office inside Canvas Stadium with a view overlooking the field. We will be successful.Mora is no stranger to reclamation projects. He took over a 1-11 UConn team after the 2021 season and led the Huskies to a bowl game in three of his four seasons. But his heart was lured out West. He spent a chunk of his childhood down the road in Boulder when his dad, 91-year-old coaching great Jim Mora, was an assistant for the Buffaloes. The 64-year-old Mora knows the history of this conference well. His father was a longtime assistant when it was the Pac-8. He played in it as a defensive back for Washington when the league was the Pac-10. He coached in it at UCLA as part of the Pac-12.Now, he's a member of this reassembled version that followed a high stakes game of conference realignment. The Conference of Champions features the likes of Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Texas State and Utah State, along with holdovers Washington State and Oregon State. It gives you a chance to play for a conference championship," Mora said. A chance to potentially get into the college football playoff. ... This was really exciting to me.The wisdom of dadIt was his dad's advice that's stayed with him through every stop at every level.Firmly set the groundwork early, his father instructed. It worked out well for his dad, who was a head coach in the USFL (Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars) and later in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, where his Playoffs?! rant remains iconic even 25 years later.Because you cant go in easy and then come down with higher standards, said Mora, who kicks off his Rams tenure on Sept. 5 against Wyoming. You have to walk in the building with the highest of standards and hold people accountable.Another piece of advice from dad: Praise everyone. Because a word of encouragement goes a long way.The players dont care how much you know until they know how much you care, said Hugh Millen, a longtime friend who was roommates with Mora at Washington before embarking on an NFL career and later seeing his son play for Mora at UConn. Players sense theres something genuine about how he cares. You can feel that."That's simply from lessons he learned along the way from the late Don James at Washington to, of course, his father. Mora chats with his dad all the time.I know that everything he tells me is genuine," Mora said, "and from the heart. The history of the RamsMora's new office is already well decorated. There are numerous pictures him as a player, as a coach, with former players, with his father adorning the walls. On the coffee table, a thick book titled Aggies to Rams: The history of Colorado State football. Certainly, he will be a chapter in an updated version.Mora takes over the program from Jay Norvell, who was fired last October after a 2-5 start. It was a feat just to get Mora from UConn, where he guided the Huskies to back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2024 and '25.The Rams haven't won that many games since 2014, when they had 10 under Jim McElwain while in the Mountain West. They haven't won a conference title since 2002 with Sonny Lubick the coaching great the field is named after running the show.We went to look for a program builder and we found that in Coach Mora, athletic director John Weber said. His level of detail, his level of preciseness, teaches everyone in the department what it really takes to compete at a championship caliber. The school has revamped the program and features an on-campus stadium that opened in 2017. The Rams also just signed a new partnership deal with Adidas. This," Weber said, "is what a power school looks like.Mora is a sum of all his partsMora used to constantly vacuum when he was roommates with Millen while a graduate assistant at Washington. It's the way the detail-oriented Mora is wired. It's why taking a timeout from coaching for a few seasons after being dismissed from UCLA in 2017 was a challenge. He missed the grind. So he climbed. He would run up the mountain at such a pace to bring on the physical pain so that it could finally mask and drown out the internal pain that he wasnt coaching, Millen recounted. He needed to coach as much as he needed to draw his next breath.Which led him to UConn, where he revitalized a program known more for basketball. He accomplished a similar turnaround with the Bruins (going 46-30 from 2012-17) and hopes to rejuvenate the Rams.Im getting up every day with the mindset to do the very best I can, said Mora, who also has been an NFL head coach with Seattle and Atlanta. If you do that, youre always at least moving toward success. His influence already is contagious. The players frequently practiced on their own this summer to build cohesion. We try to be a player-led team," said receiver Jackson Harper, who followed Mora from UConn. "Because player-led teams are successful.Going uphill is his way to unwindBefore camp, Mora hiked and mountain biked in Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado. In all, he logged 75,000 vertical feet.Anything he reflected on during those ascents?I think about everything, Mora said. "But I just really try to observe nature and how lucky I am."___AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-football0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 112 Views 0 önizleme -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat's happening with Lewis-Skelly's Arsenal future?Lewis-Skelly has made 75 appearances for Arsenal [Getty Images]Myles Lewis-Skelly is already a hot topic and the season isn't officially under way. The 19-year-old's long-term future at Arsenal has been debated since he slipped down the pecking order last season - behind Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie - as Arsenal's third choice left-back.In his breakthrough season in 2024-25, he quickly developed into one of the best young full-backs in the Premier League, which led to him earning a place in the England squad and becoming the youngest man to score on his Three Lions debut. The following summer, the academy graduate was rewarded with a new five-year contract. But last season was more difficult.Arsenal had considered listening to offers for Lewis-Skelly, with club sources indicating in April they would look to recoup a minimum combined 100m for Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri. But his excellent end-of-season resurgence, in his natural position of centre midfield, may have sparked a rethink over his status during this transfer window. Lewis-Skelly has been one of the standout performers during pre-season and has started the past two friendlies as the Gunners prepare for the Community Shield against Manchester City on Sunday. With a number of midfielders returning late from the World Cup, and new signing Bruno Guimaraes still getting used to his new surroundings, Lewis-Skelly could still make another go at becoming a first team regular for the Gunners. Manchester United and Chelsea interestOn Tuesday, news headlines suggested Lewis-Skelly could be on the move with two Premier League clubs reportedly interested. One source told BBC Sport that Lewis-Skelly was offered to Manchester United in January, but Arsenal say they have not actively offered him to anyone. Manchester United do need a left-back though, with their most recent signing in the position, Patrick Dorgu, playing in an advanced role throughout this pre-season. Dorgu was mostly injured after Michael Carrick took charge but all of his Premier League appearances under the United boss were on the wing or in a wide attacking role. Luke Shaw started every Premier League game last season but his overall fitness record is patchy. United have been linked with a move for Newcastle's Lewis Hall, but accept it would be difficult to sign him, particularly after the departures of Sandro Tonali and Guimaraes from the club. If they did sign Lewis-Skelly there is also the option that he could fill the third midfielder position there is still debate over, but the feeling is that United want another natural full-back to challenge for a starting role. Like United, Chelsea also say they have been offered the chance to sign Lewis-Skelly but Arsenal maintain they have not offered the player to any other team.Chelsea have two left-backs already in Jorrel Hato and new signing Pep Chavarria and are not in Europe, so will not have as many fixtures to navigate this season. With that in mind they are not expected to sign a third left-back to supplement their squad. Chelsea also have six central midfielders, although it is possible Enzo Fernandez could be sold and Dario Essugo leaves on loan.It makes it unlikely Chelsea would be in the market to sign Lewis-Skelly without substantial sales.Lewis-Skelly's position Lewis-Skelly has made it clear that he wants to stay at Arsenal and is focused on working to try to establish himself as a first team regular at the club. There is no denying his position in the Arsenal first team is under threat after the arrival of midfielder Guimaraes for 75m from Newcastle United, but there is also the prospect that with so many matches, Lewis-Skelly could still get the game time he desires. But Arsenal are looking to sell members of their squad before the transfer window closes. Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli would be available if a suitable offer was made, while Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson are not part of Mikel Arteta's plans. Arsenal invested heavily in the market last summer, bringing in eight players for 250m, and they have spent over 100m in this window already while stil looking to add more players before the deadline. They have sold Christian Norgaard to Everton for 7m and Leandro Trossard to Besiktas for about 15m, but the Gunners are aware they have to be flexible in the market as the deadline gets closer. As an academy graduate, if Lewis-Skelly is sold he would present 'pure profit' in the club's accounts. That fact is something Lewis-Skelly is aware of, writing the caption "pure profit" on a picture of himself with the Premier League trophy when Arsenal celebrated the title at Selhurst Park on the final day of last season. The impact of the potential sale has changed, however, with the introduction of the new Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules, as any sale of a player will now be spread evenly over the length of their contract - meaning clubs won't be able to show such an immediate boost on their books after selling an academy graduate. At the moment it does not look like a move for Lewis-Skelly is imminent, but that does not mean his future at Arsenal is certain just yet.
